The Aldmeri hail from Sommerset, as noted, last seen during the 2E.

Summerset Isles. The Shivering Isles is a deadric realm. /pedantry :P

Duh. You're right. That's what I get for trying to show off my Tamriel knowledge.

Well, the Aldmeri Dominion was formed from the Summerset Isles (home of the Altmer/High Elves) and Valenwood (home of the Bosmer/Wood Elves) so the Nords have reason to distrust elves.

Also, Elsweyr (home of the Khajiit) and Black Marsh (home of the Argonians) have both left the Empire. (Elsweyr is a client of the Dominiion). Hammerfell (home of the Redguard) was lost in the war. The Redguards eventually threw the Thalmor out but did not rejoin the Empire; they are now independent.

Lore also says that Morrowind was nearly destroyed by the eruption of Mount Vvardenfell. So there isn't a whole lot of the Empire left.

ETA: Sigh - After looking that up, here's a more complete version - http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:The_...

Edit 2 - Corrected the home of the Altmer; I fail at Tameriel geography.

Dumb question: I have a hard time playing games in first-person--I get video motion sick. How playable is the game in third-person?

I like the 3rd person camera a lot for just wandering around. I haven't tried much combat with it, but I suspect it'd work better with ranged combat then
melee, though you do get much nicer power attack animations. Also sprinting with two melee weapons equipped looks awesome.

I played for a while in 3rd person both with a 360 controller and mouse + keyboard. Both worked pretty well but I did have some issues aiming long ranged spells. In 3rd person they hit lower than where I was aiming but worked fine in 1st person. Some of the animations do look much better in 3rd person and I fine it is easier to time interrupting with my shield bash in 3rd person as well.

Was someone asking about the best way to start with alchemy?

If you choose to go the route of mixing potions free-form to discover effects of ingredients and don't mind a wee bit of cheating, you'll probably find this site useful:

I've really enjoyed the dungeon design so far. Anytime I lure enemies into their own traps I'm a happy dude. I had a great deal of fun with a button for this door, a pressure plate fire trap, and some vampire ne'er-do-wells.

Vampires, always hanging around this place! har har har

IMAGE(http://www.pucemoose.com/pics/levvamp.jpg)

Those giant swinging gate traps (that one shot me) are the best. Everytime I see one (and by that I mean when I walk into it face first) I get all giddy thinking about how many baddies I'm gonna smack up with it.

You know... thinking about it... Considering they've got a wrinkle "mask" for faces.... You wonder how much more effort it would have taken to make one for the body too. You know, for old people.

Not that i really want to see naked old people. Just that, you know, for consistency.

I also just got a letter from "a friend" that references either a) a place i've been to recently but is mispelled and where no one saw me do anything. or b) a place i haven't been to yet but has part of its name as part of the place i had been to.

I'm a bit confused...

There are some really incredible dungeons in this game. The Dwemer ruin underneath Markarth is pretty great, but I think my favourite one so far is Hag's End:

Spoiler:

There's a short preliminary dungeon that exits out onto a big ruined outdoor temple thing high in the mountains and full of Forsworn. After fighting through the outdoor area and up the stairs, you enter an indoor area full of traps, magical wards, witches, and a Hagraven boss who teleports away each time her health starts to get low. After chasing her through the dungeon you find a word wall and a door that leads to an outdoor altar high above the temple stairs, where you have a final showdown with the Hagraven.

The mixture of scenic indoor and outdoor areas, traps, and a recurring boss mob were all fantastic, and as far as I know this is just some random dungeon. The level designers in this game have done some amazing work.

Loved opening cages with vampires in them...and watch them slaughter others, so I didn't have to. Afterwards they left me alone and ran off.

Missed that of the shouts and the levels they have...darn. So thanks for that

And some pics....

The Wabbajack! lol So, will leave it home. With other stuff I am not willing to sell.

Hmm...I guess as a ESDF user I'm screwed when it comes to adding things to my favorite list while in the menu. Tried all the keys and nothing works while I have F bound to Strafe Right.

It's a hack, but how about this?.... Straight-up remap the keys with autohotkey...

skyrim.ahk
-------------------------------------------

#SingleInstance force ;Only allow one instance of this script to be running

;Make ESDFG press WASDF
e::w ;press e, send w (move forward)
s::a ;press s, send a (move left)
d::s ;press d, send s (move left)
f:: d ;press f, send d (move left) <---remove the space before the "d" (used to avoid forum smiley)
g::f ;press g, send f (set favorite)

-------------------------------------------

Actually, it's a bit simpler. The "F" key for favorites is actually "Whatever your Toggle POV" button is (This is what F is bound to by default when not in a menu). So if, in the process of remapping your F button for ESDF movement, you remapped your "Toggle POV" to "ALT", you now use the "ALT" button for favorites, even though the UI still says "F".

