The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Catch-All

I've got a ATI HD5770 and had 2x crash to desktops already which is a worry given I'm not out of the tutorial/escape sequence yet.

To be fair I haven't got the absolute latest drivers (31 october) installed so I'm doing that now. Will keep you posted.

Balls. That's the card I have.

EDIT: Crashing aside, how's the game running? And what are the other details of your rig?

Patiently waiting for 5760x1080 ultra SLI goodness....

I've put in a couple of hours.

I did have one crash in the tutorial area after about 5 minutes of play, which worried me, but then I got out into the world proper and haven't crashed since. And it's running fine on my system which is moderately old at this stage.

And now I'm at work wishing I was home playing Skyrim.

Was the UI an issue like someone linked up above?

I'm running it on an I5-2500K, 8Gb RAM, Win 7/64 at 1680x1050

Seemed to do a good job of picking up my system level and setting everything up appropriately. Everything tuns fine until it crashes, looks nice and perfectly smooth.

Plenty of sliders which I haven't bothered with yet, waiting till I get 'outside' to play with those. Looked to be a similar amount to Oblivion from memory so plenty of tweaking there if required.

Not thrilled with the UI, seems a bit clunky (I thought Oblivions was clunky too, seems to be a similar but different kinda clunkiness if that makes any sense whatsoever!) but very early days and only just starting to suss the shortcuts and such out

It feels a little clunky. It took me a while to work out how the Favourites mechanic works, which is basically the new way you assign weapons and spells to quickly switch to. I kinda wish they'd still left in the 1-8 hotkeys as well, I don't like having to go to a menu, however unobtrusive, to switch out my weapon.

It also has the same problem that Fallout 3 had for us ESDF users, it doesn't change the labels in the inventory/looting menu, so while it says "E" to pick something up, I actually have to hit "W". What is weird is they've got the right buttons in the tutorial pop-ups and the help screens, so I'm not sure why that doesn't translate across to the inventory screen.

The new skill screen is pretty, but sometimes I wish I could just quickly get into a menu, Morrowind style, and have a quick glance at my skills.

Having said all that, I was just about bouncing in my seat playing this last night, UI issues are par for the course with Elder Scrolls games, and I'm sure there'll be some mods fixing that up before long. The core game is still excellent, at least the 2 hours of it I've played so far.

Tweaking the ini files. FOV is set at 60 (!?!?) out of the box so you will want to change it.

Yeah, see that's where my biggest concern is. My aging Mac Pro meets the recommended requirements except in the processor department, having two 2.66 GHz (5150) dual-core Xeon processors. I've got plenty of RAM and the modest but respectable 5770, but the CPU is severely old in the tooth at this point. I was able to run Witcher 2 with a mix of "high" and "ultra" settings at 30 or so FPS at 1680x1050, but I expect that Skyrim will be significantly more processor intensive than Witcher was.

Well, I guess I'll see tomorrow one way or the other.

Crap! You installed the latest drivers?

Yer. Theres a sound setting fix I seen bandied around, might look into that.

I'm assuming/hoping that like Fallout 3 and NV, if you plug in an Xbox controller you basically get the Xbox interface. Being by and large one of those "console philistines" I actually prefer dual sticks for first person controls and hot keys for inventory management would have been the only real benefit the keyboard offered me, so I'm just going to happily play the game that way.

I know it might feel like sacrilege to many PC gamers, but you might find that by doing the same you will be able to avoid UI frustration until modders have a chance to fix things for you.

Will update on crashing seen as of this evening post-unlock; I'm running the following:

Phenom II X6 1090T, 3.5GHz
8GB RAM
Win7 x64
ATI Radeon 5770, 1024GB VRAM

Since I am sitting in this Georgia hotel room by myself and no work for the next 80+ hours, I think I am going to go to my first midnight launch ever. The shame. I finished Uncharted 3 AND MW3 this week. Both were video game bliss. I was very surprised how much I enjoyed the MW3 SP.

The trade-in netted me Skyrim and the hardcover strategy guide for free. I'm happy with that.

I am!
This will be the first time I have ever done a midnight release, and it's only because I have tomorrow off. I can't frickin' wait.

Despite work, I'm going to the midnight release anyway. Even though I have to work at 7am I hope to get a couple of hours of playtime in before catching a quick nap. This should help me survive my workday before returning home.

I caved. Skyrim incoming. Can't wait.

Seems to have settled a bit since I tried the sound fix (which was actually a fix for crashing at menu, not in game, but I'll have a stab at anything!)

FWIW (possibly already posted or linked to but 83 pages? C'mon I got dragons to kill here!)

Control Panel -> Hardware and Sound -> Sound
Pick your sound device that is set as default, click Properties.
Go to the Advanced tab and make sure the 'Default Format' it is set to 44.1khz 16bit.

Got out to the world finally with no more dramas, hopefully we're gold now.

Me too. Download 44% complete.

I was excited about Deus Ex:HR and Arkham City... but this... this is my bread and butter

Prison is a stress-filled environment. Maybe they were just trying to re-create that? :p

I've actually been watching the Giant Bomb Skyrim 12 hour marathon out of the corner of my eye for the last two hours and really enjoying myself. I can't put my finger on why.

Oh, and the game looks rad.

So realistic!!

Pff. Just venting, beware, hot steam.

I have the retail disk. It won't install because it has not been released yet. Downloading and installing it from steam no problem. Who came up with that insanity? You'd think that having the actual data sitting inside your PC would forgo the need to download it!

What a bloody hassle.

Has anybody activated by a VPN? I have some servers I can connect to in the UK. Just need to get it downloaded first!

Or, I could just wait 5 more hours....

I know there's a bunch of live feeds and stuff out there, but I thought I'd point out that Elder-Geek (a site not many people seem to know) is doing a live stream fundraiser for Child's Play called "Full Hearts Marathon." This is the second year they've done it and this year they're streaming Skyrim.

You can donate now, but the stream doesn't start until 6pm EST. You can find everything you need here

Also, they'll be giving away of raffling off some goodies through the marathon. You can see those here.

So, please stop by, they're a small site that puts out some incredibly good work (especially their video reviews) and I think they deserve more recognition. Also, it's for charity, so you have to show up. :P

I was incorrect. It starts tomorrow at 6pm ET and will be going throughout the weekend.

I'm going to the one down by my house. I already "stopped by" to make sure all was well and "pick up a couple things" and while I was at it made sure I'd paid for everything. I'll head back down there at 10pm, with cookies.

Steam says that I can play it now....
was nice knowing you guys!!!

Might be onto something! Seems fine now, bandits been bashed and robbed, books read and scenery gazing ahoy!

Yep! Mostly so I can drive straight home from work tomorrow instead of having to make the traffic-ingested detour to Gamestop. Actually, the traffic might not be too bad tomorrow considering it's Veteran's Day, but I don't want to risk it.

You too, sir!
My game is also ready to play, therefore farewell fellow Goodjers. It was nice knowing you, too.

Playing with graphics settings...... Sweet spaghetti monster!!
