HOARD (PSN game) - Catch-All
I'm wondering if anyone has picked this game up. It just dropped on the PSN today. Tempted...because I like the board game look, but I want to know more. I figured a good number of goodjers were at PAX so had a chance to check it out.
Details:
HOARD is a dual-stick fire-breathing game where players control dragons and try to gather the most gold possible by attacking villages, ransoming princesses, and slaying knights. Local and online multiplayer play are supported for the PlayStation®3 system version, as are leaderboards and other PlayStation®Network community features.

FOR THE HOARD!
Sorry. Looks interesting.

Picked it up last night but only got to play through the two tutorial levels.
Main complaint: yet another developer that apparently didn't properly plan for HD resolutions. The UI is tiny and text is nearly impossible to read.
Good thing is that's one of few complaints so far
You fly your dragon around twin-stick shooter style, burning the countryside, collecting gold and returning it to your lair. When you bring back enough loot you level up, allow you to boost stats for speed, defense, attack, carrying capacity and maybe something else I'm forgetting.
The countryside slowly builds up over time. Settlements start as small defenseless villages but will grow as supply carts arrive. Eventually they'll get archers that fire back, knights that chase after you, wizards towers to shoot spells, buildings that take longer to burninate, etc. You can take out the supply carts to slow their progress which is cool. Sometimes there will be a princess in transport. If you capture her, bring her back to your lair and protect her long enough you'll get a ransom which is a nice cash boost.
Instead of burning down a city you can also just damage the structures around it. Cause enough damage and the city will worship you, making its archers and knights ignore you and they'll send supply carts with cash to your lair. Apparently other players can out-influence you in that city to wrestle control away.
So all of that seems pretty cool, I like how the countryside evolves and grows as the match goes on. My only other complaint is that the PvP aspect seems rather uninteresting. Your opponents are flying around doing the same thing and you can attack each other but it's very simplistic, just point and shoot. If you die you lose the loot you were carrying at the time and are automatically sent back to your lair for a few seconds to heal up. Granted I was just playing against a single UI opponent in the two tutorials but it's hard to say if the PvP aspect will be very interesting.
Overall it seems pretty cool though and there is co-op. Not sure about online play, didn't check. I like the visual style and it seems like a neat take on the standard twin stick shooter. Hopefully I'll get to play more soon and see if there's much more to the game.

How does this seem for a 9 year old? I've been looking for a new co-op game to play with my son.

I also would like to hear more about the Co-op component. It's the only way I'll get my girlfriend to play. Age of Booty was fun until we started playing competitively and I have a feeling this would work similarly.
Politely rude. Briskly vague. Firmly uninformative.
I should hopefully get to try out co-op over the weekend. Will report back when I do!

Sounds fun, but the $15 price point combined with a lack of a demo means I'm going to pass for the time being. Stupid $15 price tag.

Doesn't mean there won't be one in the future, though I didn't see a mention of one at their site (though their forums are all but empty).
I like the first line of the IGN preview:
I can get behind those sort of statements. Especially when I didn't think it was very fun to watch, but I definitely like the concept.
Oh, and Mr. Gazebo, there is already a complaint on their forums about the text size, so let's hope they decide to patch that or something. Also, nice use of "burninate" there. I approve.

First review of the game. Apparently it's on the level of PSN games such as Greed Corp, Fat Princess, Age of Booty, and PixelJunk Shooter.

I'm retarded. I did two hours of overtime work this weekend and decided I could buy this. I don't understand what drives me to buy these games when I still haven't bought Mass Effect 2 ... and I loved Mass Effect 1 ... and it's been on super sale at Steam before.
So, anyway, this is definitely a fun little game. I put a couple hours in this evening and I have to say that the fact that most rounds last 10 minutes keeps things fresh. There a bunch of maps to choose from, which should also serve to keep things fresh in the future, for sure.
I like the level of strategy involved as it has that classic easy to learn, hard to master aspect to it, but as far as a sp game, I'm a little scared that each map is more of a puzzle to solve. Meaning, once you figure out it's trick (and in this case I'm talking about proper leveling of your dragon) you can dominate.
For example, the first map I played after the tutorial was a rather small map and I was the only dragon. This meant I was to rain down fire on everything and collect as much gold as possible. I ended up getting a bronze and was on the way to getting a silver, but then the time ended. I focused on how much my dragon can carry when leveling up (since you can carry more AND deposit faster), but now that I think about it that's not terribly useful on a small map as you're always pretty close to your home.
In another match, once again I was the only dragon, I chose a larger map and focused primarily on speed and then carrying weight. I got a gold medal my first time through without much of an issue. So, as you can see there might be a bit of a puzzle-like quality to the maps that makes them pretty easy to figure out.
However, this mostly goes out the window when you mix in more dragons ... and then humans controlling them. While DG was hesitant about pvp, I think it adds a layer or chaos to the game that throws the more bland, puzzle-like sp maps out the window as things constantly change. Wrestling control of a town away from an enemy or just flat out destroying it is fun. As is stealing princesses back and forth from each other's lairs. It's controlled insanity and it's quite fun.
My main complaints (the small text is absurd) are the puzzle-like aspects of some of the levels and it seems a little strange that you can't move when breathing fire, but that's a choice the devs made and I can live with it. I'm a bit wary, though, that with 4 dragons on screen some games may turn into sheer luck on who wins, but as of yet I can't really make that claim. So far the game is enjoyable overall, though the $15 price tag is a bit higher than I would've preferred to pay, but I'm having fun so not too much of a complaint here.

Well, you don't really read anything once you get done with the tutorials, so the text isn't all that big of a deal, if that's what you're referring to.
Edit: And they are working on a patch. I don't know who the second person posting in that thread is, but damned if he doesn't write well.

This game looks perfect for me, however I'm about to buy a PS3, but I cant seem to find it listed on the PSN Australia website, can anyone confirm/deny its existence for Australian PSN users?

I think the patch mentioned earlier will help, but they need to do this asap or it'll get lost among all the other titles coming out this holiday season.

For some reason, I can't find the game on PSN anywhere. Currently in Sweden (would that have anything to do with it?).

Woo! My partner and I finally got Gold on Cross-Purposes. Man that level is brutal - Thieves coming from all directions, 4 Wizard Towers around you, 2 Castles right beside your hoard, and Giants. We got 428k, and Gold is 425k, so it was a close shave, but it was so awesome to pull it off. She was on Thief duty while I was on Wizard Tower duty, and that worked out very well.

I'd be willing to pitch in $7 towards a 4-pack once it becomes available next week.
Edit: checkm-8, if you read this, might be a good idea to update the thread title since it's no longer just a PSN game.

Hoard appeared on Steam this afternoon. Bought it, downloaded it, played a round. Seemed pretty cool.
Three hours later I've got time to explore it a little further.
But, the game isn't available anymore. Trying to start it just takes me to the Steam store page, which says that it's "coming soon."
I guess Steam let it slip into the wild a little before they intended.
Not a huge deal, but kind of annoying.
Well, it's available to pre-purchase. I had some issues even getting to the store page and then getting it to display correctly. 4 pack for $26.99. I guess I'm in as #3.
