All-Star game

Clemens gets to throw to Piazza.

Mark Mulder better start for the American Leauge or something is seriously wong.

I consider this question to be on-topic...

When does football season start up?

Who''s Mark Mulder?

I usually watch very very little baseball through most of the regular season, the exception being the All Star game and some of the late season ""clinchers"". And in-person games of course...

Kenny Rogers just got win #12.. I do not think Mark will be starting.

What is the reason for this all-star game thingy again?? I mean they are just going to stop it if it is a tie game..

Sentimentality tends to rule at the All-Star game, so it''ll be Texan vs. Texan for this game in Houston, no matter what the records are.

I thought they put in the whole ""world series home field advantage"" thing so it can''t end in a tie, right?

Kenny Rogers just got win #12.

He''s getting 7 runs in support a game....
I would be surprised if he starts.

Mulder is still the best pitcher in the league this season and should get the start. Zito got screwed last year and I''m tired of the A''s not getting respect.

So is Mulder.

I do think Mulder deserves to start though.

Depends on what stat you use. In wins, Rogers ranks at the top of the list for the moment. Mulder is tied for second with Curt Schilling, who has two more decisions (both losses) than Mulder, but has higher strikeouts (if you go just by strikeouts, Mulder ranks at 12, one spot behind teammate Rich Hardin). But, Rogers gets the edge because he plays for Texas. Sentimentality triumphes over stats in terms of starting pitching. Same thing happened at last year''s game in Chicago.

Take the NL, for the other example. Roger Clemens will start for them, that''s almost a given at this point. However, in terms of statistics, he''s tied for second in terms of wins with Randy Johnson (if the game was in Arizona, he''d start without argument), Jason Schimdt, and Brian Laurence of San Diego, all trailing Eric Milton of Philadelphia. He''s 4th in ERA behind Zambrano, Sheets, and Glavine. For strikeouts, again, he''s fourth behind Johnson, Sheets, and Clement. But, sentimentality prevails, and Clemens will start.

I wouldn''t be too hurt if they give Schilling the nod. The way he has pitched in a whole different league, against guys he rarely had to face, in a pressure-cooker of a baseball city, I would say he might be the best AL pitcher so far this year.

Being an A''s fan myself, though, I wouldn''t mind seeing Mulder get the start as well. Say no to Kenny Rogers.

You bosox fans are going to be owned tonight!

I don''t give Schilling any extra credit for switching leagues. In a matchup where the batter hasn''t seen the pitcher before, it''s the pitcher''s advantage.

It may be a moot point anyway; Rogers has a bad hammy that might keep him from pitching his next scheduled start and/or the All-Star game.

But, oddly enough, they give credit to Clemens for doing the same thing.

Yeah, 11 - 0 Boston in the bottom of the 5th. Real ownage there. Zito''s really crapped out this year.

There''s still time for us to blow it.

Being a Cardinals fan, I''m very happy that we have 3 players in the infield starting. I think they are all very deserving of it, especially Scott Rolen and Albert Pujols.

Update: Ulairi can stop his Female Doggoing.

Well, with Schilling out and Rogers flaking, it makes sense.

He''ll own the Natl. leauge.

Maybe for the inning he pitches. I''m willing to bet Ken Macha told Torre to pull him early to save him for his next scheduled start. That said, Mulder is only decent pitcher the AL has at this game; NL has Clemens, Eric Gagne, Randy Johnson, Jason Schimdt, and Ben Sheets. AL is screwed.

I thought the AL was done when Gagne came in to save the ninth last year. You might be surprised at how close this game will be, especially considering it is essentially the AL Yankees. Schilling pulling out sucks though. Him vs. Randy would have been an interesting potential matchup.

Look at it this way: lame-tastic AL pitching vs. Pujols, Bonds, and Sosa. They could run up the score so highly that it wouldn''t be a save situation for Gagne. Besides, as much as I am loathe to defend a Dodger, but that was as a statistical anomaly over the past two years. Other than then and last week, he has consistently been lights out.

Ahhh, but the AL has folks who can swing the bat as well. Guererro might be the best pure hitter in baseball. A-Rod, Giambi, Manny Ramirez. Definitely more hitters in the NL, and my preference has always been NL, but the AL shouldn''t start planning to lose quite yet.
