Baldur's Gate 2....wow...just, wow...
Thursday, March 20th, 2003 - 3:05pm
Hi there, folks, how are you? I just wanted to share my awe of this game. I recently purchased a used copy last night at EB after taking the in-store credit I had put down for Master of Orion 3 and NOT buying it. (thanks to my buddy Tom Chick for steering me away from THAT one
) I've only played this game for about an hour or so, but it's amazing.
Sure, I know it's old, but I avoided buying it for so long becuase the original BG bored me so. They've so improved upon that game that it amazes me. Also, I just LOVE Minsc and Boo!
Have you ever put off purchasing a game for some time, only to be totally impressed by it later?
If it has a spaceship in it, I'll play it. - http://www.spacegamejunkie.com/

BG 2 is one of those games I wish I could erase my memory of so I could play it again with fresh eyes.
Planescape Torment is one that I never touched for various flimsy reasons, one being the ""zoomed in"" look of it. I got it up a few months ago and it''s been fantastic, almost more of an adventure game than a RPG.
I heard that they were keeping Elysium in the ICU not because he needed intensive care, but because they needed to be careful of his intensity. - Wordsmythe
Sure. Planescape:Torment. 9 bucks for the best RPG EVAR.
It happens to me all the time. I got Giants that way, and a bunch of dreamcast games. I made it a rule not to buy more than one game every few months at full price(50+). I feel they are overpriced.

If I didn''t have a better idea of what went into gaming development and publishing, I''d agree with you.

WooHoo BG 2 is up toward the top of my all time top ten games, Just so much better than the first but continuing the storyline. So many optional side quests and stuff to discover.
and Minsc and Boo too!(you really should try and get Viconia in the party as her remarks to Minsc are pretty damn funny)
Can''t say enough good stuff about this game. I enjoyed NWN but it pales in comparison to Baldurs Gate 2.
(BG2 Dark Alliance on the PS2 SUCKS in comparison!
)

One of my top 3 rpg''s on any platform ever! Great game.

Stop this chatter. You''re going to make me install it again. I bought it cheap on eBay several months ago due to everyone''s praise. However, I never made it past the opening scene. I just had too much trouble paying attention to everyone at once. It was a little too overwhelming for me. Now you''re going to go and talk it up and make me re-install. If you''re going to force me to do this, can you at least give me some pointers on perhaps a better way to approach it?

What are the other two?

The Secret of Mana & Fallout! These two and BG2 make up my holy trinity of rpg''s.
Zelda Link to the Past and a couple of SSI''s gold box games are right up there though.

BG2 is awesome, that reminds me I never even started the Throne of Bhall expansion. Too many games, too little time.

Dont give in Sway.
We can anchor the vocal minority against BG2.
I didnt like BG and I didnt like BG2.
I really wanted to get into it because it made some neat enchancements to the ruleset regarding character skills. The one handed, two handed and dual wield specializations looked really cool.
I didn''t like the level design. I got lost and frustrated in the first half hour trying to escape the prison. Everything was so dark, narrow and ambiguous.
I much prefered IWD2 and games where I can create the whole party.
Being fangoriously devoured by a gelatinous monster.
Me too, that''s why I used the multiplayer party trick to get the party I wanted. If I missed anything with that, I feel confident I made up for it by playing the game the way I like.

I too have recently discovered the joy of old, cheap, and previously used games.
In the past few months, I''ve picked up Fallout 1 and 2, Planescape, Arcanum, Baldur''s Gate, and Homeworld for about $50 total.
I''ve loved every one of them, except Baldur''s Gate. I must really suck, because I was always dying. Curse you arrow-flinging kobalds!
Smaller, slower, dumber
While I agree with the sentiment, I just want to point something out.
This is capitalism, the worth of the item is determined by the consumer, not the producer. So when the customers say it''s over priced, it costs too much. So the publishers need to stop wasting money, and make development easier and cheaper, to lower prices. Of course, they''re not going to do that, cause publishing is damn near a monopoly nowadays anyway, but thats sorta off topic

Close, but I''d make a slight change to this. The worth of an item is determined by what the consumer will pay. It doesn''t matter a bit if the consumer says its overpriced if they promptly turn around and pay that price. We consumers have given the publishers no solid reason to lower prices.
I felt -- I feel -- that Shawn, Rob and Julian were making out with the game, and as their friend I felt it was important to point out that they were making out with an ugly chick. - Cory Banks, keeping it real
BG2, Throne of Bhaal, Fallout = best crpgs I have ever played, technically speaking. In terms of ''wow factor'', though, I''d have to say Wasteland. Heh, did I just date myself?
I really enjoyed all the Infinity Engine games. Even the ''weak'' ones (IWD2) were still superior to 90% of everything else.
NWN is a tough one. Played through it, had some fun, didn''t think it was ''that bad''. Played some modules. But frankly....I think in the end it''s a dissapointment. The 3d thing just isn''t implemented well, in my opinion. If I wanted to play Diablo, I''d play Diablo. /shrug.
He's one of God's own prototypes. Some kind of mutant never considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die.
BG2 sure is a great game. As are Plancescape Torment and Anachronox. They were worth every single cent that went into them from my pocket

