Terraria

Oh, by the way, there's a week and a half left to enable the holiday content (guaranteed snow biome, Santa NPC in hard mode).

Sorry to appear here only to ask a noob question in my first post (does it count as contributing to the conversation that I've been lurking in this topic for a few weeks?) but here goes: multiplayer server setup, gah! Is there not an easy way to do this, especially when all I want to do is set up a multiplayer game between my desktop and my laptop in my own house? Any advice accepted, but know that I've already been through (and befuddled by) the explanation on the Terraria multiplayer wiki and several how-to videos on YouTube. I'm really wondering if ver. 1.1.1 provides any kind of shortcut or more intuitive way to set up multiplayer.

If you're connecting computers via LAN, make sure you are using your LAN IP address to connect.

Are you using the dedicated server program or are you just hosting a server in-game? A dedicated server is preferable if you plan on leaving the server running on your main computer 24/7.

That's part of the question I have. I want to be able to set up the server and not have to go through the whole rigamarole again each time I want to play. Does that mean I need to use a dedicated server? I only need the server to run this game in multiplayer. I don't need it for any other purpose.

Picked this up off the Steam sale and played around with it today. I've become awfully dirty skimming through the posts but are are they any active GwJ servers? It seems like a couple of sprouted up and have since been shut down.

I am not running a server but I just discovered this game.

I am loving it. Cave exploring is really fun and I have not even gone that deep yet.

Don't get addicted like me. 246 hours played. lol.

I'm intrigued by PVP opportunities. The sandbox nature could lend itself to some cool play.

Definitely nice that you can pick up and drop the game easily. Appeals to the sim city in me without getting too dull over time by letting me kill stuff. Plus the loot dropping of the diablo style game. Also getting carried away terraforming the entire (large...) map. Like trying to flood hell with water...

PvP seems like it'd be really crazy or really quick.

Yeah the potential for crazy in PVP is what appeals to me. CTF or some kind of assault/defend game would be fun.

Not CTF, but CTG (Capture The Gem):

I LOVE this game...LOVE IT.

TotalBiscuit and JesseCox have a long running series on youtube where they play together and talk smack and die a lot. Quite Hilarious.

I recommended playing with a friend cause it can get a bit lonely at times, but one of the things that I LOVE I mean LURVE about it is the fact that you can use your single player worlds for multiplayer and vice versa so if you're having trouble with a boss, just bring a friend in a BOOSH! Double Team!

What Else....Oh, I use Hamachi for hosting and joining online games with my friend Mr.Tambora, who is also an avid GWJ Podcast listener and forum lurker. It makes it much easier to hook up with multiplayer games and Hamachi is free. ALSO, I didnt know this at the time, but the guide can tell you what you can build with a specific item if you ask.

I just got through to hard mode in one of my Mining worlds (I have a home world where my wooden fort and snow tower are setup then I adventure into other worlds to strip mine for resources and what not) and am trying to gather enough Cobalt to armor up.

The TotalBiscuit videos are hilarious! I highly recommend them, especially if you have never played the game.

Also I found this while watching one of them.

I love this game, after the gaming O.D. of December 2011 I've been firing it up regularly for short bursts of ore hunting. I've yet to defeat anything bigger than a crawlie or build a proper housing for myself but I'm quite enjoying the survival/gathering part.

I've likewise come back to this game after the December 11 binge. To add some excitement I've decided to play hardcore mode starting from scratch on a brand new world. So far I've made it through the first few nights without dying. It certainly adds a lot of excitement to the game. Highly recommended for those looking for a challenge.

I don't suppose any of you is is running multiplayer server anywhere? I'm happy to poke around in singleplayer, but it's always nice to adventures with other folks.

Okay, so my hardcore mode adventuring is not going nearly as well as anticipated.

First character was killed by a mob of slimes. Bad on me. I should have been more cautious.

Second character was killed by a boulder. I've survived boulders before with characters with more hearts. I guess I never took note of how much damage they can do. Bah.

Third character was killed by an explosive trap. This one hurt. I had a good four or so hours in on this character. It was a little dark and I never saw it. Say bye bye.

I'm not sure I've got the heart to continue this. I love hardcore mode in games but Terraria is perhaps just a little to unforgiving. I'll give it one more shot I think ...

I've contemplated starting up a new multiplayer world. If there is enough interest, I can get it up this afternoon.

And so begins my server blacklist

I would be interested in multiplayer, awful jokes aside. I think we should build 2Fort.

I'd be interested in multiplayer too.

So I started up a new MP server last night for anyone who is interested in joining it. Server details are on the Steam Group. Those of us who were playing last night were starting new characters, so please do so as well if you're going to join up.

Won't be able to get in on this I think, will be on vacation for a couple weeks.

Check out the new space station that I built on my multiplayer server. It even has a working airlock:

I like the space-station idea--at some point I'll have to think about building my own. Of course, wyverns will be a huge problem if the world ever get converted to hard mode.

I'm hoping they'll release some more content for this soon. I'm certainly not complaining about what we have so far! I've put close to 100 hours into this already, it's a real time consumer! I'm just ready for some more stuff, I'm stuck on the hardmode bosses and probably won't get them down. I'd like to see some more widenening of the progression, I think hardmode bosses are a good end point at the moment, but I'd like some more options building up to that point.

I also hope whatever they do is added to another dimension, so I don't have to recreate my darn world again.

The Collector's Edition contains:

*Physical copy of Terraria
*Pickaxe key-chain with the Terraria logo
*Terraria poster
*Terraria trading cards
*Unique in-game pet bunny!

I'm very curious about this pet business.

The pet is a flying rabbit.

Did I miss something? Have there been pets all along and I never knew?

It was a "secret" thing added with the last patch. I assume it wasn't big news because you basically need to buy the game again to get the rabbit, which so far doesn't do anything.

I started playing Terraria this weekend (having bought it a few months ago). I am slowly getting familiar with the system (wow, this tiny game has bucketfuls of D-E-P-T-H!)

There's one question that I'm wondering about though. I suppose the material that the house is made of does make a difference - a red-brick house will attract other NPCs than a wooden house. Now - what is it that counts? The walls (sides)? The wall (background)? The ceiling? Does the flooring make a difference? If I make holes in the background wall and fill'em with glass ('window') - does it add to the house's 'quality' metric?

Are dirt blocks any good for building a house, or just for platforms etc.?
