Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception Catch-All

Wow, this game is solidly on page 2? On release day? I once thought about creating a metric to describe good games based on number of GWJ posts and retention of the high frequency of posts. Obviously, this would be an outlier. Or, maybe Uncharted will sink between BF3 and Skyrim? Say it isn't so!

It's such a single player, story-driven thing, not feeling a lot of need to talk about anything just yet. Gameplay is pretty much the same so far so ... *shrug*

I would guess some people are going to stay away until they finish the game to avoid spoilers.

I put an hour and a half in today even though I should have been working. Shockingly, it's an Uncharted game. I'm glad I'm playing on easy because the bad guys seem more bullet spongey than I remember. It usually takes me awhile to get used to console aiming so that makes the problem even worse because I can't reliably shoot somebody in the head.

One early section in particular got me really frustrated (I'll put the section in spoiler tags).

Spoiler:

The part of the young Nathan Drake section where you're running away across the rooftops.

The pathing at some points wasn't very intuitive so I ran into a couple dead ends. And, there were a couple of times where I pulled an Assassin's Creed on a jump and Drake went flying in the completely wrong direction to his death.

I'll be interested in playing the coop missions when I'm done with the story. Feel free to add me on PSN. Currently, Stele is the only person on my PSN friends list.

What more do you need?

Loving it so far. Agree with the above comments about tough enemies. Playing on Normal myself and have had a couple of times where I nearly ran out of ammo. Not looking forward to the Crushing run after this...

There's also something about single player vs multiplayer games usually.

Yup. U3 is a game I'm eagerly looking forward to playing. However SP games are the "dessert" titles that I sprinkle in as needed (and when on sale). I think there are more than a few of us that focus more on MP titles on release days. During this time of year there's plenty of gaming to go around so some concessions have to be made.

I've found, at least so far, dudes drop faster than previously, but they're also much more mobile.

Also, I've been too enthralled to say much.

Finished the game. Just like the others, I enjoyed it from beginning to end. I would go so far as to say I enjoyed this game a whole lot more than I did the latest Batman. Took me about 10 1/2 hours to complete. Enjoy all!

I thought I was going to break my controller at that point. I'm already so sick of the fail state music/sounds. Also, aiming is just so hard with the PS3 controller.

This game is reeeeeaallly good.

In other news: I still want very much to go back in time and murder the person responsible for sticking with the dualshock on the PS3. I HATE THIS GODDAMN CONTROLLER.

Sorry. I feel much better now.

Interesting. Since it seems to have several forced melee sections, where the game plays very much like Batman. But the controls and timing for those parts seem way looser than Batman, on timing counters and other stuff. In some of those sections, with a big group of bad guys, I find myself wishing I had Batman AA's precision. (Haven't got AC yet)

That was also a bit frustrating for me, but in retrospect there's only a couple of areas where it's not telegraphed well. Most of the time there's usually something that comes up as a possible path, and it's usually the correct choice. Having the guy right on your tail really made it feel desperate and seat of the pants.

Playing on hard, and the enemies do soak up some bullets before going down. I'm finding they do a better job of trying to flank and come from behind.

Otherwise its not too much different from 2, just a great polished game.

ugh..sounds like I will get about 25% in and give up...just like the first two

I know a while back I was eyeballing that Razer gamepad but there was no release date for it at the time. Does it actually exist for regular consumers yet? The Onza, I think? I need to look into that again I guess.

I gave up on Dead Space 2 and am already getting frustrated with U3 purely because of the controller.

With criticism like "the weakest Uncharted of them all" I'm not that worried. Any other videogame that put "almost as good as the weakest Uncharted game" on its cover as a review pull quote would still get my dollar.

Sure, ti's not controlling quite as precisely as I'd like, but about two hours and several chapters in I've found it-- like its predecessors-- to be pure, highly concentrated fun. But I'll admit that I often play video games to be a tourist in an interesting virtual world and to hang out with character I like. In that respect, it's first-rate.

I also have no problem with dropping down to Easy or Very Easy if it gets too tough. Normal has been fine so far, though. My AI buddies are picking up my slack.

The Onza is for 360/PC. Looks like this is about the only option unless one of our UK Goodjers would export some Gioteck HF-1s.

I have the Onza.. if they did make it for PS3 even wired it would be the best controller for the PS3.. that being said its not that great compared to the standard 360 controller. The triggers are weird and not as comfortable to use. But I would love Razer to pieces if they did make it...I guess this late in the cycle lets just hope that Sony ditches this design for something better for the PS4

I got that controller.. its passable.. but only by a bit.. and its flaky as hell trying to get it to work reliably... half the time the game refuses to recognize that its plugged in and the controller of choice

Bah, that's about what I expected. Thanks for saving me the hassle of reading up on it. Guess I'll bear with the tired Dual Shock for the handful of PS3 exclusives I want to play.

f*ck.

