Damn you, autocorrect?

Just covering all angles

Everything on my laptop is pretty in line with the recommended system requirements except my proc, which is a little light even by minimum system requirement standards, so I'm just going to get it on 360. Figure I'll give it a vanilla playthrough that way, and then in three or four years when I get a new PC / feel like replaying it it'll run smooth as butter even with a million mods and it'll be $7.50 on Steam.

Well, I didn't win the free Skyrim contest from the fallout nexus, so I went ahead and did the $53 & change pre-order from Direct2Drive. It seems to have worked without incident; I cancelled their download and just plugged the product key into steam. It's pre-loading through Steam now.

I read that entire article but found no mention of how the Feather Spell affects the algorithm. Useless!

I tried reading the article, but it nearly made me as blind as a Moth Priest.

And, of course, it leaves out the fact that your pack is boundless as long as you walk instead of racing around at 25 mph (Well, Fallout 3/NV does this; can't remember about Oblivion).

In Oblivion you can't move if you are encumbered. However, this only applies to weight that you are wearing or is in your bags, if you just drop the heavy items and carry them around in your hand you can hoist any weight with ease.

Just like in real life.

To be fair, when you balance out a heavy load on your back with one on the front it's easier to move

I'm just hoping that the Island gets its copies of Skyrim (unlike what happened with Rage).... otherwise i'll have taken two days off for nothing!!

Got an SMS from EB Games telling me I can pick up my pre-order copy, so I guess they're selling 'em early. I suppose that's the one downside of Steamworks integration, I'm going to take it home tonight, try to install it, and Steam is going to waggle it's finger at me and say "Nuh-uh!".

Ok I read that article and the link about the Radiant AI & Storytelling and it's what pushed me over the edge about Skyrim.

Let me just state for the record that I'm not a fan of Bethesda. I actually own Daggerfall, Morrowind and Oblivion and dis-liked all of them. They just never clicked for me, especially the lore. I just kept buying them because of the Promise. The promise that it could one day be what they always say it can be.

I believed that Skyrim would be just more of the same. While I liked Fallout 3, I still can't give Bethesda the benefit of the doubt to put down money on their latest magus opus. Besides I have Saint's Row 3 and Batman:AC on my plate this month.

But the more I hear, not of the story of the game but instead the stories that can arise from just willing to experience the environment they have crafted, the more I'm willing to give it a try once again.

Innovation, giving the player choices and letting them craft for themselves unique stories get me anytime over graphics or complicated lore.

I'm with ya, Falchion. I liked Morrowind more than Oblivion, but mostly because I spent most of my time in Morrowind watching a friend play. Oblivion just never clicked. It was fun to roam around, but I just didn't find the world all that interesting unless I was murdering peeps.

Fallout 3, however, I like. It's just the setting would get so dreary.

Take some Elder Scrolls, mix in some Fallout 3, and we get Skyrim, or so I gather. I hope it's a better fit because I too keep believing in the Promise.

:-O

I have a test tomorrow, and this is one of the topics on it. I can tell you that in the time it takes you to figure out the optimal (most profitable) subset of loot to bring home, you can probably have made multiple trips. But most of you will probably make use of the almost-as-good heuristic of sorting by profit density and taking the most profitable ones until you fill your pack.

I had a brief thought to grab Skyrim as a post-test reward, since I won't have another test or project due until mid december. Maybe this is a sign.

I have to admit that the Radiant stuff fills me with equal parts hope and horror.

New, updated Radiant AI: You won't find townspeople loitering aimlessly in town squares anymore. Each citizen performs tasks that make sense in their environment. To impart the towns and cities with a greater sense of life, Bethesda has populated them with mills, farms, and mines that give the NPCs believable tasks to occupy their day.

Hope. People with lives, people with agendas that *don't* revolve around me. I don't want to be the center of the universe! I want the universe to be uncaring, and I have to scrape my way through it with sweat and blood, not because the universe adjusted itself to accommodated me.

The game will look at the nearby dungeons you've explored, automatically set the mission in a place you've never visited, and designate opponents that are appropriately matched to your strengths and weaknesses." - Raphier

Horror. That sounds *awfully* like the 'scale sh*t to player level' nonsense that made vanilla Oblivion a real disappointment to me. I don't want the cougars to suddenly turn into bobcats just because I'm level six instead of level nine. I want to be ripped apart, limb from bloody limb, until I think 'Hey, dangerous things live here. Maybe I should return here when I'm a bit smarter/stronger.

They've mentioned repeatedly that the enemy scaling is supposed to work more like Fallout 3 and less like Oblivion, so hopefully this won't be the case.

Phew! Made my goal of finishing DA2 before Skyrim came out. I hate leaving games hanging.
23 hours to go, people!

For anybody that's awake/Australian, Giantbomb is doing a pre-Skyrim stream stream at midnight pacific where Dave Snider will be playing either Morrowind or Oblivion.

Already got it queued up! I'm off tomorrow thank goodness. I hope it's Morrowind.

Yeah I know. That would explain my MMO habit too.

I wonder if I can trick Steam into thinking I'm in New Zealand... or 3 metres west of the international date line.

Wait, really?! I wonder if that means HK will release at the same time... I had better tell my girlfriend that Operation Adult Diaper starts early...

Edit: Damn, 1 day and 7 hours for me. Oh well. It's for the best I think.

Except it will unlock when it is the designated time on hte Steam server, so you'll have to wait even longer!

Spoiler:

Not being bitter about holding off on buying this

OK need some advice; im totally sold on this bad boy now.

Problem I have with all games is an overwhelming OCD urge to exclore everything and collect everything and go everywhere - for example in deus ex HR once finding my way into an area I have to go back out and find all the other ways in too; i.e. the airducts, the hacking route, the stealth the guards route, the conversation route etc. etc.

Problem I have found in the past with Fallout 3 and oblivion when i tried to play them is that there was simply so much to do I became overwhelmed! I spent ages in Oblivion the first castle bit exploring every nook and cranny and visiting every merchant making a list of the things I wanted to buy but could yet afford, speaking to every NPC etc., then I went outside and just didn't know where to start, I always felt like I was missing something or not exploring thoroughly enough.

How can I conquer these OCD urges and just allow myself to become part of the Skyrim world? How do you guys approach play?

I generally leave the main story quest things until last and always focus on side missions / exploring. The problem with games like oblivion is that because there are so many side quests and so much exploring to do I would never advance the main quest.

Yeah I'm seeing the same time as for HK over here in SG.
Redwing, where did you get your Temporal Displacer Device? And please don't tell me it came with the collectors edition.

I finally pulled the trigger on this. I guess, in a way, it's good that I have lower expectations of Bethesda and am going in cold having not spent much time nor actively remember much of the previous Elder Scrolls games.

Wow, really? I'm not sure, all I know is my Steam is saying that Skyrim unlocks in... well 4 hours now. I hope it's not lying, might get a bit of play in before bed tonight if that's the case.

Well hello Mr Postman, what's that package you have for me ?

Let's see if I can get in there and nick everything before the pesky US GWJ'ers get here, even though that won't stop them claiming to have 'discovered' it

11 hours remaining according to my Steam.

Just got home from a Cold Chisel concert (aussies would understand)

It's unlocking! But too tired to play

Just.......going to have a peek before bed. Famous last words?

Yep, looks like us Aussies do get it early, mine is allowing me to install from the DVD now. I wish I didn't have to work tomorrow.
