2012, end of the world, or end of your pile? - the 12 month thread

As someone who trudged through Borderlands and decided that there was no way I was playing the DLC (even though I had all of it from the GotY edition):

Your feelings are normal. I played as a siren and I think I was in the mid-thirties at the end. It was entertaining, to a degree, but it was also really monotonous.

I'm not even sure I'd recommend trudging through.

You know what, I bet you're sick of spider ants by now, aren't you? Guess what — your going to fight a lot of them in almost every area for the rest of the game. Spider ants are indicative of that games biggest issue for me — not enough ingenuity in the 2nd half of the game.

I haven't bought a game in like 2 paychecks. I am getting antsy. Must stay strong.

Now that I think about it, I will greatly second this. I think there's new enemy types in the DLC, but my solo Brick experience was a lot of dodging and shooting things. There wasn't a ton of enemy variety in the game, and the "champion" monsters were either more HP or elemental aligned. Also some of the later monsters were downright annoying to fight.

Diablo II operates on a similar level (although more variety between Acts) but I feel like most skirmishes in Diablo last a minute at most in a solo run. Borderlands fights are a lot more protracted which dampens the enthusiasm.

The lack of fast travel in the DLC is also a major turnoff and I think that's part of the reason why I failed to stick with completing Knoxx the first time around.

Hmmm. I think I have a candidate for the "deathlist" that ClockworkHouse was talking about. Although I'd like to at least try playing the game with the other 3 classes at some point.

The Silent Hill HD collection comes out in a couple weeks, as does Final Fantasy XIII-2. Someone please dis-enable me.

You aren't even playing the games you have now - why buy more, Mr. 98:)

You haven't even played the first.

Done. BOOM, winning!

Let's see: one is getting buckets of praise for being a real return to form for the series. The other... has a good soundtrack? I feel no obligation to play games in order if a sequel is better than its predecessors.

Well crap. There have been 3 games I've seen today that made me interested. X-COM: Enemy Unkown, Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning and Castle Story. But honestly, I'm feeling I'll be able to resist the lure of all of them, unless Enemy Unkown nails it.

Same here. I'll wait for the reviews to hit, but X-COM: Enemy Unknown is likely a first week purchase if they do it justice. I just can't bring myself to update my list twice in one week with additions rather than completions.

Because Final Fantasy just isn't good anymore, duh. Why would you torture yourself with Squenix's own attempt to imitate themselves?

I understand the antsiness, SallyNasty. I'm glad that the only things I bought during post-Christmas sales were X-Men: Destiny (already off the pile) and Warhammer 40K: Space Marine.

I've discovered something this week. Now that my job has hit a major swing and I'm really in the thick of it with tons of multi-tasking, and coupled with an hour and a half drive home, I'm not really in the mood to think too much. Unfortunately, a lot of AAA games involve some form of thought. Vanquish is very fast-paced and kind of feels simple for a modern shooter, but there's always so much going on in the battlefield that it's pretty hectic.

Which is where Bastion came in. It's simple enough that I can play it while relaxing.

So I think, if I want to game after work but don't have a lot of time to play or the brain power for bigger releases, I'll just open up Xbox Live Arcade or PSN and see what I've got downloaded. Try and get through Vandal Hearts after this, or complete my replay of Final Fantasy VII.

Or I could actually sit myself down with my 3DS someplace other than the toilet (I swear, I could never understand why anyone would read in the bathroom until I started working full-time).

Either way, I think this should help knock some of the smaller items off the pile.

Despite its current slowness, Goozex is great for this sort of thing. I have three games coming to me this week, for $0 outlay.

ClockworkHouse wrote:

Cost decreases the further away from launch that you purchase the title. FFXIII at launch = $AU119. I bought it MUCH later for $AU19.

Best part, I still got 80+ hours enjoyment out of it. Wait a little while, work on the pile, then pick up both for a lot less (either through retailers reducing price for new, or bagging it on eBay for a good condition second hand copy).

More bang for your buck. That's the theory behind my purchased list being a dollar allowance. I let the need for new override available playtime/budget more often than I care to recall.

SallyNasty wrote:

Congrats! It's a hard reflex to tame, but trust me, you need to do it otherwise you truly will be Northern Hemisphere me.

Well, so much for not getting new games... at least I didn't break any of my tenets... it was a gift.

Add Mortal Kombat (9) and Bioshock to the list. Oh well hehehe

Updates:
The King's Quest series is done. There is no way I would have completed them without walkthroughs, but the experience was still worthwhile. I'm putting a bunch of time into Warband right now. I am at a net negative in terms of completion, though, as SPAZ and Rock of Ages came to be mine this Steam sale, and I need to complete both of them...

In the waning hours of the first week of GTASC, in order to put some points on the board, I bought a couple Windows Phone games. *sigh* But I wrapped up Mario Kart 7, so that counterbalances it a bit.

In other news, I started up Majin and the Forsaken Kingdom, and it's great. I also started Pilotwings Resort, and it's also fun. It's an expanded version of the Wii Sports Resort flying mini-game, and that's a good thing, as far as I'm concerned.

I, Clocky, solemnly pledge to take part in the Pile of Shame monthly threads. Even if it is just for one game, I will put forth effort to clear my ever-growing pile, one game at a time.

I also pledge to do everything within my ability to restrict my game purchases to those that I've listed, and, if I should falter, will shamefully add them to the pile in full sight of this support group.

My goal this year is to avoid buying any games. I have such in insane backlog, and very little time anyway. Not to mention there aren't really any games in 2012 that I really want, except for Mass Effect 3. I may make an exception if the new DCS sim is released.. but it hasn't even been announced, so that's highly unlikely.

