Kingdom of Amalur: Reckoning

Playstation mag had a preview of this.. they had one note of caution in their 4 hour preview build.. that much like Fable the exact amount of "open" really in this "open world" game was fairly limited to tightly scripted corridor type environments that funneled them from location to location. That could mean many things.. that the game is scripted in the beginning rather than overwhelming players.. and it opens up more as you get into the game.. or that its more like Fable than we have been shown so far.

Having watched all of the videos, it's very close to Fable's structure. There are open-ended towns/hubs, but the world exploration looks fairly linear, including dungeons.

I think it looks like a Fable/Oblivion hybrid. They are claiming the open world stuff is more like Oblivion, and I hope so. I would still buy it if it was more like Fable, though.

In my search for more podcasts talking about Dark Souls, I have discovered GamePro's Roleplayer's Realm podcast. Turns out episode 19 not only has more Dark Souls (18 started their coverage), but it opens with a conversation between the host, Kat Bailey, and Tom Chick, who got to play the game for a few hours.

So if you're looking for more Amalur coverage, there you have it. Chick also apparently wrote a preview somewhere called "5 Reckoning Myths Debunked" or something.

RPG Fan (the site) posted about this game yesterday, so I asked them how open it was, this was the response I got:

I had a chance to play about 8 hours of the game when I visited Big Huge Games last month. It's not Oblivion in openness, but it's still pretty open. The story quests lead you from hub to hub, and there's a fair bit of exploration. It's certainly far from linear. -JohnM

Sounds like a Fable/Oblivion to me.

I am pretty interested in this game. I think the people making the game want it to be great - but great ideas and great implementation are two different skill sets:)

Call me cautiously enthusiastic.

Btw on the podcast I mentioned, Tom Chick said it was closer to Fable than Oblivion in terms of linearity. I consider Fable to be far more linear, and so this was a little disappointing. I'm still wildly interested in the game, though!

I'll make it even easier on people:

This is certainly the case with some of the areas, particularly early in the game. The first few lands between loading screens are definitely canyons, even though they're supposed to be magical forests with magical forest type names. But if you push eastward far enough, you'll come to a place where the landscape opens up considerably. A town called The Wold is actually a town, and not a set of canyons. This was the first place I felt like I wasn't in hallways anymore. North of here is The Foresaken Plains, which are definitely plains, albeit pretty modest. Don't expect gorgeous vistas, but don't worry about being hemmed in the entire time.

Yeah I'm still way excited and my pre-order is set in stone.. this can't get here fast enough.. but then I'm one of those that generally loved the Fable series so far.

I really liked Fable 1, and though I didn't play 2 or 3, I have considered doing so if only the march of newer, more pressing games would slow down.

The more I play Skyrim, the more I think I want a Fable/Elder Scrolls hybrid game.

Repeated for emphasis!

And I'm gonna leave it like that, cause it's true.

This game's marketing is better than most MMOs', and on par with SWTOR. It had better be good!

...and yeah, part of that might be that they're also planning an MMO in the same universe.

Are you talking about Copernicus? You sure that's in the same universe? Nevermind, it doesn't matter as they won't start talking about that until this ships.

That's what I've heard about Copernicus whenever it's mentioned. I believe it was spoken of during E3 Giant Bombcasts when Rich Gallup is on. He can't comment, but it's a kind of pregnant silence.

They have definitely said same universe. Google Amalur MMO, but there's not much info.

I'm looking forward to this! I feel bad for Kepheus that it's coming out though, because he honestly thought he might get some play time on the Xbox when I finish Skyrim. Poor fool.

What It Is: Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning

I think Skyrim will tide me over until February 7. At least first impressions didn't disappoint, because damn this game looks great.

I had no clue this existed; however, it looks very enticing thus far.

This game is now at the top of my hype meter. I cannot wait for February.

Since GB's now doing youtube, you can even embed that for the lazy

It looks fun but the graphics don't look like they are worth paying full price.

Omg, that map gave me a mapgasm.

To each his own, I suppose. I like the graphics!

Given that this appears to be an entry in what is probably my favorite genre (the single player/character open world action-RPG), I am now very interested in this. Not sure how it had slipped under the radar until recently.

Yeah, it suddenly appeared on my radar just this week. That's the best way, though. No point in waiting months upon months in anxious anticipation of a game.

Yeah, too WoW for me most of the time. I hate how WoW looks. Hate. It.

But I can get past the look, especially since the environments are usually pretty cool.

Frankly, I'm interested to see if the world rises above most of the fantasy games out there. They keep touting RA Salvatore and I truly hope he came up with something interesting.

Don't get me wrong, it still looks really interesting - just the graphics seem a bit rough for this far into the console cycle.

Isn't this tied into an upcoming MMO? Wonder if that has anything to do with the graphics?