Yes, the Skyrim UI designers were bastards.

Figured I'd check in on Deadendthrills blog to see what he's made of Skyrim so far.

...not dissapointed.

[Edit to add: that's exactly where my Wabbajack is stowed, too.]

Haven't got to play as much as I wanted, so I'm still in basic imperial gear, but this is my Dual-Wielding/Destruction Magic using Redguard, Kalam. I'm basing him loosely off the character by the same name in the Malazan Book of the Fallen series, as he and quick Ben are two of my favorite characters - which shows in that his use of destruction magic is totally out of character for Kalam. I have a whole backstory for him and everything. I have to admit, playing a non-white character is out of the norm for me, as I usually like to identify a bit closer with my RPG characters, but I thought I'd try to go out of the norm a bit for this game and so far I'm really enjoying the role playing experience.

That is just...yes. Yes.

pseudoprime1979-

I've been using the 3rd person view almost exclusively. As someone who could not tolerate it in Oblivion and Morrowind, I find it totally workable. Awesome, even.

Ah ha! Now you just need to get some arrows with black fletching to complete the look.

So is it really worth it to get the strategy guide? Just started skyrim and I feel lost.

Buy yourself a Clairvoyance spell. You can get one from the mage in the Jarl's Castle in Whiterun (the second town you go to). It's actually a Novice spell, so most vendors should have it in stock.

Clairvoyance will give you a magic bread-crumb trail to destinations like in Fable. You can either set it to a marker you place or any current Quest that you have toggled on. I found that it makes getting around easier.

Just concentrate on the first few quests you get (either Main story or odd Side quests). Don't worry about hunting down every last quest that pops up. You'll get a bunch of them fast just by talking to people. Simply focus on a few and as you get your feet wet with them, you'll start to get a better handle on the universe and its ways.

Not dumb at all. I have the same problem. Morrowind was unplayable for me because of the motion sickness. Skyrim is actually pretty good about this (at least for me). You can always play in 3rd person except in combat and looking at items on shelves etc.

In other words you'll be pressing the 'F' key to shift in and out of 3rd person. In combat you can usually get away with just using 3rd person (I'm a spellcaster) but the aiming is a little off, so when facing fast moving mobs like dragons, its best to go 1st person. Or another alternative is working towards Master Conjurer and not worry about aiming at all

Interestingly for Skyrim, if I do 1st person too much, I've only gotten a headache, no nausea.

Turning off vsync and mouse smoothing/acceleration pretty much solved my disorientation.

Wow. That explains a great deal -- I'd picked up on the fact that the Empire was in a tenuous position and the Aldmeri Dominion was a significant threat, but hadn't realized just how tenuous and how significant.

And the dragons are coming back, too. I'd thought the tutorial was overdramatic, but the overall situation Tamriel is in is even more so!

So many spoilers. But it's impossible to avoid this thread.

I know someone asked this earlier, I was fighting a big baddie that disarmed me twice. I can't find my weps on the ground anywhere. Anyone have ideas? This was actually

Spoiler:

the main bad guy in the 3 part amulet quest, the one where he turns in to 3 archers, the water area

I don't even own Skyrim, and probably never will... but I saw this in the comments of an amusing Rock Paper Shotgun post and had to share it. I hope this bug never gets patched.

Wow, seeing your screenshots, I wish I could play on Ultra.

Agreed. I am hoping to find a good deal on a new GPU in the next few weeks.

The Portal 2 SPAAAAAAAAAAAAACE makes that glitch.

Now I want a mod that plays space sphere sounds whenever that happens.

Rezzy wrote:

Hmm... I never considered lore/history to be spoilers. It's not stuff that happens in the game (as in "this happens in this quest" or "help this person and they'll give you that"), just something you find by reading books and the like, but I'm willing to be corrected if people do consider that spoilery. Should I go back and spoiler that out?

Wow I am such an idiot...I trial and errored my way through at least four of those 'claw door' puzzles and only now realised...

Spoiler:

that the answer is actually ON the claws themselves when viewed in the inventory

The wall art leading to the first one is also very cool.
