2K Games Announces XCOM

I guess that frees up March for pile play.

Am I alone in thinking that this game will end up being canceled?

Yup.

Still Mass Effect 3 and MY GAME out in March.

I have to say I'm a bit worried though.

I wonder when Bioshock Infinite is out, that's supposed to be 2012 so I'm guessing they will be kept clear of each other.

No official release date has been announced, but I'll be shocked if Bioshock Infinite isn't one of the big tent pole games released in November.

It won't get cancelled. At worst it gets pushed out the door in April and left to die.

Fixed.

At risk of going around on a topic already covered, not enough people for 2K's liking want an x-com sequel that's like the original, but that's the license they've got. And, they want some "tactical third person cover shooter with persistent RPG elements" marketshare, but don't want to put their necks on the line investing in a new risky IP.

Now this looks interesting.

In case you're a sane and rational human being and have ducked out of the other XCOM thread after getting No Mutants Allowed flashbacks, there was some news about this XCOM: it's been delayed until Q1 of 2013, so Jan. 1st to March 31st of next year. Flow my tears the spider said.

/sad panda. I think this looks interesting and fun.

And honestly, this game has a lot less to prove than Enemy Unknown.

Yeah, but it doesn't strike me as a good sign if they are delaying it until after the holiday season. It sort of says that there is a lot that they still need to do and that 2K doesn't have faith that it will be a quality AAA title.

Sweet trailer.

Didn't realize BioShock 2 guys were on it.

Interest raised.

Oh, what? Third person? I'm just about done with trickin' third person cover-based shooters...

The walls, won't somebody think about the walls...

That trailer makes me think that one solution to too much shooting in shooters might be paperwork.

That really is an outstanding trailer. Too bad there's no game play yet.

Huh, I thought that they had cancelled the XCOM FPS. In light of Enemy Unknown, it seems silly to release this now as the two universes don't match up.

I'm sure they'll make them match. The Outsider from the main game seems like the link here.

I was always excited about this, and I still am. I think putting XCOM in the subtitle was a good move, it emphasises that this is a spin-off from the main game, which I think will be much more appreciated for people who cling to the past like a security blanket were upset with the direction the game was taking

I'm still on board. Looks awesome.

edit: looks like it's confirmed to be an XCOM origin story:

http://www.joystiq.com/2013/04/26/xc...

In XCOM Declassified, players are in the role of Special Agent William Carter, who takes customizable agents into the field for real-time combat (as compared to Enemy Unknown's turn-based). Permadeath for squad mates is still part of the game. Although the squad mates are blank slates the player creates, The Bureau also features a cast of support characters, who are established as part of the plot. 2K Games is still trying to keep the focus of XCOM on "tactics, tools and teams."

"A high tide raises all boats," said Nico Bihary, senior producer at developer 2K Marin, when asked how last year's XCOM: Enemy Unknown influenced The Bureau. "There's quite a bit of familiarity between what we're doing versus what [Firaxis] is doing. What worked to our advantage, it really allowed us to put together a really compelling origin story because [Enemy Unknown] already established the current version of XCOM. It's been contextualized for us, so if we tell an origin story, people understand what we're talking about."

Also, I just saw on Facebook that Garry Schyman, who has scored all the Bioshock games, and who rules, wrapped up his score for this game in March. So that is cool.

Hey, that is my birthday! Now I know for what I should ask:)

You know, I'd play the XCOM strategy game set in the 50s. Can someone skin that real quick?

\o/

Too bad I don't have a system to play it on.

Agreed entirely.

I'm keen.

The website[/url]]As special agent William Carter, players call the shots, pull the trigger and lead their squad in a gripping third-person tactical shooter set within a high-stakes, covert war to protect humanity.

I'm guessing that they did! Or, at least, retooled it.

I don't agree. If we're talking parallel worlds and thus different origin stories or even the same world and the justification for the existence of XCOM in the first place in the Firaxis game. I mean, the agency already exists when we start - it's just not funded all that well, which could be "accounted for" by there being no threat for several decades...

Screenshot for you:

Also... ARGH! cover-based shooters! They need to die, die, die! I'm blaming YOU Uncharted!!

LOVE the art direction and setting though! I'm so conflicted!!

Cover-based doesn't bug me, especially for a squad-based tactical game. It sounds more to me like a GRAW approach than a Gears/Uncharted thing, and I still have warm and fuzzy feelings about the 360 versions of the GRAW games.

Also, cover is so central to the mechanics of XCOM: EU that it would be weird to not have some kind of cover system in the XCOM action game!

I tried to update the OP and title with the new info but it wouldn't let me
