Gardeners with Jobs

With winter winding down (I hope...pray), I'm stoked to get my seeds in the ground.
Here's what we have on tap this year:
Tomatoes (don't know what variety yet)
Peppers (Thai and sweet)
Collards
Arugula
Spinach
Lettuce
Scallions
Sweet onions (just started the seeds yesterday)
Broccoli
Butternut Squash
Canteloupe
Green beans
Asparagus (but the chutes won't be ready until next year)
[edit] and carrots
Hmm. I know I'm missing something...
We want to start some grape vines and blueberry bushes too, but maybe next year.
Anyone else into gardening?

Damn, but that''s a lot of planting! How big is your garden space?

We have 6.4 acres. We have a plot tilled with manure that is about 50'' x 50''.
We''re purposefully planting more than we think we can handle, so we can know how to do it better next year.

Be very careful if you decide to radishes, god knows you''ll end up with more than you have friends.
I tend to stick to growing my peppers indoors.
Do a little hobby growin here and there. Mainly experimenting and farting around. Although my crocus keep coming back for more, they are starting to spook me a bit
damn robust flowers.

I can''t even get a chia pet to grow much less a garden.... although my wife is a freaking plant genious. She has one of those aloe plants thats liek 3 feet tall. Must have known her husband would like to play with fire too much

Swiss chard. That''s what you''re missing. Also kale and rutabagas.
Seriously though, why not grow some pumpkins and zucchini? You have enough space and they''re fun to watch because they grow so damn fast.

Well, I hate zucchini (they''re eerie phalluses that never stop growing!) and I think we will plan a pumpkin patch - we just need to find another space where they can take over.
Kale and rutabaga are good ideas...I think we''ll see how this list goes for now though

I''ve been looking at the garden lately. We have no plan for what we''re putting in this year yet. I can''t decide if I want to rent a tiller or just go at it with a shovel. We''ve been adding soil amendments for a couple of years so it should be soft enough.
I''ve got some rasberries that a planted two years ago that are really taking off already. Should produce alot of berries this year.
We always have:
Green Beans
Tomatoes
Carrots
Corn
Cucumbers
Sometimes:
Pumpkins
Potatoes
Broccoli
Sunflowers
Various Lettuce
Green Peppers
We usually start seeds inside about April.
I''d like to try grapes growing some eventually.

Hmmm, what you guys are talking about sounds uncomfortably close to work. I have a feeling it wouldn''t be my thing.

Might I suggest a location for Raspberry plants. They take a few years to really start pumping out the fruit, but once they do you''ll have some great fodder for jams, jellies, and syrups. Not to mention fresh raspberries with cereal in the morning. I''m more biased towards raspberries than blue berries.
Rhubarb seems to be a very robust plant in my area, and you can make some excellent pies, crisps, and cobblers with it. Rhubarb Strawberry pie...MMMMmmmmmm.
Vegetable area looked good, just thought I would add some sweet tooth items to it.
Only vegetable item I would add on is Corn. Nothin like corn on the cob that you just picked that afternoon.

Yeah, I don''t have much luck with corn here. The critter-to-yield ratio is just too low.

Egg Plant is very nice you might want to give that a try.

Second vote on rhubarb. Plant it alongside a north wall and watch it go. Like a weed. And it''s a perennial so you don''t ever have to do another thing with it. So says the man with the condo.

WHERE THE HELL ARE THE CARROTS ON YOUR LIST?

Nice use of orange
I knew I was forgetting something -- shazzam! and carrots.

A childhood of forced labor shelling bushels of peas, shucking corn, and snapping green beans pretty much cured me of any desire for vegetable gardening.
I do manage a small herb garden, though. Mostly perennial, no-muss, no-fuss herbs like chives, thyme, and sage.

You forgot cattle. Cows are essential to any garden.
Yeah me too, I remember one year my parents had planted this pumpking patch... I just assumed they must all be for Jack-o-Lanterns so one day after school I had a bunch of friends over and we carved them all up. We had like 42 Jack-o-Lanterns that year plus all the ones we gave away. My parents were kind of grumpy that I had carved them all up though

my fiance handles all the vegitable gardening, so i''m not really sure what we''re in for this year.. our veggie garden is pretty small though.. about 10''x 5'' or so.
Oddly enough she grows the veggies and I grow the flowers. I''ve got a few rose bushes in a small garden, added a couple new ones around the outside of the house this year in addition to a climbing rose which i''m hoping will take over a good portion of our fence. Haven''t gotten aroudn to putting down all the bulbs we have, and can''t remember which ones they are at the moment either but i know we bought a bunch to plant(hopefully we''ll get them planted soon.. it''s getting late in the season for it).
He he, we''ve had the same problem with starlings. Used to pick them off with a pellet gun. Used the 12 gauge shotgun once, but knocked down the first row of corn.
I don''t know if peas are worth it to you, but I really enjoy them. Especially raw.
This thread makes me happy. Just moved into married student housing on campus this last fall, now I can have a garden again!
