The Binding of Isaac

Another trick I found that might be helpful: If you find yourself in a room with spike-surrounded loot and no decapitation powerup, you can actually walk diagonally across non-adjacent spike traps without taking damage.

I constantly forget about this. I also like the fact you can bomb piles of rubble to make impromptu land bridges if they're next to a pit. That was a very nice serendipitous discovery early for me.

Killed mom for the first time and then got moms heart on the next playthrough. What I have learned is that brimstone is mah shiiit.

Man, every time I play this game I feel like I need a cleansing shower afterward... and a psychotherapy visit.

Every time I've tried playing this game I feel like I need to buy a new Xbox controller. The analog sticks seem to be borked on my current one as far as this game is concerned. Constantly firing off the right if I leave it centered, so it messes with my offensive capabilities.

Are you using JoyToKey? Try setting the input threshold higher, maybe to 30-40% or so, that should help.

I'll try that, thanks! (but I do see the right stick has a visible lean to it if I don't manually center it.... maybe it's my imagination.)

The Fez just unlocks another character.

Just got my very first mom kill. Slot machines all over the place on this run, and I got 5 dollar bills total. Bought friggin' everything. Ended up maxed in all skills with chocolate milk, book of revelations, a 3rd level meat cube, 2 pretty flies and lord of the pit. Mom didn't stand a chance.

Just started a new game and realized that. Edited my post, but you're too fast

How'd you get meat cubes without horsemen being in the dungeon?

He's probably talking about killing mom's heart, not mom herself. The game stats page only counts heart kills as mom kills.

Edit: He's definitely talking about mom's heart, since that's where you get the fez.

Ah right. My bad.

Magneto + Anarchist Cookbook is an amusingly terrible combination.
-summon a room full of bombs
-bombs are attracted to you
-run like hell

Equally amusing is if you come across Wrath after picking up Bobby-Bomb. You can just sit back and watch him drop bombs that are immediately attracted back towards him.

What are the controls in this game? Will I be able to play it with a trackpad?

Yes. It's similar to a twin-stick setup. I use WASD and the arrow keys to control things.

Good, that's what I was hoping for.

While I haven't hit the ridiculous amount of playtime in this game that Spunior and JollyEskimo have, I still managed to put almost 17 hours in over the last two weeks! That's more than any of the 50-60$ games I've purchased over the last few months.

I LOVE this game.

I just leave the game open in the background when I'm doing other things because I really don't want to lose the loot/progress. That probably accounts for a good 50% of my in-game time =D

Another thing, I've noticed that since the last patch or two that the game has become significantly harder... picking up much less good loot and sometimes not picking up bombs/keys to access items at all in the first level or two. Secret rooms seem to be nerfed a bit as well, 9 out of 10 times it's either a slot machine or just straight coins.

Unlike the traitorous jollyeskimo ( ) I'll go ahead and state that probably about 9-10 hours of the playtime I got out of TBoI can be attributed to me having the game paused - the rest is pure addiction. I actually haven't played many games this year, but this one really got me. I assume it's the mix of randomness, accessibility, the desire to unlock all items, and the time it takes to complete the game. "Eh, only takes an hour, and I'll probably die earlier anyway, so LET'S DO THIS!"

I defeated Satan with Isaac, Cain, and Judas so far. Eve is... interesting. The bird item is neat, but she seems to have the lowest initial attack power of all characters--even the small black flies require two hits!--, so things can get frustrating quickly if you don't get any damage upgrade. Also wonder if the most recent patch nerfed the Book of Revelation/Battery combo - as in lowering the chances of actually getting it.

I saw a Steam update pop for this game today. Looks like they added a Krampus boss. This game just keeps on giving. =D

I just cannot beat Sheol. All the rest (except for no damage cheevos) done but Sheol runs and its frustrating.

Yeah, I've only beaten Sheol once with Cain and I had some really good items that run. It's certainly a level up in difficulty.

I can get there and defeat the first part of his three part no issue.
Its the second that gets me, especially his no start up laser mouth.

I made it to Satan's third form once, but just got completely obliterated.
I can't wait to see the new Krampus boss! I saw it in the list of global steam achievements a while ago.

If you arrive in the last stage and happen to have a decent amount of health, don't hesitate to use bombs to blow up doors and move through rooms with difficult enemies instead of defeating them and losing HP in the process. The boss fight: I always found it easier to just stay to the left or right of Satan - you don't have to move a lot to dodge the bullets, and he won't be able to use the lasers. And your shots will constantly cause damage. If he comes too close, you gotta switch sides and probably take a laser hit while doing so. It helps TREMENDOUSLY if you have Gish or the spider bite upgrade for your bullets because if Satan slows down, so will his projectiles. Way easier to dodge then. Obviously enough, the bullet upgrade that will briefly paralyze enemies doesn't hurt either. The third phase: Focus on the floating eye thingies instead of the legs. Hit them while moving around to avoid getting stomped. IMO, the game and the boss fight is notably easier if you get the brimstone item in the Devil's Room. Totally worth the heart you may have to sacrifice. Hits hard, doesn't get blocked by objects and is way better to get rid of the floating eye thingies in the in the third boss phase.

Oh man, after like months of not playing I just sat down and did a full clear with Maggy. I had some bad luck early on, not getting keys to open the item doors. The most useful upgrades I got were +damage (The Rock, The Pact, Max's Head), Mom's Bra, The Wafer and Little Gish. Those last two were especially vital since I didn't have much health and don't think I could've done the final boss without them. I also had the spectral tears from the Oujia Board but I kinda wish I didn't get them, not worth a heart container in my opinion.

Spoiler:

I got to Satan with four hearts and finished it with one. The slow from Little Gish made the second phase easy and Mom's Bra let me put on some free damage in the last phase. I played kinda sloppy and hit a bunch of the exploding eye creatures, but I was only taking half a heart of damage each time thanks to the Wafer. First time I got the Wafer I thought it was a crappy item since it does nothing on most of the floors, but it can really save you in The Womb and Sheol.

Now I just have to beat Satan with Isaac, Judas, Eve, and ?. Also find Krampus and any other items I haven't found yet. I doubt I'll ever get the don't take damage achievements, I'm just too sloppy when I play and can't react fast enough in some of those rooms that just screw you.

So I finally picked this up on the Steam sale today for $1.24 and it might be the best purchase ever.

I'm skimming here so I hope this hasn't been posted before. Here is the Joy2Key software with config file specifically for the 360 controller. Just unzip to a folder and run.

Can't believe there's no way to rebind keys in this game at least. I don't use WASD, so that always kills me. Hate.

Guess I'll use Joy2Key. I think it's costing me more than $1.50 of my time to get this to playable for me.

So turns out you don't need to do the not-taking-damage achievements to get Golden God... wheeeee!