The full review

I actually think his points sound extremely legitimate (I often do, though), the main issue for me is that many people (including myself) find the game extremely fun despite those issues. The real reason I'm posting this link though is to point out the hilariousness of the comments. Especially the one that says " "honest" gamers? honest my a**! this review is a shame..." Quality post.

Hah, there is someone complaining about it lowering the metacritic score!

Ultimately, your right, it comes down to whether you have fun playing it. It sounds like he just doesn't like this type of game.

I bought the first two but I think I am going to rent this one. Although he is a bit harsh, his point about being driven down a path with no real exploration is what always bothered me. It also makes me curious about how the next Tomb Raider game is going to play out.

Chick isnt doing anything new here.. he always annoys the uber fans of any game.. especially since the more popular the game the more likely he will express contrary opinions about it.

Though he tends to express his displeasure in a good way that you can at least see where he is coming from... which is the biggest challenge and he usually nails that.

Exactly. I didn't post it because I thought it was shocking, I genuinely like reading what he has to say, regardless of whether I agree or not.

See, to me his reviews always come off... wrong. He might as well be Jim Sterling as far as I'm concerned.

I read this one, because people linked it in here and I guess I like torturing myself.

Biggest lol I got from the review:

There are perhaps three sequences where the climbing also involves shooting, with the camera swinging down below Drake to look up at enemies shooting down at him. It's exactly like Dark Void, which you didn't play because it wasn't the third in a popular series.

No Tom, you're wrong, as usual. We didn't play Dark Void because there was a demo before release. And the demo was a pile of crap. We don't typically pay $60 for piles of crap.

But I digress.

Uncharted 3: still awesome the further I get into it.

PS3 controller: Yep. Still awful today too.

Yeah, I'll give you that. That line came off extremely arrogant and off-putting.

Just picked up U3 today. Not sure when I'll start it but I'm excited.

So I got my grubby hands on it today and it is "just more Uncharted 2" which is JUST FINE in my book. Only nit I could pick is Elena hasn't shown up yet, but I guess that's because I'm not far in.

Yeah just keep playing...

I finished this in two sittings, which is much faster than I beat Uncharted 2. I think the only thing missing in this game is the "newness" factor. It's a really close call which is a better game. I have so much respect for Naughty Dog. As far as issues, I hit two bugs but nothing big, and I only encountered the afformentioned difficulties figuring out where I needed to jump once or twice, but I kind of like that it's not clear sometimes. Feeling like I run into a problem and have to look around real fast and make a decision and just go for it feels just as cinematic to me as the other stuff. With the difficulty level, at one point I felt like switching to hard because I didn't feel in danger for the first half of the game, and then all of a sudden the difficulty ramped up severely and everything felt a lot more tense.

Also:

Spoiler:

Holy crap, the shipyard/cruise ship level. Holy.Crap.

Thin_J wrote:

I can't comment on Uncharted 3 yet because the wife gave it out as a Christmas idea for me to a family member without talking to me first. On the one hand I applaud that she actually remembered the name of a game series that I like without any prompting from me. On the other hand, no Uncharted until after Christmas for me

On the PS3 controller front, not only is the PS3 controller still awful, in my experience it gets much worse with age. I have two PS3s and four controllers. They are generally only "good" for about a year or 2 of use before the sticks develop so much extra play that they become almost useless for fine movements such as aiming. I did not have this problem with my PSX controllers and didn't really use my PS2 as much so I'm not sure what has mechanically changed. On the bright side, the "loose" older controllers still work fine for my children to play LEGO games, etc. so I've assigned them each their own personal controller to keep them from wearing out mine.

So...

Is anyone interested in Multiplayer at all? I'm planning to jump online this weekend to play a few matches. I want to get into it while everyone is still new to the experience.

I'm going to give it a shot this weekend, I think. I'm not a big multiplayer person though, so I doubt it will last past this weekend.

If by "everyone is still new to the experience" you mean, "I still have a chance of not getting pwned by the hardcore people who have put more hours into it than I possibly could", good luck. There was an open beta for the multi and some folks put a lot of time into that and they'll probably still be around and kicking yer butt now that the game proper is out.

edit: I plan to run through all the coop adventure mode stuff once I'm done with SP. Probably dip my toes in the horde mode thingy, but I know from the MP open beta that competitive multi isn't for me.
