Politics and Controversy

Before we get started on the rules I want to make one thing very clear. This is the least visited area of the forums and the most work to moderate, if people can't be civil they will be removed. If things get out of hand we'll just lock the section up. Gamerswithjobs.com is a hobby that Elysium and I pursue in our spare time for fun and we don't consider separating squabbling children a very enjoyable experience.

Sugar tax

Sugar tax needed, say US experts

Might be interesting to see where they draw the line on what is or isn't sugar. As an example taxing the population to subsidize corn to make foods "cheaper" thanks to HFCS and then taxing them for eating those foods would be pretty strange, though certainly not surprising.

In the meantime if the tax is too steep it may just cause some sort of underground sugar market as we've seen in Canada with smokes from time to time.

A conversation on twitter inspired this post.

Jessica Chobat was recently featured in a video on voice actors in Mass Effect 3. Some of the twitter conversation began to turn to why Ms. Chobat was in this role, and whether she had earned it, or merely received it as a result of her beauty. This led me to think about whether being attractive tends to trigger negative reactions in male-dominated pursuits, like gaming, or comedy. I honestly don't follow Ms.

The Al-Ahly soccer club is a dominant force in Egyptian soccer. Today, they lost 3-1 to Al-Masry, in a major upset.

To protest a bill that would require women to undergo an ultrasound before having an abortion, Virginia State Sen. Janet Howell (D-Fairfax) on Monday attached an amendment that would require men to have a rectal exam and a cardiac stress test before obtaining a prescription for erectile dysfunction medication.

I saw this article and laughed a little bit.

Based on the discussion starting over here:

There's a lot of disagreement over whether it is socially acceptable, ethical, or effective to use the power of ownership to eject a customer from your establishment as an act of protest.

The article that triggered the discussion is:

My take is that it's a complex issue which could do with much discussion; I tend to fall on the side of the storeowner, but it's hard for me to gauge how much of that is sch

I just got the following.

[quote]Hello from Amazon.com,

As you may or may not be aware Amazon.com LLC is not required to collect sales or use taxes in all states, including the state of South Carolina.

The South Carolina Department of Revenue requires us to provide the following notice to you:

You may owe South Carolina use tax on purchases you made from Amazon.com LLC during the previous calendar year. The amount of tax you may owe is based on the total sales price of the items you purchased during the previous calendar year.

I saw this posted on Twitter and wasn't at all surprised by what I read.

I've never really liked Apple, but this article certainly proved my point about the techno giant.

There have been a number of academic studies investigating two main aspects of the fiscal benefits of legal pot: the tax revenues gained, and the money saved from police, courts and corrections not having to deal with marijuana violators anymore.
