2012, end of the world, or end of your pile? - the 12 month thread

Oh crap it's January 1st and I still haven't done my list of games for the year.

Jan. 1st update!

I've edited in times from howlongtobeat. Mostly going for full completion, and just taking the average, so hopefully most of these will be shorter. Also estimating when there are not enough or no data points for games.

Monkeyboy, here's my backloggery link.

Games in my collection I want to finish/watch the credits roll (alphabetical by platform).

2011 and Prior Releases I will be purchasing and at what price - list of releases
These are the games I will restrict myself to when the buying urge comes upon me, and for lower prices than I normally would purchase (unless digital). I will not necessarily buy all of these games.

 • The Witcher 2 (PC) - $20 or less
 • Driver: San Francisco (360) - $20 or less
 • Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (360) - $25 or less
 • Forza 4 (360) - $30 or less
 • Saint's Row the Third (360) - $20 or less
 • Orcs Must Die! (PC) - $5 or less Purchased for $3.74
 • Rocksmith (360) - $40 or less
 • Bastion (XBLA) - $7.50 or less Purchased for $7.50 on the nose

Status: 2 of 8 (25%)

Side Goals

 • Finish up achievements in Prototype, Viva Pinata, all three Rock Band games I own, PGR3, Fable II , Borderlands, The Maw, Ilomilo, NIER, Banjo Kazooie, and a few other games that I haven't quite polished off.
 • Focus on the 360 enough to support my team for as long as we're in the GTASC
 • Finally reach that elusive 90% completion at TA after hitting 88.9% so many times.
 • Stay the hell away from a PSP, Vita, and 3DS. I want them so badly, but a whole new platform is opening up a can of worms I don't need to deal with right now.
 • plop anything gained from burning down points on Goozex to the rear of the queue, excepting Alice: Madness Returns.
 • Time permitting, get further into the three Atlus JRPGs I have looming over me on the PS2: Digital Devil Saga 1 and 2, and Nocturne.

I, Minarchist, solemnly pledge to remain incredibly awesome just like I am now. Also, to take part in the Pile of Shame monthly threads. Even if it is just for one game, I will put forth effort to clear my ever-growing pile, one game at a time.

I also pledge to do everything within my ability to restrict my game purchases to those that I've listed, and, if I should falter, will shamefully add them to the pile in full sight of this support group.

After beating every cup on 50cc.

That's when I'll mark it beaten, then.

I bought and finished VVVVVV on 3DS yesterday, so that's a wash. Considering selling my 360 and its pile after GTASC is done. We'll see.

I guess that is one quite drastic way to reduce the pile.

My pile is actually larger than the 2011 pile, and I didn't see the end credits on many games this year.

For some reason I never unwrapped Vanquish until now, despite being just the kind of shooter I've needed for, like, the entire 2011. This will probably get knocked off the pile pretty quickly.

Alright, here's my list of games I own that I am going to get through by the end of the year. They are ones that should warrant me giving up my Gamer Card if I didn't complete them. This is all keeping in mind that I am planning on not buying any games until calendar year 2013 -- which as previously stated, I will need your emotion support with. Today is Day One. I imagine The Shakes and Sweats will be coming a little bit later.

TO BEAT
Xenoblade Chronicles
Bioshock 1 and 2
Bully
Gears of War 2
Bahamut Lagoon
Terranigma
Saint's Row 1, 2, and 3
The Witcher 2
Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective
Amnesia: The Dark Descent
Blade Runner (the old PC one)
World of Goo
Mega Man Legends
Disaster: Day of Crisis

Man, some of these have a lot of game time in them until I get the Complete status.

Just added that to my Backloggery banner for this month, which means progress will be made.

I threaten to sell my 360 at least twice a year. I'm actually pretty serious about it this time, but, like I said, we'll see.

That's funny -- I thought the obvious follow-up would be "How much would you want for it?".

The short version, without all the navel-gazing, is that I think I'd be happier playing fewer games on just one console than having a huge pile for multiple consoles. Thinking about it, my 360 has fewer upcoming games I'm interested and fewer past games I want to hang on to, so it gets cut.

Obviously a pretty drastic decision, but it's one I've been thinking about for a good long while.

Sounds similar to my situation, I bought a PS3 to go with my 360 back in college, because well...I played a crap load of games.

After getting a real job and doing grad school at the same time I couldn't really devote the necessary time to two consoles and the PC, so I was heavily considering selling my 360...and then...

...it red ringed. So I the only decision I had to make was to not buy another one.

My resolve will be tested when Halo 4 hits...I am a huge Halo fan but I am hoping I can hold out to whatever comes after the 360

For those that missed it, Hemidal's January thread for your monthly commitments is over here.

I imagine I will be adding to this list a lot as the year goes on but for right now this will do..

