Games and Platforms

If there is one universal truth to this outline it is that we retain the right to change these rules at any time. These are guidelines of what we generally expect, and simply because we haven't explicitly stated here that you can't do X doesn't mean you, by default, can. Generally I don't like Codes of Conduct because it implies that the forum members don't know the appropriate way to act in a public forum. My feeling has always been that if you need these rules to know how to act, then you're probably not going to be here long.

Steam Community

It's live - I've taken the liberty of creating a GWJ group. Here's the link:
http://steamcommunity.com/groups/GWJ

But I kind of effed up. When you initially create a group, you have the choice to make it private or public. I left it private, thinking I could change it later. So far, there doesn't seem to be a way to do it.

So, until I get that figured out, link to your Steam ID here and I'll get you added to the group.

GWJ Ventrilo Server FAQ

Ventrilo can be downloaded at The Ventrilo download page.

Quote:

1) Start the ventrilo program. Click on the Start button, click on Programs and then click on Ventrilo. This will display another menu option called Ventrilo that will start the actual program.

2) Click on the "->" button that is next to the first pulldown window called "User Name". This will open a new window where you can create a logon name to be used when connecting to a server.

3) Click the "New" button. This will open a small window where you can enter your logon name. The name you enter is entirely up to you. It can be your real name or a nick name, but preferably your GWJ Forum name .

We have a great many different ways to communicate and play games together these days and I thought it was about time we made a sticky to keep it all together.

"there stuff rox"

Several years ago (2004 or thereabouts), after reading one too many idiotic forum posts (not here, of course) and/or "customer reviews" on EB, I channeled an alter ego, Aaron Sopwatch, and together with his friend Jace, they created this page. Aaron and Jace got distracted and their site languished. Plus, Aaron's mom had to return her computer to Rent-a-Center.

LucasArts to kick-it old school again

We just don't know how or what.

My money's on either a new Maniac Mansion or something in the X-Wing/TIE Fighter genre.

Infamous vs. Prototype: The Final Showdown

In Yahtzee's review of Prototype he made a challenge to both Sucker Punch and Radical to send him pictures of the opposing games character in a bra and panties to ultimately decide which game was better. To his surprise, this call to arms was answered. One game won, but the entire internet loses.

You Had Me At...

Here's the premise: we've all had dozens--hundreds!--of moments when games hooked us, surprised us, got us to go all in. (there have been an equal number, or more, moments when we said "you lost me at..." but that's another topic). Pick one and play along.

Dear X-Men Origins: Wolverine,

You had me at the moment near the start of the game when I leaped onto the helicopter in mid-air, tore a hole in the cockpit, pulled out the pilot, and held his head into the rotor blade. Awesome.

Your pal,
Tritone

How do you define "polish"?

...and no, I don't mean "from Poland".

"Polish" is a term we use all the time to describe games. A simple forum search will show the word occurring in many threads.

But what does it mean?

Not just another "too many games" rant

I was struck by a comment Chris Remo made on the recent Conference Call, to the effect that when he started in the hobby, he was more-or-less blissfully unaware of all the games that were available, but now thanks to the internet constantly feeding him new information, he feels pressured to play (and usually abandon) many more games. When he started, a game like Half Life could easily sit for months in the background of his life.
