Dark Souls Catch-All

That's what I always thought.

What sort of "research" is being done with the Pendant? I figure it's like the witch's ring, an item you have to equip or use at the right time with the right person, so I could see why no one has bothered doing that yet.

Doesn't the Witch's ring let you talk to the Fire Keeper at the beginning?

And also the leader of the Chaos Servant covenant.

Seriously? I would've done that had I known.

Spoiler:

Now that she's dead, I'm curious to know what she would've said before and after I freed the Gold Knight who's name keeps escaping me. What does she say?

She probably says, "hey dave don't let that gold dude kill me" btw I killed him before he had the chance.

Is it Oscar, the dude that gives you the Estus flask?

Internet suggests yes it is and re-watching the cutscene and checking out the character model they do look the same. That would certainly lend a lot of credence to your point. Yet still when I watch the openingscene it reads "dispassionate" to me rather than "rescuing"

But you find him locked in a cage like five minutes later, about to die. That seems...odd, since here's clearly a man who can take care of himself.

And I get the same read as you, Dan: dispassionate.

If you check his initial dialogue (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ULNr_...) it really doesn't seem like he was previously aware he was either helping nor specifically helping you (if it is supposed to be the same guy). Or perhaps the only thing he was doing was generally helping all undead escape the asylum. And it could just be that Oscar and initial knight are just two different Knights of Astora.

Spoiler:

Given the plot it almost sounds like he was the previous/potential chosen undead and in becoming hollow he has realised he isn't the chosen undead and passes the estus flask to you. And nothing about that dialogue suggests any sense of recognition nor deliberately helping you moments ago. In my mind if just raises more questions than it possibly answers, although that seems to be a general theme in the game's story.

Personally, I don't think it's Oscar.

I think it is another knight; I also think he is trying to save you.

The only reason I feel that it is Oscar that liberated you is the dialog "Oh... it's you..." Oscar acts as if he has seen you before.

Ok, so I stared at this game after staring at it unopened for a while after receiving it for Christmas. I didn't make it 30 minutes into demon souls.

However, this game ramps up at the right pace to make you feel like you're actually getting better. I rang the first bell by the time I was done for the day on Friday. I'll be picking it back up in a day or so, but I'm pleasantly surprised.

I love to see posts like this. I asked in a different thread how many people actually gave Dark Souls a fair shot and still didn't like it. I know it happened a lot with Demon's Souls and that's a shame for Dark Souls because it's just so much better (ignoring multiplayer).

I tried it one weekend with a redbox rental, really really enjoyed it after being very lukewarm on Demons Souls. Ended up getting other things for the holidays but it is first on my list of stuff to pick up.

On that note, I tried Dark Souls out through a RedBox rental. I generally don't play any fantasy RPGs or dungeon crawlers. But something about the way a number of podcasters talked about the game (Certis, Jeff Cannata, etc.) made me want to take a flyer on it. After that first night, I ordered it.

There's something about it that just keeps me enthralled.

Ah, great point. That's probably right.

Got my main up to sl120 today. Basically, I've just been co-oping on Anor Londo, and PVPing in the forest. At one point I had 1.5 million souls, and so I bought a ton of Twinkling Titanite.

I took down [bossnames]

Spoiler:

Ornstein and Smaugh

on my first try, and was curiously let down by their lackluster efforts. I thought these guys were supposed to be the toughest / most annoying bosses to beat? Didn't even need an Estus flask... maybe I just got lucky?

Or maybe you're amazing!?! First try by yourself? That sounds like luck, drastic overleveling, or incredible skill. I thought that was the most difficult boss fight in the game by a fair margin.

I'm in the same boat as Dyni. That fight took me forever to master. I resorted to watching a strategy video, and summoning the NPC for extra help.

Well I had Sol along for the fight, because sometimes he hands out medals if he doesn't get stomped. He did a good job of distracting Ornstein for a while. But Smaugh's so slow! And when powered up, Ornstein seemed to miss every time with the lightning spear... totally sh*t aim.

I was lvl 55.

Distracting Orstein is pretty huge. The part the fight that's so difficult alone is trying to find gaps to damage one without getting destroyed by the other. I didn't summon an NPC or human, so the fight took me several tries. Lots and lots of running around looking for attack openings.

Yeah, I solo'd them my first attempt, thanks to how powerful leveled-up pyromancy can be on NG. NG+ I needed Solaire for a distraction, but still got it first try. They were overrated compared to a few other bosses, IMO.

Spoiler:

Yeah I think i was around that level and I took them out on my 3rd (maybe 4th) attempt and I solo'd it. Didn't think it was all that hard. Stay around the edges away from them, smack Ornstein whenever he comes within range and then back up. The crystal halberd makes incredibly short work of Ornstein and if I'd had it equipped in my first attempts I'd be surprised if I didn't wouldn't have also done it on my first or 2nd attempt.

From that point on I didn't think any of the bosses were too tricky until the very end.

Level 55 is significantly higher than I remember tackling that encounter at.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned the Dark Souls for PC petition here, considering how many people have explicitly said "I would love this game to be on PC". It's gotten enough signatures to get the attention of Namco/Bandai, so there's a non-zero chance this could actually happen. If you haven't signed it, might as well do so now.

Huh, and I've been following the thread diligently for weeks. Well, worth re-posting anyway, since it's over 80k signatures now.

Eh, Demon's Souls was one of the reasons that made a PS3 worth buying for me, along with blu-rays, Uncharted, and Disgaea.

So, finally got some time to get back to this. I rang the first bell last night! It was very cool coming up to that area and hearing someone else ring it quite loudly. It took me two tries...and I have to say, it was a lot easier the second time *once I finally summoned an NPC.* It didn't even occur to me the first time to try that!

Very cool.

The Bed of Chaos fight was frustrating as hell. Something about the horrid prospect of running all the way back to the boss kept psyching me out, making me miss the (seemingly not-so-tough) jump down to the tree root. And, argh, those swipey arms ... SWIPEY ARMS!
