Did your pile become less of a mountain? - 2011 in review

Google Doc, did it work, can we make it better?

I honestly never used it. at. all.

Fine tuning our commitment and addendum into a Pile Charter?

I like this idea and I think a small round-table would be great in deciding what the final Pile Declaration of Independence will turn out to be.

I just (finally) signed up for backloggery. What are "Null" and "Mastered"?

I'd be good with Backloggery + thread for support.

Null removes the game from the statistics. I use it for open-ended games which really don't have an end goal (ie. most of Maxis' catalog).

Mastered is a special designation for challenge runs of a game. Basically anything that goes above and beyond the 100% completion goal.

I use "Null" for games that I haven't started, keeps them out of my stats.

I use "Mastered" for games that I have either beaten multiple times or feel like a king at, your choice - just be honest.

I use Null for puzzle games that don't end, like Hexic HD or Bust-a-Move, and for mini-game collections, like Wii Sports Resort or Wii Fit. Basically anything that can't ever be beaten.

I haven't used Mastered for anything at this point, but I could see it for speed runs of games like Metroid Prime. I honestly doubt I'll ever use it.

Friend me up, Minarchist (and everyone else).

Did they remove the medals and "Pro" status from Wii Sports Resort? That was my metric for Wii Sports / Wii Play although I highly doubt I'll ever have enough desire to return to those games for an extended period of time.

They still have medals and the Pro status, but I'd use obtaining those as a metric for the game being marked as complete as opposed to beaten.

Ooo good point.

For the new thread, I'd like to see a roll call in the original post of everyone's Backloggery pages. That'd make it easier to add everyone to your multitap.

Sounds like we're all pretty clear in the direction we want to go, and the offer still stands that if anyone in the group wants a 'rough dump' of your titles entered into Backloggery, I am more than happy to do so. I dropped Sally's list in as a test to see how I went for time, and the way the tabbing and entry fields are setup you can easily do an entry every 5 seconds.

I can drop in title, and platform, then you can just go in and add the completion % details/no cheevs, trophies, etc that you see fit to add. Will more than half the time you need to set up if time (not space) is an issue.

I went through my game cabinet today and made a list of all the games i have - will update soon!

I support the proposed move to Backloggery, I will work to update my games list into it and it will force me to re-visit my Games Collection Excel spreadsheet and update it and hopefully work to disable me on any big impulse purchases.

I overall was mildly successful in attacking my pile, but life seemed to get in the way and didn't help contribute to my discipline. I also am pretty sure I violated the Pile Charter a few times. I am really grateful for the support I've received through this thread and hope to re-focus and hopefully be able to support others in 2012.

As you all are adding yourselves to Backloggery, I suggest making sure to add all your games, even the ones that you've already finished. I found my Backloggery account to be a little discouraging, at first, because I only posted the games I had unfinished. It made me feel like I had this huge mountain of stuff that I was never going to get through. However, when I went through and added in all the games that are part of my collection, even ones I finished off a long time ago, it put my pile in perspective. I've actually beaten the majority of the games I own (62% as of today), and that was a good thing to be reminded of. Granted, I still have 35 (!) unfinished games across 10 (!) platforms, but that pile seems smaller when stacked up against my 57 beaten/completed games.

Question - does backloggery scan your achievements for you or do you have to manually do that?

Manually, so far as I know.

Yes, Manuel is your only option.

Manuel is always a sassy option.

The only thing I don't like about Backloggery is the weird lag between when you update a game's listing and when you can see that update. Your stats are always up to date, but things like a deleted game will still show up in your list for awhile.

Manuel lets you do it any way you want it.

Also, for anyone looking at a big stack of games finished and unfinished, just remember, Au_tbird put in 1000+ games. I've done ~400 myself, and I know others around here have more. I actually try to keep myself below certain % unfinished. I used to be able to maintain 15%, but after building a new computer 2 yrs ago and all the steam sales / goozex, under 20% is all I can manage, but I was up at 24% or so at one point this year.

I need to jump back into this thread.

Moving put me in a weird mood for video games. I set up my PC right away but haven't played much there, and I only finally set up my TV last night but couldn't be arsed to do anything more than download some demos. I'll probably jump into some consoley goodness this weekend though.

Sally, you up for finishing up the achievements in Red Faction Armageddon (or helping me get them, if you already did)?

Just purchased Skyrim - sigh

Sorry buddy, I sold the game:(

I am down to boost something with you, though! Get your mind back into the cheev!

Y'know what? I hate Bethesda games, but for some reason, I might go out and buy Skyrim anyway.

I don't know why. It's gonna be lame and buggy as Hell, and I'll be getting Super Mario 3D Land and Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary this weekend, and I still gotta play through long ass games like Fallout: New Vegas and Dragon Age 2.

But it's a fantasy game with dragons in it, dammit.

Maybe I should find some reviews (not that it'll help much, since everyone just loves Bethesda no matter how many repetitive dungeons and atrocious enemy A.I. they run into).

I contemplated buying Skyrim, but then remembered the things about Morrowind and Oblivion that put me off. I figure I can spend less on it later. If I had friends discussing it, though, I'd probably be a dead man...

For next year, I'll likely be adding a re-play an older game set of goals for myself. I have this huge library of games, many of which I've thought about replaying many times. I need to do something about that, and stop jumping from one game to the next as soon as I see the credits roll constantly.

I'm thinking 1 replayed game for every 3, or once every 2 months for a small game. I don't know, but I wanna revisit some games. Anyone else feel similarly?

You're not alone. I'm feeling oddly nostalgic for Earthbound or Final Fantasy VII lately.

I've actually been wanting to do a big Farewell to the Wii tour since it's replacement is rolling out next year. Play through some of the great games I already have and buy some of the ones I don't. Unfortunately, that idea is completely at odds with my primary goal for the new year of clearing out as much of the backlog as I can.

Similarly, I've been itching to get some 360 games I already beat to finish getting all the achievements. That's also at odds with clearing the pile, but I think I can wait on that until further down the line.

Yes.

Sounds like we need to work in a "buried treasures" section to our pile work for 2012 (end of the world permitting of course).

No worries. I'll have to take a look at what else needs boosting. I know I still need to go through the last few DLC packs for Borderlands if you have that.