Ok... so I'm 8 pages behind already. I'll make a full post later tonight.

This would be much easier to update if I remembered what last page I posted on...

Just keep a .txt file handy, then paste that in when you want to update your stats.

My Backloggery

So here goes nothing. I doubt I'll be able to finish all of these but it should give me enough options to focus on the pile and avoid unnecessary purchases for the whole year.

Looks like you get a couple months respite from this decision.

I'm terrible at finishing anything. Last year I only managed to finish Uncharted 1 and 2, to my great shame. I get shinyitis, but no, really, I swears, I turn it around in 2012.

Games I Want To Finish

Yakuza
Skyrim
Persona 3
Pokemon Black
Arkham City

Games I'll Be Buying This Year

Xenoblade Chronicles

Games I'll Be Buying When They Hit Under $30

Battlefield 3

I have to believe.

Did anyone here play Darkspore? I grabbed that in a moment of weakness/show of support for Maxis last year, but I never got around to it. I'm pulling Torchlight from the list, but I have a feeling that EA is going to kill the server for Darkspore this year or next as they usually pull the plug on matchmaking after 2 years for most games.

Anyways, here's the new list...

Games already in my collection I want to finish/watch the credits roll this year:
Bastion + DLC (PC)
Chrono Trigger (DS)
BioShock (PC)
Magicka + DLC (PC)
Half-Life (PC)
Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty (PC)
Mass Effect + DLC (PC)
Borderlands DLC (PC)
Front Mission (DS) Final Fantasy X (PS2)
Megaman X Collection (PS2)
Megaman Anniversary Collection (PS2)
Defense Grid + DLC (PC)
Super Meat Boy (PC) Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask (N64)
World of Goo (PC)
Gish (PC)
Deus Ex: Human Revolution + DLC(PC)
Saint’s Row: The Third (PC)
Serious Sam BFE (PC)
Legend of Zelda Skyward Sword (Wii) *
Orcs Must Die! + DLC (PC)
Bulletstorm (PC)
Metroid Prime 2: Echoes (GCN)
Need For Speed Underground 2 (PC)
Deus Ex (PC) *
Kirby Mass Attack (DS) *

Status: 0 of 25 (0%)

* = In Progress

2012 Releases I will be purchasing:

(I will probably be acquiring a PS3 this year so this list is subject to change)

Borderlands 2 (PC) - Day 1
BioShock Infinite (PC) - Day 1
Diablo III (PC) - Day 1
Starcraft II: Heart of the Swarm (PC) - Day 1
Xenoblade Chronicles (Wii) - Day 1
Final Fantasy Type-0 (PSP) - Day 1
Kingdom Hearts 3D (3DS) - Day/Week 1 pending reviews
The Witness (PC) - 1st month
Torchlight II (PC) - Dependent on completion of Torchlight
Carmageddon Resurrection (PC) - Possibly month 1 pending reviews
Luigi’s Mansion 2 (3DS) - Possibly month 1 pending reviews
The Last Story (Wii) - Pending NA release
Kid Icarus (3DS) - Pending reviews
Final Fantasy XIII-2 (PS3) - Day 1? OST + Artbook in the Limited Edition is really tempting
Ni No Kuni (PS3) - Day 1. JRPG and Studio Ghibli. Cannot resist.
Journey (PS3/PSN) - I completely forgot I could get this now. Month 1 pending reviews.
South Park (PC) - Pending reviews. Might be a good Steam sale candidate.
Dishonored (PC) - Pending reviews. Also, Steam sale candidate.

2011 and Prior Releases I will be purchasing and at what price:

Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core (PSP) - $15 or less

That does make it easier.

And the first one goes down. Played through DE:HR - The Missing Link. Moved on to Rage (barely 3 months old), since the latest AMD Catalyst solved the last major graphical bug, that made the game unplayable.

So I dove into Batman Arkham City via my $1 GameFly month I'm in, and so far it's been... decent.

I'm kind of at in my personal lull in gaming, and I'm not feeling the urgency to dive back into it. I'm focusing on the main story and getting that taken care of, if I can, before my month is up on the 18th. Not sure I'll make it to the HD MGS collection, but may consider purchasing it.

Mass Attack should be going down tonight which means I'm back on Skyward Sword pretty soon here.

Also, dropped a pre-order on Xenoblade yesterday. Still contemplating XIII-2.

Not enough updates to really justify posting a current version of the list. I think every 2-3 months or 2-3 games beaten (which ever comes first) seems like a good enough cadence.

I hear you on that, I've been pretty diligent at working on my backlog since the middle of last year, but now being back at work after the holidays I'm putting in 10-12 hours a day. When I get home I spend some time with my daughter and my weekends are pretty much taken up with getting our house ready for sale (baby #2 on the way in July). Whenever I do find myself with some rare free time I'm too tired/lazy to engage in a video game.

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney (iOS) is complete! Was a lot of fun, some great dialogue, was stumped occasionally, sometimes the game is picky on what exact piece of evidence it wants in order to prove a contradiction. It does make me want to play the Wiiware ports of the other two games (I don't have a DS) in the trilogy, though reviews make it seem that the port isn't very well done.

I've added Space Marine to my 2011 game purchase list, I hear its just a fun game and a short campaign, which sounds like a good fit. I also removed Catherine because the ending was spoiled for me via the Giant Bomb GOTY 2011 Deliberations podcasts. I may watch on YouTube how the last 40% of the game goes just to see how it all plays out.

I've also added a few smaller games like Renegade Ops and Rock of Ages to my Side Goals.

I've also been plugging away on Puzzle Quest, it's probably the first game on the Kindle Fire that feels like a full fledged game and I'm really enjoying it. I also hope to dive back into Trenched to finish it off as well soon.
