Seattle Arkham Horror night - 11/13
After the ill-fated attempt at finishing comprehending a game of Arkham Horror at Momgamer's last weekend, we want to give it another go.
Thanksgiving week is no good, of course, but anyone up for doing this earlier in November? Saturday night would put it on 11/6, 13, or 20. If no one suggests a different date, we'll probably host it on 11/13.
This review, incidentally, has gotten me itching to play again.
Anyone in?
EDIT:
Ok, we're doing this at our place in Seattle on 11/13 from 5pm to, hopefully, whenever we finish an entire game. PM for directions.

I'd like to give it another go.
I can do either the 6th or the 13th, with a preference for the 13th. Unless clover and Edwin have bigified their table, it might be better off to do it at my place - our dining table easily seats 6 people around a large gameboard, and 8 if we a bit snuggly.

I've had Arkham for about a year and a half now. I have played two games. One with my buddy, and another where we convinced our then Girlfriends, now wives, to play with us. How in the world we convinced them, they played, and they still married to us is a mystery to me. I do wish that I could find more people to play it though, as I'm sure once all the mechanics are second nature it is awesome.

I'm in, on either the 6th or the 13th.
What should I bring?

I'd love to but grad school is crushing me until its boot and I know for a fact that I have a test to take Saturday the 13th. Yes, Saturday. D:
I definitely want to know how this turns out though. Any game which ports you to strange eldritch lands has got to be worth some study.
I've done some research and found very helpful sources for 1 or 2 page reference sheets and play aids. Some great examples can be found predominantly from boardgamegeek.com but found some others. I'll have some of these to bring to the game to share. See what you like.

I'm going to try to make it, once we nail down a date.
So how far did you guys make it the other night?
A couple tips for players that are just learning the game.
1. The gameplay happens in discrete phases - upkeep, movement, encounters. Just get through one phase at a time. The rule book doesn't do a great job of compartmentalizing these phases so things seem much more complicated than they really are.
2. Don't sweat it if you realize you forgot a die roll modifier or forgot to move a monster (or not move a monster, or whatever). If you're OCD about remembering every detail and modifier you could go kinda nuts. Eventually all that stuff becomes second nature.
3. Since this is a co-op game house rules work out pretty well. We've done a few things to add some options and some things to streamline play --- for example we took out all the rumor cards and some of the monster movement types (particularly those in some of the expansions) because they add a lot of book keeping. Doing so might make the game slightly easier, but really, who cares? It's not like you are playing for money.

I don't think they do. What they have is called the Feeds
By the way, the Boardgame Geek links do go to the files, but they want you to complete the "Captcha" window to verify that you are not an automaton.

One tip I learnt is that when you draw from the card pile that says where the monsters go, what happens etc., work from the bottom upwards.
Another variant was, IIRC, is that if you get a clue token spawning on a warp, put it instead on the nearest green location. That way you get to explore more areas. (At least I think that was the home rule - it was definitely to do with putting the clue tokens on areas that wouldn't normally get visited).
I think if it's less noisy this time it will be much easier to learn/play. The noise made it hard to follow along last time.
The help files from Tekman above really help too! Thanks!
4 turns? So, about two hours in.

I have a Norwescon committee meeting until 3ish that day in Seatac...I could probably make it after then, although I assume the arkham horror game would be well under way. If there are more board games after that, I'm game!
Argh - I'm going to have to bow out - turns out I'm busy on the weekends of 6th and 13th, and then my mum's in town for nearly 3 weeks.
Maybe we host the one after at our place in December?

Ok, we're going to call it the 13th, from 5pm to 9 or 10 at our place again. We're even going to get a second table to have space for all the teeny tiny parts.

Just got the word from the wife- I'm in!
I figure by now you guys think she's imaginary, but she does actually exist. One of these days she'll be able to come to a game night, or heaven forbid we'll have one at our house.
Pics or it didn't.... ah, never mind
We're still on. PM me if you need directions, everyone!

I'm normally up for boardgames, but Arkham Horror is on my "politely decline" list.

What was the verdict on the game? Exquisitely evil automaton or overly complicated behemoth?

Miami, FLSeattle, WAAn overly complicated behemoth to learn that is an evil automaton. Now that most of us know how it should work, we can get through the turns and phases pretty quickly. I am dying to play again.
