Dawn of the Dead Review

Well, dead in the sense that they fell down. Then they got back up. Then they started eating each other. - Steve

Gaald sent in a review of Dawn of the Dead, a remake of the classic George Romero flick from back in the 70's. Can Ving Rhames carry this movie on his manly shoulders? Read on and find out!

Another game franchise is going to make its way into the movie theatres. GamesMarkt notes that Konami has officially announced that a movie based on Silent Hill will be made. While the series is known for its scary and gory atmosphere, the license was not handed over to the infamous Boll KG (Alone in the Dark & House of the Dead movies) this time surprisingly enough. Davis Films Sarl is going to produce the motion picture. It will be directed by Christophe Gans, responsible for movies such as Brotherhood of the Wolves and Crying Freeman. Konami promises cooperation and support for  script, setting, sound and special FX design to make sure that final product is close to the games. Of course, that's what Capcom also said before the Street Fighter movie came out. Apples and oranges, I know. Hopefully.

Firefly Movie Confirmed

Joss Whedon's Firefly TV series was a hot topic back when we first launched GWJ and it looks like the cancelled series isn't done with us yet. The Hollywood Reporter has word that Firefly has been confirmed for a feature film and will start shooting Q1 2004. Joss Whedon himself will be directing the flick (his first time doing a movie) and Mutant Enemy will be producing it. Here's a bit on Firefly's continued popularity despite being canned by Fox:

"Ever since the show went off the air, our fan base has grown even more," Buchanan said. "We've had tremendous outpouring from the U.S. and Canada as well as the U.K., which just finished a run of 'Firefly' over there. Every comic book and sci-fi convention has had a 'Firefly' presence since the show first aired."

For the series, which ran this past season, Whedon produced 15 hours of television, including a two-hour episode. Three shows never aired on Fox but will likely be featured on the series' DVD release, due out in December. Buchanan said fans created such a demand that DVD presales on Amazon.com sold out within 24 hours.

*Insert obligatory "Damn you Fox!" here*

Ze Gamestar crew points out that there is a promotion video of the 'Alone in the Dark' motion picture is available at JoBlo.com. The 11 MB download hints at a standard horror thriller inspired by 'Invasion of the Body Snatchers'. And also shows that the setting obviously isn't related to the games at all. The movie, starring Christian Slater, is being produced by the same company that's also responsible for the 'House of the Dead' flick. Express your excitement now.

A lot of people tell me, on a variety of issues, that I should just 'get over it' (aside wink to certain forum goers).  It's probably good advice that I ignore as if it had been told to me by a telephone solicitor.  So, when your first inclination at my mention of long dead television martyr Firefly is to suggest that I get over it, I happily retort that you should feel free to stick your head in a bucket, preferably one filled with something repulsive and sticky.

For those of you remaining unsoiled, I'm happy to report that Joss Whedon is hard at work making deals and writing a script to bring Firefly to the big screen.  And, surprisingly, it seems that such a deal is not "a crazed pipe dream."  Read on from the scoop from Sci-Fi Wire.

Pirates of the Caribbean

Hoochie and I managed to catch Pirates of the Caribbean on opening night yesterday and IÂ'm really glad we did. The movie was without a doubt my favorite of the summer so far. Great acting, fun story, fantastic action, swords and pirates – what more could you possibly want? Add the fact that Johnny Depp was simply unbelievable as Captain Jack Sparrow and youÂ've got yourself a winner. The effects were really well done and most importantly they didnÂ't distract from the actors or the movie itself which is the most important part of good CGI for me. If you have even a remote interest in this film go see it.

Anyone else get a chance to check it out? What did you think?

Welcome to Friday, I'm heading out of town for the day but I couldn't resist posting the first Return of the King poster before I go. The Lord of the Rings trilogy has been a wild ride and I can't wait for the final part this winter! Let's just hope Peter Jackson doesn't decide to do some lame prequels in 20 years..

Firefly Film?

Fanciful speculation, pipe dream, or a wish answered?  According to Nathan Fillon (Serenity Captain, Mal Reynolds), care of Sci-Fi Wire, there are forces churning behind the veil of Hollywood to try and bring Fox's defunct series to the big screen.  One might ask why a series that fared poorly on television would even be considered for a trip to the silver screen, and, I think, that's probably a pretty good question but it's happened before in a different age under different circumstances, so we hold on to what little hope we have.  Regardless, there's certainly a studio or two that wouldn't mind tapping into Whedon's popularity, and Whedon has been adamant in his resolve to revisit the series, so anything could happen I suppose.  Read on for some of Fillon's comments
