Advise me: New Receiver (A/V)

Those who continue to instigate this orgy of filthy enablement must be stopped and brough to justice. On an impulse, yesterday after work I stopped by a BestBuy nearby my office, and picker up Denon 1912 which they had in stock just for me. At $549, it better not disappoint.

Well, I have an older 2909 and a 3808, and they are really superb, so I think you'll probably like it a lot.

I love the 1912, but it has the same problem posted up-thread:

One more caveat with the 1712 I just discovered: You can't use HDMI inputs as video sources. Meaning if you want to listen to your CD source and just have your TV playing from a STB, you can't if the STB is connected via HDMI. This also was discovered while I was trying to figure out the best way to get analog audio from my 360 for Rocksmith.

So - if I want to listen to a podcast via Airplay streaming while I'm playing a game, I can do so with the XBox since I have one of the early Pro models that only has component video. If I want to do the same thing while playing the PS3, I have to pipe the music through something that's plugged into the component ports that I have configured to match the HDMI port that the PS3 is connected to. It sounds more complicated than it really is.

Right. Luckily, I don't anticipate this use case, although who knows.

I hooked up the 1912 yesterday and configured inputs and buttons. Have yet to run the Audissey adjustments, try network radio, or DLNA streaming, but at least Xbox 360 now works as it should.

Did that fix your DVR issue too?

Yes, it did! Could be due to a firmware update which the box offered to download and I obliged.

Pioneer VSX-1020 is on sale today from Amazon, $300. I have no idea if it's good or not, but Amazon pimped it pretty hard in the email.

I was just about to ask about that one. Reviews @ amazon are all over the place, but avg 4 stars.

Historically, regular Pioneer receivers have been considered kinda meh, where the Pioneer Elites are usually very good.

So a 300$ yamaha is probably better than a on-sale for that pioneer?

I don't know for sure... I'm not that up to date on current receivers. You might want to check over on avsforum.

I got to use my Denon 1912 a bit -- played MW3 and listened to some internet radio and Pandora music. Everything is good so far. Minor nags -- for such a "gaming-aware" product, not having an XBox 360 remote support is kind of strange.
