Space Sims/Strategy Games Catch-All

Somewhat unfair to blame pc gaming as a whole. I'd consider it more of an issue with the game being an MMO.

Also, are you sure you download the beta client? The game's no longer in beta.

Is this the client you downloaded?

You've brought some interesting looking games to my attention. Hopefully I'll be able to get a couple if a little bit of money rolls in this Christmas.

Yeah, that's the one. It could be something on my end, who knows? At first it was constantly asking my permission to run the client updater, so I figured permissions were halting it up. I ran it as an admin and while it doesn't halt up, it does constantly repeat. For a game I'm just curious about, it's not worth downloading again or digging through pages of forum posts or anything. Plenty of good sh*t for me to play on my 360 right now.

And this kind of thing happens to me regardless of genre. While PC games have their strengths for this same reason, I'm always running into headaches stemming from the platform being so open.

Now's the time! The Steam Christmas sale is going on, and there are some ridonkulous deals. AI War: Fleet Command for $5 is criminal, and there are discounts on plenty of the other games listed in this thread like Sins of a Solar Empire, GalCiv2, Space Pirates and Zombies, Space Rangers, etc.

I stopped playing the game while it was in beta months ago. I had completely uninstalled it, so I just downloaded the client and began downloading it again. Seems to work fine for me. *shrugs shoulders* Clearly you weren't meant to be a part of the glorious PC gaming master race.

No argument out of me

I need to be reminded of that once every few months, thankfully this time it didn't cost me any money.

I made a post just for this reason:

Hey guys, a new PC/Mac/iOS game came out today called Dangerous:

http://www.spacegamejunkie.com/1383/...

It's termed a mix between Mass Effect and EVE Online. I hope to try it soon, as it looks neat.

Anyone get X3: Albion Prelude? It's basically patches, advancements and new missions right? Do you know where to go/what to do for these missions?

With that question out of the way I found out I put 60 hours into X3: Terran Conflict. This is a game I tried to love, want to love, but couldn't. Now I am trying it again only this time with little to no learning curve.

I picked it up but haven't fired it up yet. I doubt I will ... even for the achievement. I know how easily that game sucks away hours.

Speaking from a little over an hour's experience with AP, the Argon Peacekeeper start seems to be designed to introduce the new stuff quickly.

I tried to get it but kept getting bogged down with Steam issues. By the time I finally got through the sale was over. Bah.

So, Nexus: The Jupiter Incident is awesome. Picked it up for a steal in the Steam sale and it has been the best purchase of the season.

I got it but I havent installed it yet. This is a good post to prompt me to do so Care to elaborate on its awesomeness to push me over the edge?

X3 Albion Prelude. Prelude to what? And what is Albion? These questions and more I might answer.

So, I tried the trader route with X3:TC for the first 60 hours. Trading is hard by the way. I tried to go the automating route but I need a guide I think.

What do you ex-X3 players recommend I do? Go for bankrupt assassin? Capturing ships and collecting bounties seem like good money. Or should I go for the military pilot and blow up bad-guy ships?

As someone who finally put in the effort several months back to learn X3 TC and get a profitable empire going...i recommend not getting into the X series with albion prelude. It's simply another beefed up X3 version.

The X series is getting a total reboot with the next release supposedly which is supposed to make it easier to get into...even after putting in the effort to learn and play X3...it was just too much work to be worth it and the big fun stuff really wasn't all that great cause they put all the dev effort into the micro management stuff...

I quit after getting an empire going and fully learning how to play. Waiting for the reboot. And Space games are my favorite....

Thanks for the knowledge. I did put in 60 hours into X3 and I was looking for another reason to get back into it so I bought Albion Prelude. This will not be my first time flunking the tutorial (which sucks by the way). I hope the graphical whiz-bangs and other stuff keep me interested into playing X3 to story completion. And please no spoilerz. I'm actually interested in the story about rogue AI and stuff. Even if it's a bad story. Oh, and I might cheat and look up the co-ordinates of one of these abandoned ships I can sell for a million credits - it depends on how frustrated I get.

I only managed to get a few hours and a few missions in, but damn. Newtonian physics are a plus. Add to that, passive sensors keep scanning the ship, so eventually (by eventually, I mean a minute after you get close to another ship) you can order your ship to attack specific parts of their ship. You want your fighters to not die? Specifically target the Flak Cannon. Or, you don't like them launching torpedoes? Take out that launcher. Or just click on the destroy hull button for basic destruction. Only, it doesn't necessarily go boom. It gets disabled and the crew start evacuating. That happens sooner if you target specific subsections of the ship. Or you can send your Commandos to take a hostile ship. The coolest IMHO is how you can decide to bombard with artillary from afar or get up close if you want. Between missions, there's an option to customize your ships a bit, not the look, but the weapons and such, but they haven't gotten too much into that, yet.

The game is no Sins of a Solar Empire. Its mission oriented (so far) and crafted around a specific story where your character is a semihero. Also, a pretty damn cool story where the government is ineffectual and Space corporations are the real super powers and you should know, considering you sold out and work for SpaceTech. Within the missions are some scripted events which (again, so far) don't detract from the gameplay. Also, you get to make choices in game, like whether or not to deviate on your main mission which may or may not help you in your goals.

I'm really excited to get back to it.

Yeah I got Nexus the last sale. Just haven't dug into it yet. Sounds fun. I like campaigns. Was replaying Homeworld earlier this year and that was still fun.

Hey folks!

@SpyNavy mentioned to me on Twitter that I ought to come over and talk with you, so wanted to introduce myself. I'm Dan and I'm the director of Seamless Entertainment in Austin. We're the guys making SOL: Exodus. We're really excited about the game and very close to release so if you all have any questions or want to talk shop about space games, fire away.

While it seems to me that I'd heard the title before, I hadn't actually looked at the details of the game before today when I saw this. The plot and style make it sound a lot like a Freespace descendant, which would be a very lovely thing for this older gamer.

What I didn't see mentioned in my quick perusal of the official site is what kind of flight mechanics the game is using. Are you going with Newtonian physics, or the more traditional "atmosphere in space" style of flight model? I generally find the atmospheric model to be more fun, even if it isn't terribly realistic. Hybrids of the two can also be pretty amazing, I've got fond memories of Auto Slide in the Wing Commander games.

AAAAAAAAND! Will you just go ahead and make a X-Wing mod for us? Please please pleaaaaaassseeee?

Agreed, though I'm also looking forward to Veloxi's take on it!

Welcome Dan. Veloxi is the resident space game afficionado, but most of us have a deep love for the genre as you can tell. Veloxi has a great site that centers around space games, sims, etc... Great group of mature (well not Garion) and knowledgeable gamers and professionals throughout. Glad you could stop by.

He's mentioned your game a number of times, if I recall correctly. I didn't realize (or remember) it was getting released in the near future. That's great!

And Spy ... thanks for the compliment, ya old codger!

What, it's not like any of our nicknames are based on video game space jockey pilots...
