I'm In the Doom For Love, Simply Because It's Nearly

Doom 3 (D3) is about to launch. I've watched anticipation for the game grow on Gamers With Jobs and I've seen it eagerly talked about on other websites. Of course as is wont with the Internet, most 'talking' ends up nothing more than a series of shrieks and grunts - especially if someone claims to have got the game before launch.

Right now, across the United States, gamers who got D3 early are having their honesty contested as they try to convince other games-forum posters that, yes, the pictures of the game's box next to their computer are indeed real.

On average it will take 10 pages of embittered and jealous flame war for other people to believe them. That belief carries a heavy, heavy price.

It will eventually come to light that 89.3% of the gamers got D3 by bribing shop assistants, 16.2% were allowed to buy it "if they stopped crying and got off their damn knees" and 1.6% had to let store managers touch their peepees.

Anger, jealousy, hush money and stroking. And for what? Aren't we all getting a bit too excited? It's *dramatic pause, pipe organ crescendo* only a game, people.

Before I start ripping on overweight guys in Transformers t-shirts, I need to make it clear that I Understand (sic) how important the Doom franchise is for the games industry and that readers understand how important the first game was for me.

Doom was the first thing I did at university back in 1994. I didn't go to lectures for two weeks at the start of my degree, such was the hold it had on me. It was worth it though. That game made me feel cooler than I'd ever done before. I even remember naming my save games as 'The Killer'; John Woo and I took a trip to hell and a minigun came too.

That's just part of what warranted the hype around Doom. It also embiggend the FPS genre; it's style tearing the gaming industry a new, show tune singing, arsehole. That game took me and my underpants to places I'd never been before and to which I've rarely been to since.

That was then, though. I first played doom ten years ago. Ten. Years. (That's 20 Canadian.) Unless this new version's guaranteed to scare the crap out of us each night and tickle our monkeys in the morning, I think we should be more circumspect in our admiration of it.

Don't get me wrong, I like to get excited about games. I've found it difficult to wait for new releases and I've obsessively checked stores to see if stock had come in. I have. Past tense. I've moved on since then. I haven't grown up. I've wised up. I'm no longer able to understand apoplectic desire for a game without first seeing proof that lust for it is warranted.

Can what you're reading be true? Is 1Dgaf – The Master System of Disaster – really betraying the 5uPr3/\/\3 h4rdc0r3? Is he questioning their logic? Their ability to separate the thrill of the past and the potential of the future? You bet he is.

You see, the more we go on about a game before it's released the more dangerous a game we play (if you'll excuse the pun). Why, I think even id have a limit to how much they want their product hyped; if people become manic about a title pre-release, inevitably, their grossly self-inflated expectations won't be met (d00mk1ll476: "bUt t3h g4ym3 h4s 73h j4gg13s in korRiD0r 3, 13v31 12 8y t3h 1ight5w1tcH t3xTu3r!").

You know what I'm going to do with D3? I'm going to reserve judgement until it's released. That's eleven days for me. Yes it'll be tough, but I'm going make sure all the game's cards are on the table and are dealt by gamers who don't work for magazines, aren't 13 year olds tainted by press releases, bedraggled Doom fan boys or people that deify graphics.

This game's going to have to earn my admiration.

It's the same DOOM you loved - only updated to scream on the latest systems. What else do you need to know? What are the reviews going to say that you don't already know about DOOM? You either want to play a remake of the original, or you don't. I don't think those who are excited about playing DOOM3 don't already know exactly what they're getting.

How can they not know what they're getting? Ostensibly what we've got is an bog standard FPS that looks amazing - but people are treating it like quetzecoatl, bowing in deference and scraping before hidden depths bound to be revealed in it's flippityflop mapping technology.

Rhymes with 'yidcaff'. I don't use smilies. Imagine a wink and a wry grin at the end of most of my sentences. I don't like using exclamation marks either. I'm more friendly than you imagine.

Snicker. "embiggend". I love it -- any article that can work that in is comedy gold.

Did you read that off the back of the box or off the glowing Amazon.com reviews?

Seriously read that sentence again, it sounds like something Activision's PR department came up with. Don't get me wrong, I hope the game is great, but I'm with 1Dgaf on this one, I don't understand why it's sacrosanct to treat this game like any other. All he's doing is looking around at the hype and going, "What?"

