Anybody else pre-order this? I just got the email to download the beta client.

Anybody want to group up over the next couple of days/weeks?

I just noticed - if you lookclosely on the patterns of runes on the skin of Certis'' avatar, he is sporting a stick-figure bunny-rabbit on his right (left for us looking) shoulder.

And he calls himselfevil...

You claim you''re evil and ""the next level"" but you look like a cartoon character and have a bunny tatoo on your right shoulder. Name one cartoon character who was actually evil and not just misunterstood?

Depends what ya like. If you like fast, exciting combat instead of baking break or dancing in a cantina then you''ll probably like it.

This game is all about combat (and RP if that''s your thing). PLain and simple.

It''s like GTA with Superheroes... run around a big city and kick the ^$#% out of punks. WHat''s better than that?

Last night I was running through some back alleys over to the T to get to another part of the city when I came across a trio of hoodlums harassing a young lady, one of them was yanking at her purse while the others cheered him on. SO what''s a karate hero to do? WADE IN, baby, fists and feet a-flyin!

POW! BLAM! SMACK!

So I kicked their asses. Sumbitches.

And the chick was grateful, calling me ""awesome"" and bowing at my feet. 8)

have you seen any ""real"" superhero copy cats?

Like people choosing their costume/name/powers to match a comic book character?

There was a lot of that during the first big influx of testers (around Feb. I think), but that was about it. Most people are more interested in creating ""their"" character than somebody else''s. There were quite a few Hulk, Hhulk, Hulke, etc. characters for a while, but people got tired of that pretty quickly and moved on.

Once the game hits retail that won''t be allowed at all, since it''s trademark/copyright infringement.

Oh yeah I''m all over excitement. I can''t stand the SWG style MMORPGs.

Is there actually skill involved in combat? Or is it the autoattack kind of thing (like, click on baddie, click on attack, wait. repeat.)

I don''t know how much I can say so I''m being deliberately vague here in saying combat is quite interactive. It requires both thought and user intervention.

If I had to liken it to another game''s combat I''d say it''s more like DAOC (e.g. situational combat ""moves"") than it is EQ or SWG (e.g. click auto-attack and get a soda).

Well, sort of. You can set one power to ""auto"", which means as soon as the timer is up it''ll activate again. That doesn''t have to be an attack power though, plenty of people use it for self-buffs, etc.

Combat depends a lot on your archetype, but for the most part it''s ""click target, click power 1, click power 2, click power 3, click power 1, dead, click new target, repeat."" The skill comes in knowing which powers to use when, and balancing your power use with endurance consumption. If you just jump into the middle of a group of baddies and begin mashing buttons wildly you''ll die. If you jump into the middle of a group of baddies and use the right powers at the right time you''ll kick their collective asses.

The ability to, even solo, fight multiple enemies at a time is one of the best aspects of combat in this game. When you get into a group, that just becomes magnified even further. No slow boring solo pulls in this game. Some people do still do that, but it''s their fault for not shaking off the EQ mindset, rather than any necessity of the game. AoEs in this game are actually fun and useful.

If you ever find youself in a group that''s solo-pulling high con enemies, leave. You''re not in a good group. You''ll make more xp (and have WAY more fun) plowing through hordes of even con or slightly higher enemies.

I knew everything else, but what''s an AoE? Axis of Evil? Assault of Emus? Which I suppose is just the sort of thing Elysium is wary of in his role as new father.

AoE = Area of Effect

It''s a type of attack/effect that can ""hit"" multiple targets at the same time. Like a grenade...

AoE = Area of Effect. It''s any power that has a radius effect rather than just a single target. In most MMORPGs like EQ AoE powers are of limited usefulness because you''re only fighting one or two enemies at a time anyway.

In City of Heroes, a good group will have a controller that can AoE root or stun, allowing the blasters to unleash the full wrath of their arsenal on large numbers of enemies at once.

Typical tactics against fairly evenly matched opponents involve the Tankers and Scrappers charging the enemy group and engaging. The Controller(s) follow up with some sort of AoE root or stun, and then the Blasters and Defenders go to town. Tankers/Scrappers work to keep aggro, the Controller roots/holds anyone trying to charge the Blaster/Defender line, and everyone rips everything apart. Groups can take upwards of 15-20 enemies at a time like this as long as the players know what they''re doing.

For anyone who doesn''t know what I mean by Tanker, Scrapper, etc., I recommend you check out www.coh.com for all the info you need.

P.S. Aggro = monster aggression, or hate. Monsters attack the person they have the most hate towards, so tough characters like Tankers try to keep enemy attention on themselves rather than the fragile Blasters, Defenders, Controllers.

Is there some kind of guild/clan system? I did a quick scan of the website, but didn''t see anything about it.
