Space Sims/Strategy Games Catch-All

I think you may be confusing it with Sins of a Solar Empire. Sins is an RTS set in space. A good game and it too is a space 4x game, just in real time so it is less deep and more clicky.
Sword of the Stars and Sword 2 are more traditional turn-based space 4x games in the spirit of Master of Orion. when Sword came out, it was not very deep but became so with numerous expansions. Sword 2 promises to be even deeper. The battles in Sword (and presumably in Sword 2) are real-time tactical. One of the cool things in Sword is that, the better your tech, the more you could control your ships in battle.

Waiting for it to unlock. Looks like we might get some snow. Yardwork is right out.

SPAZ is on sale on Steam today.

Looks like there is also some kind of Halloween update for it. Steam updated and when you start SPAZ up, the Mod list is set to Halloween. No word on what the content is yet.

EDIT: Here are the Halloween additions:

Added – Spooky front end music
Added – Themed Radio chatter
Added – Trick or Treat mechanic based on size and type of station
Added – Base defense spinner weapons (will import to main game)
Added – Critter Storm on Trick or Treat Fail
Added – Experimental weapons test (spinners) on Trick or Treat fail
Added – Pumpkins (Asteroids), Flaming Poop (Artifacts), Candy (Rez)
Added – Ghosty explosions
Added – Spectral faces in nebula weather
Added – Costumes for Don, Carl, Elsa
Added – Webbed up Motherships
Added – Mining asteroid to pumpkin patch abomination.

I'm stoked for your impressions, tboon. Frankly, I'm stoked for the game, but went the shooter route this fall, so I'm all out of money for the time being.

Woot.

I just totally spooged.

Also, I just wrote an article about the old iMUSE music system, thinking it's one reason why many missions from X-Wing and TIE Fighter stick in the brain more than other space games:

Enjoy!

Uh gross?

Seriously. He doesn't even have a bestickered Canadian-made "sneeze" shield!

If you don't have a sneeze shield for your monitor you gotta sit perpendicular to it when you "sneeze".

For some as yet undetermined reason, I've decided to pick up SotS II. Really looking forward to playing tonight (and hopefully this weekend).

You're thinking Sins of a Solar Empire most likely, which was the RTS with 4X elements tacked on. Sword of the Stars II is a much more traditional 4X game.

Only if I did it in your eye, baby. :*

Right? I imagine the book, "Fires on RT48V12W" is full of sultry lust and intrigue.

If it doesn't have pulsating, glistening ovipositors, I don't want to hear about it.

It has writhing and sparkling miltiovipositors, if that helps.

I'll be in my bunk.

I'd never heard of Space I before, but it sounds like a computer adaptation of Traveller -- the character statistics, services to enlist in, possibility of death in character creation, and mentioned skills are all straight out of the pen and paper game.

(Which you can buy in PDF-on-CD-ROM format from Far Future Enterprises, if you're sufficiently curious. The "Classic Traveller" disc contains the rules in question, plus lots of other, related vintage gaming stuff.)

From what's been shown so far, that's *definitely* a Traveller ripoff. Which is pretty interesting given that Traveller was only published in 1977. It was insanely popular, however.

You know, I never played Traveller much, because I was the only true SF geek in my main circle of friends, but I got a lot of hours out of the books. I've never run into another game that was as much fun to just read about.

Yeah, Space I's Mobygames page said it was also a Traveller rip-off of sorts. It's certainly making me look forward to trying the Megatraveller games, which I never played back in the day.

My story of Space I continues as we explore the untamed wastes of RT48V12W...

RT48V12W?

God-damn. That sounds like a place to be.

Hey guys, if y'all haven't played the fun tactical space RPG thingy that is Star Wolves, GoG has it for $4 today!

Looks decent. Not sure I can justify another game on the pile, but it IS awfully cheap...

Hey y'all, just pimping my latest article, a final look at the 1978 game, Space I:

Hey y'all, this likely doesn't apply to y'all, but if you or someone you know is interested in space games, but not sure which games to start with, I've written an article that will hopefully help:

Nice write-up!

Some reviews of an XBLA game called "Fusion: Genesis"

http://n4g.com/news/883897/fusion-ge...

It's a twin-stick shooter set in space with some RPG elements, lots of missions for factions and 4 player co-op. It's not the full Elite/Privateer experience, but has some elements. I'm going to try out the demo tonight if I get a chance.

It's getting a lot of positive talk over at Qt3, with the caveat that there's a lot to learn that the game doesn't really tell you about. To me, it looks very Armada-ish.

Speaking of Space I, I just discovered this blog post telling the story behind it.

The blog that's from, The Digital Antiquarian, has a lot of interesting stuff about the early days of computer games with a focus on adventure gaming.
