EA to make an offer you can't refuse...

Uh, how is this going to work? FPS? What do you think this is the Army, where you shoot 'em a mile away? You've gotta get up close like this and bada-bing. You blow their brains all over your nice Ivy League suit.

My favorite part:

Ugh. Am I the only one here who hates EA? Maybe it''s the gamer equivelant of OSS zealots hating Microsoft.

Ugh.

I just can''t imagine this being a good game. Even if they went ahead and blatantly stole the gameplay from GTA as GTA blatantly stole plot from the Godfather, I still can''t think this would be a good game.

1. It''s EA. Other than sports titles, most people have no faith in them.

2. It''s a decades old IP. Sure it will appeal to some people but why go out of the way to license it when you could just create a new gangster setting. With this they will be constrained with what they can do with it in order to maintain continuity with the films. Not to mention the owner''s of the IP will proabbly have a say in what can and cannot occur in the game, just in order to maintain the value of their IP. It''s going to be like designing a game by committee, it''s just not a good idea.

3. Those who are familiar with the franchise will come into the game with too much baggage already. Actors won''t be the same, the plot will have to change in order to fit the game, etc. Players are going to enter into the game already skeptical and cynical; that''s not how you want your player base to approach your game.

The whole notion just seems odd to me. The execs over at EA have really odd notions as what to accept when games are pitched at them. It''s been this way for awhile. I suppose they thought with the success for the LOTR games, why not go ahead with a movie adaptation. Yet, as I mentioned before, Godfather is decades old, while LOTR is fresh on everyone''s minds. Just seems like the whole thing is a bad idea. I might be wrong, they could give it to one of their best teams and maybe something good will come out of it, but I doubt it.

I remember playing the Godfather III game on Amiga. It was made by Ubi or Ocean, I forgot. EA''s take on that certainly cannot be more mediocre than that. (However, Mafia''s the game to beat now.) Oh, how cool it would be if they made some mobster sim, kinda like Republic, but more accessible and longer lasting. Certainly not going to happen.

I''m sorry people, but this is like making an interactive game out of the pictures your mom has of you naked in the bathtub with your cousins when you were all 2 years old.

There''s some things you just don''t do. Making a game out of the Godfather is repulsive the way elderly women dyking out is repulsive. Is nothing sacred? What''s next, a horror movie about Jesus?

wait... scratch that last one.

I''m in that .1% that actually don''t like any of the godfather movies, and I think this is a shake your head at them type of scenario.

This is going to be a good thing, and here''s why.
The one area EA doesn''t make games in is the ""M"" category. That guy in the article is right, if they conquer that there''s no other developers left. However, since this will be such a colossal failure, EA will crawl out of the arena with their tail tucked between their legs. And they won''t take a stab at this genre again for a long, long time. The Godfather series was already tainted by part III, so pissing on its grave again won''t be too detrimental.

I have no problem with Gangster games. I think both GTA and Syndicate made good use of the genre. But this crap about using the Godfather IP hurts big time.

Viewing first two movies and/or reading the book should be mandatory before someone plays the game, just so their first exposure will not be crap.

I would like to see a new Mafia-based game in the business-sim model. Run the whole organization from the top. Kinda like Port Royale maybe.

Oh man I''d love to see that too. To really get into the *business* of organized crime. Not just drive to different crime lord''s houses and run their opponents off the road.

I could not agree more.

In fact i thought that was what Republic was going to be. (not that i didnt enjoy it). If you could combine the strategy elements of Republic with the gameplay and atmosphere of Mafia....oh, I''m getting teary eyed.

In the end Mafia will be a very hard act to follow.
