Kingdom of Amalur: Reckoning

Isn't this tied into an upcoming MMO? Wonder if that has anything to do with the graphics?

Yes to the first.

What I'm wondering is if the MMO will have similar combat, since they're making such a big deal about it.

What would be really clever is if it's essentially the same engine.

Yeah, ever since it was announced, Reckoning is taking the Torchlight business model of single-player game first to introduce the IP and generate revenue, then follow up with the MMO version. So it would make a lot of sense to develop some aspects of Reckoning to be easily transferred to the MMO.

I've known about this game for quite a while (I think it was announced at least a year ago), but expected it to be just another generic fantasy RPG. The GB video has at least made me somewhat interested. I probably won't get it at launch, but it will definitely be on my wishlist for next summer's Steam sale.

There will be a .... gulp ... $275 special edition. Nearly double the highest price for a CE i've personally seen.

A special Signature Edition containing all of the content in the Collector's Edition along with "an individually numbered custom sketch by Todd McFarlane" will be limited to 300 units. The Troll figure will be signed by either Todd McFarlane, R. A. Salvatore or Curt Schilling and are numbered 1 to 300. The Signature Edition will be available for $275.00.

I wonder how much limited run drawings from Todd McFarlane usually go for.

THis game....... is it like the marriage or DAO and Skyrim ?
Holy grail if it is

More like Fable, God of War and an Elder Scrolls game. At least that's what I'm getting from it.

It looks fun but the graphics don't look like they are worth paying full price.

1. Wait for Steam sale.
2. Download HD Texture mod.
3. PC. Profit. Oh, yeah.

Course, the game looks fun. Day one for me.

I never noticed the graphics looking kinda crappy til you said something Sally. Thanks.

Seriously though, graphics are a weird thing for me. I definitely appreciate when a game looks great (Rage!), but I almost never hold it against a game when it does not (Dragon Age: Origins!). Sole exception: I sold Battlefield 3 for 360 back the day after I got it in the mail. For a small profit, thankfully. I really have no idea how anyone can play that multiplayer, it's like I'm shooting paintballs and there is next to no visual feedback. Sorry for veering off topic but I've wanted to get that off my chest and didn't want to do it in the actual thread for fear of internet violence.

Reckoning is likely a day-one purchase for me, muddy backgrounds be damned. The character animations and models look good enough, and I'm curious as to what kind of depth they pull off with the combat when it also seems to have such breadth.

What is DAO?

Dragon Age: Origins.

I don't see it in Reckoning. No party, no set classes, no combat pauses. Garrion's amalgam seemed most apt.

Garrion's Amalgam is my new prog metal band's name btw.

Yeah, I see no similarity to DAO. Fable/Oblivion/God of War.

This just looks like Fable done right. And if the world is half as big/well-populated as Skyrim, they can have all my money.

Sorry buddy- I am a huge McFarlane fan and his art was what initially drew me to this game:(

Huh, I just bought Dungeon Siege III from Amazon for $5 for Scratched and I got two promotional credits:

Thank you for your purchase from Amazon.com. It is our pleasure to let you know that you have earned a $9 credit toward the pre-order of "The Kingdom of Amalur" game download good until 12/11/2012. To redeem your reward, simply visit http://www.amazon.com/Kingdoms-of-Am..., pre-order the digital download, and the discount will be automatically applied

And the $5 towards "top selling game downloads of 2011" to be used in January. So, $5 for DS3 and $14 in credit, if I use it.

Come on, man. On-rails shooter. So cool.

That's a cool gaming deal, but to me, Reckoning screams "console game".

Yeah, either way I'll be playing with a controller in hand.

I'm very excited for this game. From what I've seen, it looks like what I've always wanted the Elder Scrolls games to be.

I ignored this game based entirely on its terrible name. Just listened to the Giant Bombcast and they lavished quite a bit of praise upon it. Probably going to pre-order now. Dammit, Giant Bomb...

Pre-ordered today. The destiny system seems prime for an alt-o-holic like me.

If you've got the time, don't forget to watch GB's feature on the game, either or their site, or youtube. It's a great summary of most of the game's content and systems.

Aren't they the dudes who have a premium podcast now?

They have added the Whiskey Media Radio Show. It's basically subscribers calling and having Dave + whoever answer questions, usually in regard to the site (because Dave runs the tech side).

The Giant Bombcast is free, same as ever.

Also awesome, same as ever.

This wasn't on my radar at all, but now it is. If that Fable/Elder Scrolls amalgam leans more toward the Fable side of things, then I'm definitely interested. If it's as unbearably dull as an Elder Scrolls game, then no.

Speaking of Fable and Giant Bomb...

Warning, NSFW on account of Peter Molyneux's balls.

I believe I was called juvenile when I last posted that bit of heavenly hilarity. Or it was, and I felt accused by proxy.

Either way, hot damn. Funny. The underrated part is when MW2, Shadow Complex and Diablo 3 are mentioned.

Only because it wasn't expected of you. I have no such concerns.

So, I'm listening to RPGFan's end of the year podcast. They went through 2011 and then moved on to what's coming in 2012 and spent a bunch of time on Reckoning. I think I'm sold on this game. Like, all the way.

GiantBomb podcasted an interview with one of the developers today. Sounds pretty slick.
