Yeah, we had an interview on that. Now the guys announced:

Yes it's true, a lot of sites have reported it and we can confirm that C:G is going to be released via Steam soon.

They don't know if Valve will offer a stand-alone version for download.

Can anybody of the Steam freaks here detail if it's likely that I can download the game and wipe Steam off my HD again or if it kinda might require me to have the thing installed?

Or in other words: could you download it and send it to someone else (who can run it without having Steam on his system.)

To be perfectly honest, I''d rather pay $10 and buy a putative CD-Rom from EBX than install Steam. As much as I am Mr. ""Give the Developer the Benefit of the Doubt"", Steam needs to spend a lot more time in the hopper before it becomes a worthwhile delivery system. Right now, it''s just nasty.

That''s a difficult call to make at this stage. Half-life 2D is a flash game, right? That means it''ll probably run from its own EXE and not the Steam EXE.

Currently you can copy any HL mod''s Steam cache file, but you still need to run it through Steam if you want to play (much like you need HL to run a mod). That''s because the Steam EXE has the HL engine in it.

I''ll keep an eye out for the Steam release and put a post up as soon as I''ve downloaded HL 2D.

Hum.

When you start you Steam-Clients for the next time, you''ll find Codename: Gordon in the Games/Coming Soon-Section.

This mean, that you can download C:G from now on but can''t play it until VALVe fully releases it. So if you''d like to be one of the first to play C:G, fire up Steam and preload the game.

Argh, I fully expected Valve to cripple the release of HL 2D like this even in addition to using it as a juicy morsel to pimp Steam with.

Even so, since I have some weird download fetish I''ll download the cache file and wait it out while Valve decides when it will allow us to play HL 2D.

EDIT: Removed dripping sarcasm that made me sound like a rabid Valve/Steam hater.

The only problems I''ve had with Steam were on release, when 500,000 people tried to download at the same time. Otherwise, it''s been swell. I have a very nice DSL connection rate, not sure if that helps.

For those of us with sh*t-ass crap-ass 56K, something like Steam is utterly terrifying.
