Manga Classics?
Monday, March 22nd, 2004 - 3:05pm
I'm in Waldenbooks over the weekend, and there is a pretty amazing Manga section-probably 75 series, complete, as far as I can tell.
Since I don't read manga, I had a "what am I missing" moment, and then put the wallet away, remembering that there are some serious anime/manga freaks here that may be able to steer me clear of a bad series.
So what would titles wold you recommend to someone that wants to see what they've been missing?
Other than Megatokyo........Akira........Cowboy Bebop........

Ghost in the shell
Ninja scroll
One more that has ""Blue"" in its title... Can''t remember...
edit:
Ah yes, there is this series called ""Legend of the Overfiend"" (or something) if you prefer some more ""inapropriate"" subjects...
edit No.2:
Well, after re-checking some of reviews of Legend of the Overfiend, you really may want to steer clear of that...
Panem et circenses

Blue Gender?
Actualy, it''s Perfect Blue.

I have those all the time. I usually remind myself that even if I quit sleeping and working, I still wouldn''t have enough free time to check out every potentially cool thing out there.
Lone Wolf and Cub by Kazuo Koike and Goseki Kojima if haven''t read it, way cool and currently being distro''ed in little collected paperbacks.
End of line
Blue Seed? - a high school girl is implanted with some thingy that''s called a blue seed ... she has a twin sister who apparently dies right before she meets her, and she''s the hope of mankind by sacrificing herself.
Blue Sub Six? - Psycho mad scientist tries to destroy mankind with wierd mutants .. oh yeah ... earth is covered in water .. that''s why everyone''s riding around in subs
Definitely go for Cowboy Bebop ... also .. there''s a new version that''s kinda set in an alternate universe. The stories are sorta the same but I heard there''s some pretty big differences.
Berserk was a fun read ... and Yu-Yu Hakusho or Ah My Goddess are VERY fun reads
g''luck and welcome to the wide world of manga ... wait till you get anime crazy too
Appleseed by Masamune Shirow
Read it and you can find out the origin of my nic in volume four I believe.
Gunmu or Battle Angel Alita is the american title. Its a series of small graphic novels.
I would be very interested if you could find the Five Star Stories graphic novels they translated into english a few years back. (I have a tattoo of the mirage knights emblem on my back)
Being fangoriously devoured by a gelatinous monster.
Or La Blue Girl....rowr!!!

Specifically: Naruto, One Piece, SandLand, and Shaman King.

Is that a manga? I love the anime.
Then again, I''m so far behind in my reading that adding manga won''t help

My first anime was Ninja Scroll. I hated it and thought it was the dumbest thing ever, and was surprised anyone could actually pretend anime was ""mature"".
Then I saw Ranma, and that was funny. And some other series, Full Metal overdrive something something, about a crack team of military teens who must infiltrate a school undercover and protect the daughter of a diplomat. It''s funny, too.
In conclusion, I don''t know anything about anime.
The man wears a bucket of KFC on his head. I wouldn't expect anything less. - Pred
I''d suggest Inuyasha, it''s one of my favorite series/mangas.
Cowboy Bebop is always good! There''s never a bad time for bebop... other than the episode with the space ship hijacking after 9-11... hehe, still can''t believe they pulled one of the best episodes over a minute of footage.

Does any of you guys knows what is the anime movie in which people have these digital counters on their forheads that show telekinetic power or something? I have seen a small teaser on TV long time ago, and there were these two guys with them counters that ripped a city apart while fighting each other... I''d like to see that one really bad.

I hear that.

Actually they pulled ""Cowboy Funk"" after 9/11 because it shows a bomber trying to blow up two really tall twin skyscrapers.
Then they pulled ""Wild Horses"", the one with the shuttle crashing, after the Columbia incident. I think that''s the only one''s they''ve ever pulled.
*edit* it wasn''t a shuttle hijacking but a shuttle crashing. My bad.

