LiveMetallica Goes... well Live

Saw over at Heise news that Metallica is now offering recordings of their live shows. $10 a gig if it's MP3, $13 if it's in FLAC (which is lossless). Interestingly enough there are no kind of DRM restrictions and you're allowed to burn all that to CD as mentioned in the FAQ. Fascinating considering their past statements on online piracy.

Beware what you ask for, I see Ely peeking in.

Yeah, I admit I''m a bit surpised that they would do this.

Gee, maybe they see the success that bands like Phish, Gov''t Mule and Moe. have had with doing similar and want to jump on the band wagon? A little popularity booster perhaps?

All the richest bands in the world now make their money off of touring. Bruce Springsteen, Phish, Elton John. I''m pretty sure that Metallica just want to get in on that. they''ve suitably alienated their younger fan base now to the point that merchandising probably isnt worth the effort.
