The last Dark Tower book is coming out next week (9/21), is anyone else anxiously awaiting the closure of this series?

I picked up the series when The Drawing of the Three was published and have been hooked ever since. I'm looking forward to the last book, but then there won't be anymore after it. Ah well.

I just finished up re-reading everything up until now in prep for the release of DK. This includes Insomnia, The Stand, the two Talisman books, Hearts in Altlantis and ''Salem''s Lot.
There are other, incidental connections to the DK series spread around through other stuff, but it''s not good to be a zealot too much.

I just picked up the first one, to kill some time on my next flight. I am really looking forward to it, as I have heard nothing but good things about this series.

When did i miss #6 coming out?

I remember Wolves of the Calla coming out in hardcover, but then I remember reading that the 6th book would be like 2005, and that he hadn''t given a time frame for #7.

<checks amazon>

Well holy crap.

I''m really behind the ball now. I''m about halfway through Wizard and Glass, but put it down for a bit to read some other books. I thought I had plenty of time before he wrote the 6th and 7th books, from what I had heard.

Guess i''ll have to get to work.

Only problem is, I don''t have hardcover versions of the first 4 books, and i''m anal about book versions. Anyone know if they''re releasing a centralized version of all of them, in some sort of uber boxed set?

They were all just published to hardcover when Wolves of the Callah was released. I''ve been meaning to pick up the 4th in hard cover, it''s the only that I haven''t as of yet, I suppose I should do that pretty soon.

I hate having mismatched versions. As of right now, I''ve got The Gunslinger in one softcover, The Drawing in a different (and I think the original) softcover, Wastelands in first trade paperback, Wizard and Glass in a different trade, and Wolves and Song of Susannah in hardcover. Truthfully, I''d rather have them all in softcover, but I can''t handle waiting that long after they come out.

Here''s hoping the end is good. I''m still not sure what I think of what King did in book 6; my judgement will depend on how he finishes it up. Unfortunately, he''s known for the way he finishes his books - and not favourably...

Strange.. I thought there were 2 more left. I could have sworn I read somewhere that 2 were coming out this year.. and 1 was coming out next year. One last summer (Song of Susannah) and then 1 this fall.. then the final book to come Summer 2005.

--edit--
I checked out the official Dark Tower page and I guess I just somehow read something really really wrong back earlier this year. Well, I''m not complaining.. that''s awesome it''s coming out next week.

One thing I noticed on the site thought is there is a list of all the books and stories that tie into the Dark Tower world.. and 2 of them kinda stumped me. Bag Of Bones and The Mist.. does anyone know how those tie into the DT series? I can''t remember anything from those being related to it.

I posted my feelings awhile back after I read the last book ""Song of Susanna"" here: http://www.gamerswithjobs.com/index.php?name=PNphpBB2&file=viewtopic&t=5741&highlight=

It *was* one my most favorite series... I''m scared to read the last one now

Apparently, King uses the number 19 a lot in Bag of Bones, and that number is introduced in The Gunslinger and has a lot to do with the series, especially the later volumes.

As far as The Mist, there''re a couple theories, and they''re definitely theories - that the Mist itself (you''ll forgive me for having never actually read that book) is a Thinny, and that some of the creatures they see when they''re riding Blaine are creatures decribed in The Mist. Like I said, though, these are pretty much just speculations. We''d probably have to ask the guy himself for a proper answer... not that he''d give it to us.

I''ve always liked the DT tie-ins in other books, but there have been a couple that felt a little forced. I was royally pissed when Black House turned into a Dark Tower book; I loved The Talisman and thought it stood beautifully on it''s own. Bringing the Tower into it felt like it perverted the first one. I prefer to read them as separate unrelated books where the characters happen to be named the same.

Can''t wait for this last book to come out. I''m sad the series is ending. I''ve been reading these books for so long.

Speaking of the tie-ins, hopefully some characters from some of King''s other works, the DT related books, like Ted from Hearts in Atlantis make an appearance.

The Talisman was a huge tie-in so it only made sense for Black House to be also. In The Talisman the world the boy kept flipping over to was obviously The Gunslingers world. And I believe you could even argue that the Talisman itself was one of the Thirteen magic crystal balls from the Wizard''s Rainbow.

In a way.. even the stories King has done that don''t directly tie in to the DT series are still part of it. They all just take place in some of the millions of alternate worlds similar to ours.

Seeker, I think it''s a lock that Ted Brautigan will be in the next book (if only briefly) since I believe it was left that he''d been kidnapped and brought back in to control ""The Breakers"". And much to Chumpy''s dismay I wouldn''t be surprised to see an appearance by Jack Sawyer either.

I don''t see how The Talisman was a tie-in. The other world wasn''t necessarily the Gunslinger''s (even knowing that it was tied together doesn''t make the world the Gunslinger''s - maybe before it moved on?); the Talisman being one of the 13 is only a possible explanation. I think it stood quite happily by itself, in it''s own King-ian dimension. I was also really surprised at the tie-in because it wasn''t only King''s book; I wouldn''t have expected another author to co-write a book so obviously part of another author''s world.

In a different tie-in question, what was the kingdom that figured in Eyes of the Dragon? I''d love to see Dennis and Peter again, even just referred to.

Yeah, I was reading a website that traced all of the connections, whether they be small like Bag of Bones or large like The Talisman... and while I haven''t read half the books with a connection, it''s cool that it exists... it brings a much larger scope to a writer who a lot of people consider sort of a serial horror writer.

Chumpy.. you already missed them.. Well, one of them really.. Dennis and his buddy Thomas were briefly mentioned in either The Drawing Of The Three or The Wastelands (forget which) at a part where Roland was telling/remembering the story of the fall of Gilead. He was talking about Flagg and how he met 2 young desperate looking men named Dennis and Thomas who were tracking Flagg. It''s been a long time since I read Eyes Of The Dragon so I forget what happened to Peter. But I definitely remember Flagg was the evil sorceror in the story. And that story took place in the ""Kingdom Of Delain"" which is mentioned in the DT short story Little Sisters of Eluria.

As for more about The Talisman.. I pulled the book out and flipped through it at random (pretty scientific I do say so myself) and came across a part where Jack has a dream about the Black Hotel and he refers to it looking like a ""dark tower"" and then his dream ends with him seeing a single blade of grass. Sounded a lot like the vision Roland has in the first gunslinger book. For some reason I had thought there was some mention of the Wastelands once Jack got out further west, but I couldn''t find it. I also came across a website that said ""thinnies"" were mentioned somewhere in The Talisman.

And you will be happy you to know that King and Straub have mapped out a third Talisman book, but as far as I know have yet to actually start writing it.

I don''t remember that at all. Guess that gives me a good excuse to reread them again.

I knew I recognized the name. I just couldn''t place it. Great story, by the way.

And Peter was crowned King of Delain, IIRC.
