I'm digging it so far. This series looks to have legs, because they seem to understand you can only have so many zombie gotcha moments. Its character driven. Very interesting!

Excellent first episode. A few differences from the comics, but I think they're doing a good job over-all. I'm also glad they weren't going for the jump factor. There was only one moment that was really an "Oh sh*t!" moment, and it wasn't your standard zombie-jumps-out-of-the-dark moment, either.
It was far more faithful and closer to the tone of the comics than I was expecting. Something is bugging me about the cinematography that I can't quite put my finger on, but overall I was really digging it.

I think I saw on one of the special feature documentary films on the website that they added content and story arc for tv that wasn't in the comic (I'm up to TPB Vol 7).
Do they hate women as much as the comic? I tried to get into the comic and it was somewhat interesting, but I couldn't stand all the woman hating that was in there. Does it seem to be following the comic pretty closely?

What do you mean by women hating? I'm reading the fourth TPB, so I'm better than 20 issues into the series. I'm not getting a sexist feel from the comic at all. I'm not saying women haven't been portrayed negatively, just that so have pretty much every male character. Heck, even Rick comes off as a pretty big ass.
Torso zombie in the park... amazing makeup and effect. Hoping that I will enjoy the deviations from the comic, instead of watching the comic just play out onscreen. Seems really well shot but sh*t like that persistence-of-vision filter they used on Rick's POV in the hospital look silly and cheap. Overall I was quite impressed though.
Literally just finished the first episode so glad a thread exists already! Thought it was very good, particularly enjoyed the extra insights into other characters not in the comic - there, the first section follows Rick exclusively.

I really, really liked the tone and pacing, I thought it was perfect. I had the same concern, and am very happy that they went with the more meandering pace that they chose. It really suits the material.

It's pretty good. It takes some minor liberties with the plot specifics vs the comics, but that is to be expected. My wife (who hates horror stuff and admitted being creeped out by the show) even admitted it's a good show so far.

Going into the show I wasn't so sure of Jon Bernthal playing Shane, but after just a few scenes I though he did a great job in the role and will admit I was wrong. Also, in the "making of" documentaries they mention that AMC really let them keep a lot of what other networks might cut and I thought it was kind of a fluff comment, but after watching the first episode I can really see, and appreciate, that they respect the viewing audiences maturity. I mean, they shot a child zombie on camera in the first few minutes of the show, you can't even do that in Left for Dead.
Overall I like the episode and think AMC has a real winner, and I agree with Irongut, the episode flew by and I'm looking forward to more.
I think the fact that they make it pretty clear shooting the little girl was a psychologically scarring event casts the scene in a different light than most zombie cinema. TWDs comic story has some really horrible things being done to and by the survivors, and it clearly takes a toll on the mental health of those who live to fight on.

Yup. I love that the title refers to the survivors as much as - or even moreso than - it does to the zombies.

Much like the comic, not sure what to think. I was half-way through compendium 1 before I started to like it for sure. Love came in shortly after.
I think the show writers did a better job setting up the characters than Kirkman did initially(they were very much archatypes). The marital troubles Rick has took a long time to flesh out in the comic. And it felt very ambiguous to me whether the marriage was always on the rocks or if it was just the stress of the times.
Darabont seems to be choosing the right panels and pages to recreate-like the long trot into Atlanta. He has a good pedigree of adapting, even improving previous works by Stephen King. Biggest credit I can give to him and the writers is that I watched the show last night, rather than anticipating water shed moments from the comic.
I am really wondering how some of the hardcore, f*cked up scenes will play on basic cable. There are some gruesome moments.
It was 67 minutes long on iTunes. I think that makes it about average. Most hour long shows run 45 minutes or so.
But my take is that is was awesome. It's right up there with 28 Days Later in excellence. I think it is even better, although it kind of gets dinged for ripping off the opening of said movie. But then, so did the comic.

The main thing is that this is not just a well executed show, this has a lot of artistic merit. Frank Darabont was the right guy to bring in for this, because he has that capability to use subtle techniques in order to craft an epic tale.

Good stuff, I thoroughly enjoyed it and am really glad that it seems to mirror the character driven tone of the comics.