I see your point. I mean why read reviews at all, we all know exactly what we're getting because of the name on the box! People might want to read reviews to see how good it is. Why does anyone ever read reviews?

DOOM3 is re-make of the original. We're not talking a new game here.

Sorry I should've been clearer. I read reviews to find out about the quality of the game, not necissarily the basic concepts. Though from what I've seen in Gamespot's impressions, there's alot different about this one, though most seem to like it so far. Though I still haven't read a full review yet.

Yes, you are right of course, it's just I find it funny that anyone who has been following the game in the past few weeks - with movies and screens and the pc mag review that we saw - don't already have a solid idea exactly what D3 will be like. I guess that's just me.

We should chill out and get hyped? Awesome, I'm going to my couch and take an Xtreme nap to prepare. Then I'll rush towards the store on my Razor that gets 2mph! I'll put some flames and a type R sticker on it to get it up to 3mph though, don't worry.

I wasn't hyped on this game until the last two or three days when I must admit I was taken in the wave of mania that set upon this board. Only today I was telling my lady that I have to spend the next 5 days playing this game..having spent 2 hours today confirming that it will indeed run on my system.

Is this really just a remake of the original? Are we talking like the way they remade Duke Nukem into Duke Nukem 3D or more along the lines of the way they remade Civilizations into CivNet?

If we allow these people to marry, they'll be dancing in the streets, making everyone gay and poking pee-pees together. Do you really want that!? We need to stop this gay madness before it destroys us all! - baggachipz

It's looking totally different in terms of layout, story and everything else. I think calling Doom III a "remake" is another way to say "not following the admittedly weak and tacked on plot of the first two"

What do you people expect from Doom 3?

What is it exactly that your holding out to reserve judgement for?

I see this stated several times but no one has ever stated exactly what it is that they are worried this game will or wont do?

They're worried they'll load it up and have a big, huge Episode I moment in front of their computer. It doesn't have to be anything specific. We're older and wiser nerds now, I imagine all of us have been burned a time or two trying to relive a period of our youth (Re-watching a couple Voltron episodes at 19 sticks out for me), and we of all people should at least be skeptical of the hype.

AMEN brother.. same thing for me as it was all over the public computers when I first got to college. We used to sneak into the labs around ten, play until it closed at midnight, and try not to get kicked out from our whoopin and hollaring.

This points to alot of the reason why people our age are getting hyped for this. It is the "romanticism" of playing the game back when we were younger that has us all way too hyped up for it to think logically. Part of me wants to put off buying it for a month, but there is a strong part of me that is trying to get me to stop off at the game store on my lunch break.. can't..fight.. both...

again nothing specific...just general...I fear it may suck..

Why? How? Do people realize its just a FPS.. nothing more nothing less..

Do you expect another Daikatana? seriously? from Id?

Are you worried that the gameplay will be crap? That the enemies will be mindless? level design will be awful? the pacing will be crap?

Hey, don't turn your wrath on me! I'm just saying that I think I understand others' trepidation. Hell, I could be way off, but you're telling me that you've never played a game that didn't quite engage you right, where the chemistry (for lack of a better word) felt off, and you were able to nail the specific reason every time? Then you would much better skills of analysis than I, though that's not a great feat.

I personally hope that it will scare the bejeezus out of me like System Shock 2 did. I hope the atmosphere is immersive. I hope the storyline is disjointed. I hope that I feel a muddy combination of panic, fear, and revulsion. I hope it makes my adrenaline surge. I hope I have an emotional investment in the story. I hope there is a monster that gives me the willies the way the monkeys in SS2 did or the Bullsquid did in HL when I'd face him with no ammo. The things you and some of the previews I've read make me hopeful. The things copingsaw has been saying make me apprehensive.

no...there are plenty of times that I simply didnt like a game and I couldnt tell you exactly why...

But honestly..every single one of those games were games that fell outside my genres of choice.

Sim games, Adventure Games, Strategy (turn based games), any game that is in a genre I play alot I usually have specific issues with the game that turn me off and issues I could go into great length describing.

I'm simply curious with an FPS game where there are certainly far fewer areas to really get right or wrong what specifically makes people have trepidations about Doom 3?

Case in Point.. Painkiller..just from the demo I immediatly knew it was a stinker..

Bland Level design, horrible "puzzles" bland enemies, no tension suspense, so so controls, fairly lukewarm weapons, god awful kill all monsters to make a door open magically.. etc..
