November 1 - November 5

It's around this time of year that I really start dreading putting The Week Ahead together. It's not that I don't love the onsluaght of great late fall games. The problem is that by the beginning of November most of the big games we dedicated gamers are interested in have launched, and what's left are the endlessly churning shelf fillers that describe the firm foundation of holiday video game sales. Tis the season when crap like Minute to Win It and Megamind Mega Team Unite outsell the vast majority of my favorite PC games for the year.

That said, this is a big week for Microsoft with the launch of Kinect -- their replacement for what should be the next console generation.

In coming up with a Game of the Week, which I just sort of naturally assumed must be Kinect related, I thought with what I assure you was not meant to be irony, "ok, so just pick the big Kinect launch title that people are going to get excited about and make that game of the week." I suppose I could have artificially wedged in Dance Central or Kinect Sports, but is anybody legitimately excited to play those games?

I actually want Kinect to be successful. I want to get this for my kids for Christmas, but it's launch week and I can barely draw up the enthusiasm to pick a Kinect game to list as Game of the Week. That can't be good. So instead, I'm going to give the Game of the Week to Ys: The Oath in Felghana for the PSP. I bet you didn't see that coming!

A JRPG on the PSP? No, I didn't see that one coming.

The only thing that has me vaguely interested this week is the new GoldenEye on the Wii, not because I loved the original but because I loved that developer's previous title (Dead Space Extraction).

As for Kinect... I want it to succeed, but as I said in another thread: I'm apparently in the sissy sparklepants demographic that likes this sort of thing. It'd be great to have a platform for family games other than the Wii that doesn't require knowledge of a ninety-seven button controller. However, like Elysium, I'm not excited by the launch lineup. I don't see anything there that really sells me on Kinect. Dance Central at least demonstrates the idea of Kinect, but I have absolutely no interest in playing it.

There's actually a relevant release for the PSP this week and you went for Ys: The Oath in Felghana? You've upset Kratos! God of War: Ghost of Sparta is out too... And although I won't be getting it, it's nice to see my old PSP getting such a solid release.metacritic

Yay, it's nice to see that JRPGs are in a classier ghetto than Kinect launch shovelware. No, seriously. The occasional niche GotW keeps us on our toes.

I see that Hello Kitty Seasons slipped to November 16, so I would have picked the same thing. Take that, ClockworkHouse: I am the true sissy sparklepants demographic.

A Ys remake gets the win? Wow.

Personally I might have split it between Blood Drive and Noah's Ark.

If I were a betting man, I'd lay two-to-one, maybe even three-to-one, odds that Elysium hasn't even played an Ys game, let alone the original game that's the basis for Oath in Felghana.

I want to like the Kinect, really I do, but I've learned that unless I rearrange my furniture again I'm not going to have a proper play area for it. And I do not have a small living room. Even if immediate sales look good, I also expect there will be a lot of returns when people can't get it to work in their gaming space.

Stick around. I'm full of bad ideas.

No love for James Bond: Blood Stone? It's a Bizzare Creation. I'm tempted to give it a look at some point.

Blood Drive still intrigues me, but then, zombies and a Twisted Metal vibe does sound like it could be fun. Although news just started trickling out recently and it is a "budget title".

Just don't forget the Nintendo release this coming Sunday -which comes with the Wii remote plus: Flingsmash. Who knows if it will be any good as I've seen very little on it, but for $10 more than the remote, hey, why not!?

No love for Fist of the North Star?

I wasn't all that interested (it looked like Dynasty Warriors with an Anime license that I neither know nor care about) until I tried the demo.

I won't say it's God Hand quality, but it's the closest thing I've seen since God Hand.

Not that I have the money to buy a game this week. I bought Fallout New Vegas at launch, and bought Kirby's Epic Yarn for my kids (yeah... for my kids...) so I'm pretty much tapped out until Cristmas. Way too many games from the past year on my wish list this year.

I just bought a PS3 last night, and set a bunch of demo's to download in the background. Fist of the North Star was one of them, so I'll at least take a look, but I know nothing about the game beyond my memories of watching the old anime twice about 10 years ago.
