Highs: Extraordinary graphics and sound; incredible tension, atmosphere, and mayhem.

Lows: Some stabs at humor fall a bit flat.

I have yet to determine if this is real but I hope it is.

It would be nice if someone scanned the actual review.

I think someone will scan before the night is over. I may go see if I can find it on the shelves.

Another update:

Bottom Line: Just as we''d hoped, it''s a non-stop ride of tension, carnage and terror. A new classic.

Game Length:20 hours or so (took the reviewer 24)

I don''t think it is real.

And how do you know this? Better question, how did this person allegedly get this issue this far in advance?

Rat Boy, great signature line. On what page did you find that quote?

Oh, and I think the scoop is probably crap.

I don''t know. Some website quoted it and I just stole it for my self.

The figure I have trouble believing above all else is the 20 hours of gameplay. That runs completely counter to everything that''s been implied or promised by id over the past couple of years. If nothing else, that''s the one thing that makes me dismiss this until I see the real mag for myself.

Either way, PC Gamer''s been fairly easy on their scores for ""event games"" such as this. The atrocious system requirements, might as well be non-existant multplayer, and my general apathy towards arcadey shooters these days makes this a non-buy for me, especially if there is no demo, but other than that, I''ll wait for the X-Box version to rent.

I figured as much, just thought I''d double check. I had money earmarked for Tales of Symphonia this week, but Doom3 might have made me think twice about that.

Whether or not this is real nobody''s asked the real question, do we care? I mean, who reviewed it? That goes a long way in determining whether or not I really care about whatever score they gave it. Reviews aren''t arbitrary judges of greatness, they''re the reviewers opinion on his/her experience playing the game. It''s hard for me to get anything meaningful if I don''t know who reviewed it.

All I''m saying is if you want to believe Doom III is great, you don''t need a review, just go buy it. If you''re looking for information about the quality of the game, this is a little too vauge for me. I''ll probably wait a bit longer to read some more reviews.

I have the July edition of PC Gamer. They weren''t very liberal with the scores. Theif got around 74% and CoH got around 84%. They did promise a surprise in their next issue.

From what I''ve played of the game (from the beta) I might be picking it up. I want to see how it would run on a machine like mine first.

I read a rumour a few weeks back saying that for the average gamer we should expect around 30 of gameplay. I blew it off thinking ""no way"", but maybe it wasn''t so far fetched? They have been working on the damn thing for about 4 years!

Hmm, around 20 hours for 4 years. That means with every year they added 5 hours of gameplay! Now that is some great development.

Uh, actually reviews ARE arbitrary. Look it up.

The part of this story that''s hard to believe is that the scan of the cover says September 2004. That would make the issue not this month''s, but over a month from now. That''s some early work.

Yeah, I was lucky enough to receive my copy today, so I''ll share it with you guys.

1. 6800 is a tad faster than X800 cards. Both run it in full glory

2. The game has four render paths: NV10, NV20, R200, and ARB2. All paths look awesome, even down to a g4mx, but the ARB2 path is the ""full package,"" and is used for the R300+ and Geforce FX+ cards. It does all it''s fancy sh*t in one pass.

3. PCI Express enhances NOTHING.

4. The difference between a 128mb and 256mb card is that the former uses compressed textures whereas the latter only compresses diffuse and specualr maps. In another words, no big deal. However, a 500mb card is needed to run the game in Ultra Quality mode.

5. 512MB is the ideal system total memory. 384 is required, 1GB is nice, but the difference is negligible.

6. Nothing special is included for a 64-bit OS.

7. A 1.5 Ghz processor is the least recommended, but a 2Ghz and above will help since...

8...The sound engine is entirely CPU dependant. Therefore a crappy soundcard works flawlessly. Not to worry, the enfine only uses a ""small percentage of cycles, much less than if the engine relied on a soundcard.

9. The only reccommendation regarding faster framerates is to disable to ""advanced special effects option."" In other words, upgrade if you have problems.

10. They tie it up by providing three levels of ""Doom lovin'' PC''s""

Low-End:
1.5GhzP4 or equivalent
512MB Ram
Geforce4 Ti 4800 or Radeon 9500

Mid-Range:
2.4GhzP4 or equivalent
1GB RAM
Geforce5950 or Radeon 9800 Pro/XT

High_End: Aka Hardware that doesn''t exist, but best guess anyway
3.4GhzP4 or AMD equivalent
2GB RAM
GeForce 6800 Ultra or Radeon X800 XT PE.

In conclusion, the game will run well on a variety of hardware, and Rob Duffy, the lead programmer, says that the game looks real good no matter what, and that it will continue to look better as hardware improves. Like all previous id engines, we''ll be playing games based on D3 for another five years down the road.
