That's just it; google maps times are driving time only and don't take gas stops into account. Most vehicles are going to take at least one, probably two gas stops between here and there. Throw in one or two stops for food and that's easily an extra hour and a half. So that takes it from 8 hours 40 minutes to just past 10 on its' own. Throw in traffic time(you will almost certainly hit rush hour somewhere) and that's an extra hour too, putting you around 11. Between my wife and I, we've made the drive 5 or 6 times in the last two years, and neither one of us is breaking the posted speed limit, including the myriad construction zones which drop you back below 60(most horrid in WVA around the tunnels).
TL;DR: Google maps time is strictly start and stop time; it doesn't account for real world stuff or safe driving practices, where I did, so YMMV. :)
I tend to make up for the stop times with going faster than the speed limit. Assuming highway driving 5 MPH over will easily cover the breaks.
Anime.... you totally make up for Peeing and Eating by BEATING the Google estimate.
Hey, I made it to Columbus in 15h only stopping for gas and using the fill up time for bathroom breaks.
Don't change it just on my account, there is always the real penguin con of 2012 that i can attend on S&T day.
I hear what you're saying AnimeJ. But from 7 hours to 12... well that's a heck of a lot of pee breaks! ;)
4 kids + wife tends to do that to ya, and my estimate was from Dayton to DC, which is close to 9 by Google Maps and around 8 from my GPS. Still an extra 4 hours, but man do kids take a while.

Yup, that changes everything.

Two daughters here. On our long drives I leave at 3 AM or so if possible. They (and wife) go right back to sleep, I get a good four to five hours driving in before anyone awakes. Puts our first potty stop right about breakfast too. Has worked wonderfully on our last few trips up to upper NY.
I almost always beat the Google estimate. I'm speedy, though.
If anyone is curious...I made the drive from detroit to the potential pen con location in 3 hours.
Man, I would love to come for the mini-con, but I'm just starting my new job this week, and I won't know what my schedule will be until con time comes closer. I will be keeping track of the thread, that's for sure. If I don't make it, just make sure that doak gets to play Twilight Imperium, the poor guy deserves it after the hell we put him through last year.
5/5 would mean that I get to go to a skeptics convention in NYC on 4/28, and maybe meet Neil DeGrasse Tyson (/swoon)
Thinking of 5/5 reminded me of the dropship pilot in Aliens saying "I'm in the pipe, five by five" which then reminded me of the one thing we missed out on at PenguinCon... Artemis!
Now here is where living in Cleveland could rock for once. The lead Dev / creator lives here and I heard that he built touch panel workstations to demo it on AND is adding in multiplayer scenarios like the Kobayashi Maru and the Battle of Wolf 359 (Star Trek fans might be drooling at this point).
Anyone else interested in this? On our personal rigs if I can't arrange a demo? Or would it suck up too much space?
Either works for me.
5/5 sounds good to me.
For me 5/5 is right out, being the weekend of my wedding anniversary.
I will have just turned 30 4 days beforehand, so I reserve the right to drink excessively for 5/5. That said, 4/28 is a couple days before my birthday, so I reserve the right to drink excessively.
Ok, so I would have done so if it was tomorrow. But still.

I will be 30 for 2 and half monthsish either way...do I still get to drink excessively?
PS 5/5 is better for me.
4/28 I will be in Vegas!

Oh, that's right, your birthday is coming up.
You get to drink excessively because you're Cheeto. I am just making excuses.

Eh? Faith Lehane is who I always think of, from Buffy.
Even an episode of Angel named "Five By Five" where she guest stars.
And of course the actual phrase, used for radio transmission. Sadly there's no "uses in pop culture" section.
I think either day might work for me, but I have a couple things up in the air that might ultimately land around that time.
I could do either 4-21 or 5-5... preferring 5-5 due to Vegas being the where it is.
Also, if we are doing a hotel space, I would get a room regardless if it was 1 day or 2 day event, so I am okay with 2 day. I would probably not stay all day on the 2nd day.
Any of those are fine for me.
My vote is also still for 5/5.
Any date works for me; other than PAX East weekend.
4-28 and 5-5 are good for me. I would prefer a 2-day event, as it is quite a long drive for just one day.
4/21's best for me. Followed by 4/28.
Descending order: 5/5, 4/28, 4/21