I'm going to do mine a little differently this year. Listing specifics made me hanker for those not on the list last year and I suffered a little pile paralysis because of it. Full list within Backloggery (link in sig) but for now, I'm going with simple to start. I will need to tweak some of these, as I need to add in a few last minute purchases prior to Jan 1, and also a few Steam gifts I received. I also need to decide what iOS games I'm actually going to play, and which ones I downloaded just because they were on special for that day.

Games in my collection I want to finish/watch the credits roll.

My 2011 efforts to make a dent in the pile were somewhat successful, but I went back on my pledge too often. I hope this year to focus more on the games that I want to complete and clearly define what new games I want to buy. I resolve that 2012 will be a better year for pile clearing than 2011 was.

As I am starting part-time graduate school, I imagine my gaming time will dwindle, but I hope to avoid buying new games outside of what I’ve listed below. I also know that I’ve listed a lot of longer games and fewer shorter ones, which could be a problem, but these are games that I want to experience.

I've also added my entire collection into my Backloggery and will be making some edits for Wishlist and other items. My Backloggery

Thanks to m0nk3yboy, trueheart78, Heimdal, Clockwork and all of those who help and support our efforts to clear our piles.

I, Apollo0507, solemnly pledge to take part in the Pile of Shame monthly threads. Even if it is just for one game, I will put forth effort to clear my ever-growing pile, one game at a time.

I also pledge to do everything within my ability to restrict my game purchases to those that I've listed, and, if I should falter, will shamefully add them to the pile in full sight of this support group.

In addition, I’d like to put the following purchase controlled in place:

 1. Avoidance of Steam Sales, both major sales and daily deals
 2. Avoidance of the Deals Thread to avoid additional pile adding
 3. Not restarting my GameFly account, no matter what deals they offer me to return

Although I checked it every day of the Steam sale but two, I only picked up the DE:HR DLC and Limbo. Was quite happy with not having added to the pile more than 5h, but then I got home and saw that various friends had gifted me Witcher 1, Fallout NV, Orcs Must Die, Machinarium and SPAZ. Good thing that I can leave those in the gifts and guest passes inventory for now, so they don't show up in my library.

Since I was on vacation over the holidays, I only managed to get 1 hour of gaming in (Chrono Trigger DS). The Kindle Touch I got as an early Christmas present may have played a certain role as well. Oh well, time to look at the pile and commit to something for January.

I also added the unwritten rule I've been trying to stick to for the last 3-4 months as the second paragraph of my pledge:
In addition, I will only purchase games older than 3 months under the following condition: for every 2 pile games finished, 1 new pile game may be added.

What's this GTASC thing I keep hearing about?

I'll update this tonight when I get home. I'm going to work on the Steam backlog (271 games or so, the bulk of which aren't finished) this year. I'm not going to purchase anything in 2012 myself. I'm getting one game a quarter form the wife and daughter and then Father's day, birthday and Christmas, but no spending on myself. I almost didn't make it past January 1 (really thought about picking up Skyrim on Steam on the repeat sale day).

I will be strong this year!

I, Clocky, solemnly pledge to take part in the Pile of Shame monthly threads. Even if it is just for one game, I will put forth effort to clear my ever-growing pile, one game at a time.

I also pledge to do everything within my ability to restrict my game purchases to those that I've listed, and, if I should falter, will shamefully add them to the pile in full sight of this support group.

My plan at this point is to play through the 360 games mentioned in my "most want" section and then sell my 360 for a Roku player and cash toward a WiiU.

You still have to play Catherine. Whether you buy it or I loan it to you, that comes first.

...at least it's not very long.

What's this GTASC thing I keep hearing about?

It the Great True Achievements Score Chase. A few of us in this thread, also frequent to the GWJ True Achievement thread. We boost together, and such, but this year we managed to get two teams into the event. It's a knockout event, the two lowest scoring teams removed every week, out of a field of 100. Goes for about 40 weeks, and we are goign to see how far we can get (for fun, honest).

I am using that as a motivator for getting through a LOT of my 360 backlog. The more I play, the more Gamerscore I collect, the better we place in the competion. Playing more, reduces pile. It's a win win for me (almost about to knock off my second 360 game for the year, and it's only 4 days in).

Hope that clears it up (and if you do any 360 gaming, you should join us too).

I plan to. And I expect that I'll take long enough on the pile to get XCOM, although I'll probably miss Metal Gear Rising and Bioshock Infinite. I'm more excited for a Jordan Thomas game than a Ken Levine game, anyway, though.

What do you think of DeathSmiles? As insanely hard as billed?

It does. Thanks!

Hard to say. I have a soft spot for side scrollers, and the patterns of the bullets are starting to be remembered, which is scary. The ones I am picking off, don't seem that hard to me, but the ones with the HUGE TA ratios are well deserved. All areas without a continue would be a brutal task, and those numbers reflect it. I think that's why I defined what would count as 'completed' in Hemi's thread. 1K in that will be tough. Not sure if I will cover them for the GTASC period, but I certainly want to give them a crack when I can hone in on just that title.

It's a game I will not be trading.

Backloggery - though I haven't put future games in yet.
