That Wall of Flesh is the key to seeing those cool new things, unfortunately. If you're looking for tips on fighting it:

Spoiler:

Ironskin potion, Molten armor, Night's Edge and a few healing potions. If you know how to control it, a gravitation potion will do wonders. I'm sure you could do with less than what I've recommended here, but that's how I did it, and I ended on 100 hp.

If that seems like daunting preparation work, though probably worth it...

...in the long run. Lay a long, one floor path (preferably of plank) to run backwards on, Shadow armor, Flamerang, and the hardest to attain: a Demon Scythe. I agree with the potions, though preferably Restoration ones would be the best

THIS layout will be ideal after defeating The Wall of Flesh and knocking out some Demon Altars

Don't stop after just destroying 3!

I'm not sure about that. The 1.1 Patch kind of doubled the content . 1.06 was a balance pass.

Too many vertical shafts, ifyaknowwhatimean.

How do you get the torches in the unexcavated areas?

You... eh... click.

In the middle of a rock deposit a dozen tiles from where you are?

I've found you don't need to be immediately next to where you want to place it, but there does need to be a space for it to go. I also recall being able to mine out a block without being right next to it also, but its been a while since I've played.

I don't see any torch not within clicking distance.

Ah, but none of those torches are a dozen tiles from an open area. At most, they're 4 tiles into solid rock.

I still think it's black magic.

AND THIS IS WHY YOU FAIL

Steam group invite would be nice.

Its worth noting that since the new patch. Light doesn't shine through solid earth well at all anymore. So the above tactic is a lot less useful.

With all the extensive patching (and need to restart after each major patch) I'm kinda glad I haven't had time to play this yet. Wonder if the amount of content and amount of changes in the patches will level off at some point.

Really the only annoying thing about restarting is having to build housing for all the NPCs again. What you can do is consider your old world your headquarters and generate a new world to explore the patch content as an "expedition".

With this patch you didn't really need to restart. Everything to populate the world with new ores is avaible using an old world. And even a brand new world doesnt have the new stuff straight off.

Had fun in the Underground Jungle yesterday on Erik's server. He showed me around.. Learned a few tricks. We even got to Hell at one point, but had to log.

Yup, the begining is hard, but once you are setup to explore, it's FUN!

Getting ready to take on the Wall of Flesh soon. Can't wait to unlock Hardmode, I've had enough of the current endgame! Plus it's just such a cool concept for a boss fight.

By the way, it might be a good time to fortify the base area, since the Corruption starts to spread much faster once the Wall of Flesh is defeated. Last I checked, a 3-wide barrier should work.

Yeah I am contemplating attempting to kill the Wall of Flesh this evening or the next on my server. I am not sure how the corruption affects houses, but we might have to move into the Hallows, wherever that spawns.

Another option is to seed the spawn area with Hallowed terrain, since I think the Wall drops some Hallowed seeds. Of course, you lose out on normal terrain that way.

Also, I am thinking moving into the endgame would be a good excuse to build a more intentional/cool base from scratch, full of wiring, traps, cool materials, etc. What do people think about that?

Sthillary and I have our house surrounded by a small barrier of the Hallow, since we've got corruption quite nearby. (Going down our hellevator, under our base, on the left is underground hallow, on the right is corruption.

Also, we both have the wings now. There is a lot of fun to be had raining death from the sky. Demon wings, a shotgun and crystal ammo is my favorite thing in Terraria at the moment. With a bit of doing you can kill most things really fast. It's also good at pinning things for Sthillary to tear apart. We've killed the WoF twice now, and not gotten anything overly cool. (Avoiding spoilers, it drops neat weapons and emblems, as well as the Hammer.)

Edit: You can buy hallowed seeds from the dryad after killing the wall. Word of warning though, in Blood Moons, you get the Hallowed mobs around your house... which are really, really mean. Maybe a better idea is to wall off the corruption with some hallow away from your house. That said, our deathtraps outside of our home base rake in the cash during a blood moon.

Apparently Hallow spreads as much as Corruption in Hardmode, only stopping once it reaches the Corruption (and visa versa). Is there anyway to prevent your world from becoming a big Ying-Yang Corruption or Hallow world after a certain point? I want to keep my base off-limits for instance.

Having air in between your fortress and the ground seems to be the only way. Sky islands will remain untouched unless Hallow or Corruption is manually spread there but certain mobs make it very dangerous place to build anything.

EDIT: It appears (at least for me) that nothing spreads through clay, walling off the corruption/hallow to the side and below ground should be able to keep an area free of taint so long as you don't attract the attention of a Corruptor.

I believe mud also works this way.

I suppose it'll be interesting to see what happens anyway, perhaps I'll pre-barricade my town with clay before killing the Wall of Flesh, at least that way it'll be the last bastion of sanity if the world does go Light vs Dark crazy.

Do sunflowers still block corruption? Will they block hallow as well?

Hypatian wrote:

My understanding is that sunflowers no longer block corruption once hard mode kicks in, which automatically happens after killing the Wall of Flesh.

Sounds like they need to implement a new sunflower-like device for keeping out Corruption and Hallow in Hardmode, basically the Terraria equivalent of Switzerland.

Of course, it's all speculation on my part since I haven't gotten up to Hardmode yet (darn work using up all my time!), perhaps the spread isn't as bad as I'm expecting.

Cacti don't hurt the player anymore. Which is nice. How do you link a pressure plate to a dart trap?

Get a wrench and put down wires to link the two. The mechanic has everything you need, if you've found her.