Also if you get the chance try out Ambermoon for the Amiga. Yes I have an original copy of that here, even though I sold my Amiga some time ago. And I am really glad I can now play these games again thanks to emulation
No hay banda!
What irks me about this is that video gaming is the one industry that hasn''t been mutilated by the foul grip of inflation. 20 years ago, back in 1983, Atari games cost $50 brand new.
Time is much more of a factor in gaming for me than money. Take Xenosaga, for example. I was loving that game when I first started it. I''m now about 40 hours in, and feeling lukewarm about the game, and it looks pretty grim in terms of regaining interest before I finish it. I''m burned a lot worse by the 40 hours vested in a game thatseemed good than the $40 I spent. Time is money.

I''d have to agree with some of the selections for best RPG... in particular Fallout and Planescape: Torment.
I enjoyed Baldur''s Gate. Didn''t get into BG2. Like fangblackbone, I was put off by some of BG2''s early levels.
What I really need to do is pick up/play some of these sequels I never got around to (Fallout 2, BG2 and IWD2) after finishing Divine Divinity.
If you can make it through Irenicus Dungeon at the start into the city, the game just completely opens up from there, the first couple of levels for me aren''t representitive of the rest of the game and I hate doing them if I replay the game.

So, BG1 & 2 are both on sale on Impulse for $4.99ea (DRM-free no less). I have a gamestop gift card and wondered which one to pick up. So far I'm thinking of skipping BG1 and going straight for BG2. I've never played any of these. Thoughts? Recommendations?
Thanks!
First off - make sure to check that both come with their respective expansion packs, if not, I'd suggest grabbing the "complete" versions from GOG when you can.
Secondly, Buy both - then mod them into one big game at ultra high widescreen resolutions! It's the only sane thing to do!

I agree with all the above. You get the BG2 improvements in BG1 and it's awesome to play them seamlessly.
Note that you will spend a long time getting it setup as you need to follow the directions to a t. It's totally worth it. Totes.
Edit: Wow. What a necro.
Here are two of the newer threads, one dealing with the BiG project cheesy is talking about.

Whoah, this thread is 2 months short of being nine years old.
Dayam. That's not just a Raise Dead, that's a full Resurrection.

If time were no object I'd certainly get both. It's more immersive to go through the entire saga start to finish. But I do remember having a lot more fun with BG2 than BG1. I think relationships were thrown into BG1 as an experiment and were a lot more polished in BG2. The NPCs are better-defined in general, I think, though their artwork was, in my opinion, worse.
However, I found the BG2 expansion (and conclusion to the saga) Throne of Bhaal tedious, due to the super-high levels you reach. D&D just breaks at that point.
DEFINITELY get Planescape:Torment if that's at all an option.
Wow... Went to buy BG2 tonight and found this on Impulse:
Dungeons & Dragons Anthology: The Master Collection
Price: $9.99
Includes:
Baldur’s Gate 1 & 2 + Expansions
Icewind Dale 1 & 2 + Expansions
Planescape: Torment
The Temple of Elemental Evil
SOLD!
Yup! I bought it this afternoon after reading this thread. 9.99 is a great price for all of those.
I should point out that I still own the physical media for all of these but I still bought the downloadable versions...

That is completely insane. Link. It's beyond insane, it's borderline insulting to the Infinity Engine. Less than two dollars a game for one of the greatest collections in the history of gaming. Unbelievable.

Can you download and install the games standalone, or must you have Gamestop's evil tentacular presence on your machine?
(yes, I know it probably hasn't changed that much since it was owned by Stardock, but I hate Gamestop. And I would be much happier if I could use a VM to download the game files, blow away the VM, and then just have the standalone games.)

You need Impulse to download the games (and maybe to install them?). After that, you don't need impulse to run them. Many (if not all) of these games have "DRM Free" listed on their individual game pages.
If you value your gaming in terms of hours-of-playtime/$-spent that's probably the best deal you'll ever get. Even if you're just going through the main story I'm pretty sure that's a couple hundred hours of gaming there, more if you're the 'must.do.everything' type.
