Out with the New and In with the Old

EDIT: Oops, turns out I don't own FEAR (thought I did) so scratch that off-- just Limbo for the moment.

Does thinking you own a game and then discovering you don't count as a success in pile elimination?

Beats my problem, which is thinking "Hey, that game looks pretty good, maybe I'll pick it up" and then realising that I already own it.

You are not alone.

I have a blog going for my pile, and I also include movies, TV shows, and books. It's a testament to my geekdom, I suppose, that I go through video games faster than anything else.

That is quite interesting, a very cool way to go about it.

Nice, and adding to my RSS reader! I was contemplating doing something similar but I want to see how much progress I can make in a month before I seriously consider writing about it.

Glad you guys like the idea! It's both fun and motivating. I get a ways into the month without anything to post and I start thinking "gee, I need some content..."

I generally try to post about 10 times a month or so, but I've also taken to blogging Steam Sales, and I'll probably start doing various bundle packs as well. For 2012, I'm thinking I may start doing monthly lists of stuff.

FEAR 3 is down...damn that's a short game. Pretty mediocre one too.

***

Damn. That was easy : Blackwell Legacy is also down. Great little story, but emphasis on the little. Felt more like the demo to a larger game - had I paid full price for this (I think it was £10 for a long time) I'd be feeling really cheated right about now, but since I got all three games for less than that in a sale then it's probably fine. Hopefully the next two games are a wee bit more substantial though.

Tuesday's server maintenance time for TOR, so I'll see what else I can add to the list to fill the time tommorrow...

Finally tossed The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King into the fires of Mt. Doom.

Despite some rough spots, this is a pretty good game. Considering it's a 2003 movie licensed title, that means it was proof that miracles could happen. Right from the very beginning, the way EA nearly seamlessly melded film footage into gameplay made for an incredible "you are now playing the movie!" experience. The brawling action is as simple or as complicated as the player wants to make it as button mashing will allow progression most of the time, but the use of combos leads to better scores, rewards, and experience earned, which can be spent on new combos and various stat and weapon boosts.

The story is smartly split into the Path of the Wizard, Path of the Hobbits, and the Path of the King (Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli), and hits on all of the major scenes, although some are more successful than others. Shelob's Lair, in which Sam has to battle large numbers of fast moving little damage-sponge spiders is a particular downer, but some of the boss fights are also needlessly frustrating, such as the Witch King. Nonetheless, the feeling of controlling the movie is usually deftly executed, and the film's soundtrack, video clips, and voice samples do an adept job of immersing the player. On top of all this, there is a co-op mode which works surprisingly well. All around, Return of the King is a solid game, but by the standards of movie licenses of the time, it's amazing.

---------------------

My third pick for the month will be Trine (PC). I started playing for the Steam sale achievement and am loving it. After 2 or so hours, I'm already on the sixth level, which is about 40% through the game.

Dragon Age 2 for me.

Dead Space 2 completed.

Is SPAZ old enough to count? I've started it and seem to be hooked right now. Maybe I'll finish it.

Hm yeah, Aug 15. Ok that'll do.

It counts as a sure sign you have a problem.

Also, it sucks because the franchise was just on sale and I missed on buying this game I thought I bought a long time ago and didn't play. Alas, think I'll live.

I'm going to try to knock out three ones that I've been working on:

Puzzle Quest 2 (on Kindle Fire)
Trenched (XBLA)
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney (iOS)

Hoping to get 2012 off to a fast start!

Once upon a monster is done. Very cute game, my kids loved it, and the wife and I had a good time plying it with them too.

This will no doubt be played over and over and over and over..........

OK. Hunted : The Demon's Forge is next up.

In an effort to focus my time spent on either platform, I will continue to work on Borderlands GOTY (PC) and Chrono Trigger (DS), although I am not to hot about either of them.

I'm working on beating Age of Wonders after never beating it when I bought it in high school, and playing some AI War: Fleet Command multiplayer.

Also going to try to beat Broken Sword: Shadow of the Templars this month. AdventureGaming.com just listed it as the #4 adventure game of all time, after all...

You can add me to the lest that's planning on besting Vanquish (360) this month. I also plan on taking on Limbo (xbla) and starting up Mass Effect 2 (360), although I likely won't finish that one up this month.

I'm going to start by finishing up Titan Quest (PC) and then ponder my various piles before deciding what to hit next. One thing is for sure: it won't be a handheld game this month - between Super Mario 3D Land and trying to catch up on my monstrous pile of books, I'll have very little time to jam one in.

Bastion is finished. I liked what they did with it, but I'm not going for new game+

Please put me down for Dawn of War II and Bastion. That's about all I can handle and play SWTOR.

Going to stick Super Mario Galaxy 2 on the list as well. Finally in the mood to give that a spin.

I'll weigh in for DoWII: Retribution (that is I'll at least do the Space Marine campaign I've started anyway).

You're in for a treat. Best game ever. Not kidding.

Yeah, still may favorite platformer.

Dang! I hardly managed to get through a couple of the last thread's picks... I guess I'll keep it simpler this time, let's see...

OR NOT!

Jade Empire spilleth over as well as Lego Batman 1K run (I only have a handful of cheevos left to kill that off) and Blue Dragon ought to do.

Lost in Shadow is done! It's is a really neat game, and I recommend it to anyone with a Wii, particularly fans of arty platformers, Japanese games, and overlooked gems. It has some issues, but overall, I think it's a good game. More detailed impressions starting here in the catch-all, then on through the next couple comments.

Finished Hunted: The Demon's Forge. It's...not terrible. VERY Repetitive gameplay but kept me hooked for the banter between the main characters if nothing else.

I flubbed my last set of goals. I said I'd finish DA:Awakenings then go on to play Dead Island but thanks to Minecraft, Terarria, and Batman, I did neither of those. At least I finished Arkham City even though it wasn't on my list.

Put me down for DA:Awakenings again. I plan to power through it now that B:AC is done and then move on to Skyrim.

I re-assessed how I play Borderlands and I think I'd be better off making that a long-term project. Please replace it with "Deus Ex: Human Revolution - The Missing Link".

On second thought, maybe I'll just go to Hel:
