The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Mod Thread

Steam workshop going for 3rd parties is massively awesome, probably one of the best things that can happen for PC games that aren't quick and dirty locked down console ports. Not just "you can mod our game", but to build in support to the platform to facilitate it, rather than "grab this rar file (which you need a certain program to use), then extract it to this folder (usually in c:\progra.....), then set the load order, set the following in your config file, type this into the console....".

It probably won't be utopia for 3rd party content, and like most steam stuff it's opt-in, but it's great for getting more eyeballs onto mods, and more people using them. If anything, I'd love it for Valve to push support for it as far as they can for all their games, maps, skins, models, scripts, all within their client. I'd love to see a server running a certain map/mod, and just quickly go get it installed on my game without hunting through a ton of sites.

In other news, ModDB/IndieDB start their mod/game of the year 2011 voting soon.

Note: there has been uncovered some rather unusual issues that come with disabling vsync:

* V-Sync (or iPresentInterval) seems to have a huge impact on many other things ingame, such as the time-of-day the "next day" happens at (day and time move out of sync, which can interfere with many quest triggers etc.), mouse Y sensitivity, physics react violently, nearby water flickering crazily as the camera is moved etc. - why/how has vertical sync been tied so heavily into the core engine itself?

From http://forums.bethsoft.com/index.php...

If you use an FPS limiter to keep the frame rate near 60, I imagine this problem won't have a giant impact; without the limiter I've found my FPS can end up above 1000, which is what causes the crazy physics and mouse sensitivity issues.

That said, if you're dead set on using vsync, I highly recommend installing Riva Tuner and specifically the D3D Override program in order to force triple buffering on.

So does anybody plan on doing any mod projects once the tools are released?

It has been a few years since I really got into the mod community of a game, but I am kind of planning on it for Skyrim, time wise it looks like things will allow me.

I am. Not yet sure what I am going to do. I think I want to start with a simple quest early in the game but am thinking it might be cool to create a new village in a relatively empty part of the map. Maybe have a quest that makes you the Jarl.

I want to mod the son of Whiterun's jarl to say "did I do that?" Or "hey hey hey hey" or something else equally unannoying.

Mont's first mod: Mithril pickaxe. Works just as well as a regular pickaxe but is light as a luna moth wing.

Yeah, gonna have to turn vsync back on now. I like my stores to open on time!

:/ I find mining extremely underwhelming. I carried one for the longest time, trying to RP it, digging up ore whenever I could, living off the land, that kinda deal. Unfortunately, finding deposits is so rare in dungeons, and most of the time it's plain iron that eventually I gave up after a long time.

Transmute all that Iron into Gold, and you've just made a ton of coin.

So that's why my favorite blacksmith was closed at 2:00pm. I just thought my Nords were taking a siesta.

Still not worth running v-sync. It's also pretty crappy programming choice for Bethesda. I guess console players don't have the ability to mess with v-sync so they said screw it.

Buy iron ore from blacksmiths, transmute it into gold, and you just made almost as much coin without having to go anywhere or lug a 10 lb pickaxe around. Iron ore's really cheap.

Good god, you can transmute ore in this game?

My point was that "plain iron" can be made into plain gold, thus making those rare deposits more worth finding. I wasn't saying there weren't easier ways to make money. Good luck finding Ebony at a vendor however, I've yet to see any.

All of the blacksmith in my Whiterun have Ebony right now. I think it might be linked to level.

Yup, it's based on level. Anymore, I can find any material I want to buy at vendors. I still mine all the ore I encounter other than iron, though. Since I love to explore anyway, I tend to run into a lot of different deposits out in the mountains.

Is there a mod that makes all companions (and horses) immortal yet? I'm tired of avoiding fights/reloading games because they keep dying.

I thought BethSoft learned this lesson in Fallout: New Vegas? Losing companions is not fun (especially when they're your pack mule).

Found me an iron mine and spent the next two hours walking around magicking rocks into gold. I like money.

You know, I'd like a mod that increases walking speed slightly, slows running speed slightly, and increases horse speed. That would be pretty nifty.

I had all my quest related items show back up in my inventory last night, a few game days after the Cidna Mine quests. Also, Markarth guards have chilled out. Not sure why, this all happened post patch quest completion and all.

Kamikaze, can you link to those triple buffering mods? I wanna give them a whirl.

Also, played on my 720 TV last night. Buttery smooth, but the res is a bit too low to read the text easily. Any ideas if the font mod might fix that?

Don't skip mining if you like getting free gems. Not that gems are hard to come by otherwise. Just sayin'. Free gems.

Right now I'm playing the "audition all the possible followers to see who you like best" mini-game. Also the "see who makes a pass at me that I might want to marry" mini-game.

Wait, is this a Bioware game?

Miranda looks pretty good in yak fur, and there are plenty of helmets that cover her face.

Then obviously I'm crafting things that are way above my intended level. This makes my set of Flawless Orcish Armor feel out of date, I should be sporting full Ebony, but why bother when I only need 5 Daedric Hearts for a full set of Daedric? Mehrune's Temple, here I come.

Okay, I'm not willing to start over (again) at this point. So, I fired the game up for the first time since the patch and the y axis on the 360 controller's right stick is borked. Left/right x axis movement is fine, but the up/down y axis looking around stuff barely move. I mean, inching. Actually, let me go make a video. (I'll insert that when it's done uploading.)

So, I went ahead and deleted my Skyrim.ini and SkyrimPrefs.ini in the Documents area. This forced me to reset my video setting et al. When I went back in the game, my controls with the 360 controller were back to normal. Problem was that my current game was gone. Only the saves from my first game were there.

I put back my altered ini files and my newer saves come back, but the controller is back to being broken.

I imagine that something in the ini files is required for the game to "see" my newer saves. Any idea what I need to alter in these ini files in order to allow my 360 controller's y axis to work properly again?

Is this the proper place to discuss our mod wish lists?

The first mod I really want is a horse mod that'll let me stable my horse, or tell it to stay somewhere and not follow me. Sometimes I want to ride it. Sometimes I don't. I specifically haven't bought a horse because this behavior is unchanged from Oblivion.

I also want to be able to add Morrowind and Oblivion music to Skyrim. They changed the ability to add custom music easily by dumping mp3's into certain sub folders.

Lastly, what about a mod to easily switch apparel? Like a hot-key system for armor, clothes, jewelry, etc?

Well, you can stop using a horse whenever you want and it'll just fast travel with you whenever you do it. Not as clean as stabling, but you're not forced to keep an eye on the horse.

As far as the apparel idea, man, it's one of the few things Two Worlds II did really well compared to other rpgs (three outfits were mapped to the d-pad). That and lockpicking. I wish games would pick up on those two things.

Try as I might, I can't kill horses or dogs in games. Killing wolves even makes me feel bad. People though... no worries.

So, I'm going to keep trying settings in the ini files to see if I can get this rectified. If not ... I'll be starting over. Maybe I'll be a thief this time ....

Same here. I've gone back to Fallout 3 since I never got around to finishing that and I feel really bad whenever a rabid dog attacks. I have to do a bit of mental gymnastics to keep going.

Can you post your two ini files somewhere we can compare them? It may help track down the issues.
