Legend Of Grimrock

Absolutely. The spells in particular. I can't say I am enamored of the idea that I'd need to quickly click spell runes in real-time to throw fireballs / ice / poison / bees.

I won't be happy until I see how this applies to the King of the Dinobots.

That's classic Dungeon Master, that is In fact, I seem to remember Dungeon Master never even gave you the spells, you had to learn most of them through trial and error by experimenting with runes.

I wonder if this game will also let you cheat by slamming doors down on monsters heads

I will be picking this up for the iPad when it comes out.

I love many old style RPGs but have never enjoyed RTTBFPCRPGs such as this one.

It IS classic Dungeon Master. But that doesn't mean I want to suffer through it again.

Gimme, gimme, gimme, gimme, gimme...

Yeah, saw this on RPS today as well. Looks pretty fun, but as others have said I'd really like to see turn based combat. If it's cheap enough I'd probably get it anyway.

Sure, there might not be a turn based dungeon crawler that looks this good, but it's certainly nice to have something different than the other 90% of the genre.

I keep reading the thread title as Legend of Grimlock.

That happens all the time to me. What the kid in me wouldn't give for a quality Transformers show.

I know its been said a million times but if this was turn based it would look damn near perfect. I'm pretty sure I'll still be playing this though. I loved those old games.

I loved Dungeon master (and chaos strikes back) so I will be getting this the second it lands. The trailer has lots of nice nods to Dungeon Master in the game which fills me with nostalgic joy

Racist.

In case anyone missed this:

Sounds like a classic first person view RPG, with all that entails. I am not sure I have the patience for this kind of grindy, nit-picky gameplay anymore.

[edit]

Weirdly enough, I think it's the real-time management of a party that turns me off. If it was single character, I might be more willing to dip my toe in.

This is entirely why it's a day one purchase for me.

The developers certainly did something I think is cool

When a commenter on the website of Legend of Grimrock asked about clickable on-screen arrow navigation for the upcoming indie dungeon crawler, developers said they had no plans to implement such a feature. When they found out why the commenter asked, they quickly changed those plans.

Legend of Grimrock commenter HarpoonIPA is a disabled gamer, forced to use a mouth stick for typing.

Legend of Grimrock is an old-school dungeon exploration game from developer Almost Human that harkens back to games like Dungeon Hack, Eye of the Beholder, or the Wizardry series. Dungeons are tile-based, requiring only simple movements to navigate. These games often featured the option to use a mouse to click on a series of on-screen arrows, but as developer Petri Häkkinen pointed out in his initial reply to HarpoonIPA, not many people actually used them.

So HarpoonIPA explained why he was asking about the arrows, and Häkkinen added them to the game immediately.

That simple gesture has captured the hearts of countless Redditors, the selfless developers' actions an example of how the tiniest change can make all the difference in a person's life. You can see the full exchange in image format as it was posted to Reddit yesterday.

I'd say it's also a testament to the indie game development process. If this were a big budget title with a well-known publisher, such a change could take weeks to be approved and implemented. Without such constraints Häkkinen was able to make the change without any trouble.

"It was no big deal to implement it, so we thought why not do it," Häkkinen told Kotaku. "I mean, even if it would affect only the life of a single person, it is still totally worth it."

The developers says his team is very humbled by the responses the story has garnered since going wide. "This was all totally unexpected."

Hopefully Almost Human's kindness will translate into big numbers for Legend of Grimrock when it releases on Windows, Mac, and iOS later this year.

Little do they know HarpoonIPA plans to pirate the game ASAP

I'm looking forward to Grimrock, maybe we'll see more old school goodness like this.

I really really wish there was a toggle planned that would let us play this in turn-based mode rather than realtime. That said, it still looks like a blast and I will be all over it when it comes out.

The release window is early April, they're out of beta, and here's their redesigned UI.

sweet

I'm really in the mood to play this, even went back and played a few levels of the original Eye of the Beholder last week.

Same here. I'm supposed to believe all four people are moving around together quickly from tile to tile during combat, like some kind of synchronized dance of death?

As if reality and video games have anything in common? Or, better said, when reality gets in the way of fun, fun wins.

I'm cautiously optimistic about this one but a few positive reviews will be necessary before I pick it up. Too many ways a game like this can go wrong.

Because animated Skeletons and gigantic spiders don't test the suspension of disbelief enough...

I am not sure I like the choice either but I am willing to give it a try based on what I have seen. Of course in the end there will choices I don't like but whta game doesn't have that?

Those are things my escapist mind wants to believe in! The idea of a party of four battle-tested, deadly adventurers leaping from tile to tile like the Pirates of Penzance, not so much.