Actually I just finished watching all the episodes of Cowboy Bebop. Wow, talk about a fantastic show. They stopped making episodes because... ?
I want to find out more about the Spike and Vicious plotline.
Being fangoriously devoured by a gelatinous monster.
The main character died?
Wha? Did I miss an episode? Are there more than 2 DVD''s? The last episode I saw was the one where the mechanical arm guy chases down his exgirlfriend and collects the bounty on her boyfriend. Is there another episode?
They made a movie... They could make more episodes of adventures before he died.
Being fangoriously devoured by a gelatinous monster.
God yes. There''s like sixteen more episodes. You''ve got some goodness ahead of you, it seems.

fang ye''r FAR from finished ... you got a loong way to go
<poke to Gorack for that spoiler>
I was afraid that spoiler was going to bite someone, but I didn''t delete it because I figure it''d be like revealing that Rosebud referred to Charles Foster Kane''s saucy governess.* It''s been out long enough for you to have had your chance to see it.
In any case, I don''t think continuity ever stood in the way of revisiting a show, especially in movie form. It seems the movies of popular anime shows exist in sort of an alternate reality where some aspects of the show''s plot may exist while other aspects are completely ignored. I believe in the DVD commentaries it was mentioned that one of the original goals of the show was for it to be a limited number of episodes. It probably keeps the episodes from becoming cookie-cutter scripts and allows for a more complex overarching storyline.
* Rosebud did not refer to Charles Foster Kane''s saucy governess.

Oh its allright. I dont mind the spoiler. The devil isnt always in the details. A lot of times its seeing how they get there.
Yes I know they''ve been out for a while. I saw the first episode like 3-4 years ago but never had a chance to see the others till now. Good to know that there is more. I was wondering why they would introduce Edward, only to have her in 2 episodes before they stopped. They''ve also done minimal character development for Einstein other than his introduction episode. I figured there is a lot more to him based on his presence in the movie.
Time to go out and see if they''ve lowered the price on the DVD box set at all. Maybe Ill pick up some more Slayers episodes. I loved the first series and Slayers Next. FiYAH BOOWL! (fireball)
Being fangoriously devoured by a gelatinous monster.
This is one of the reasons I respect Cowboy Bebop so much, they told their story and they were done. That''s it. They didn''t have to adhere to the old TV/Anime formulas because they weren''t trying to keep everything the same at the end of every episode. They didn''t have 300 subplots that drug on forever to delay the main plot or the character come back after a couple of years and go ""Hey! I''m totally wacky now, let''s dance!"". They didn''t try to change the characters or stories in akward ways to drag them out. It''s a rare thing for such a great show to know when it''s over and just stop. I respect the minimalism of that method, tell your story and nothing else. It turns the show from good to something special, especially when compared to something like, well, every other anime series ever.
It''s also one of the reasons I dislike the movie

Sorry they have been showing it on Cartoon Network for like 3 years. I don''t really like the show (although the music is cool) and have only seen a few scattered episodes and even I knew the end. I just though anyone interested would have watched them by now.
I liked Trigun for telling the story and then being done. At least I think they did that.
I''ve never seen a single episode, I''m not into anime/manga at ALL, and even I knew the ending.

Trigun was good, as was Blue Gender. Anyone remember the show Kikider, its about a robot or something, I only cought the last episodes before they stop running it. One anime I''m glad got the axe is FHCH, or fooly cooly. I couldn''t stand that garbage, the story could have made sense if I droped acid before I started watching it.
Rogue
Mage
Shaman
I think that it''s FLCL. But yeah, I missed the point of that one too. I think it''s mostly that a surprising number of people have some kind of strange fetish involving adult women being attracted to underage boys.
That show also had the longest rolling credits in anime history. Usually credits get cut off on network tv but this one was showed all the time.
Rogue
Mage
Shaman
Eh. FLCL didn''t get the axe, they only ever made six episodes, since that was all it took to tell the story.
Also, you''re both mad for not loving it. MAD I tell you.

Ah... Anime, where would the world be with out it!
...anyone know when the EVA movie is due?
