AP announces another oil rig has expoded in the Gulf of Mexico
Thursday, September 2nd, 2010 - 10:52am
The rig is located off the coast of LA. Details are still scarce but the Coast Guard is sending vessels to investigate. Not a good year for offshore drilling it would seem.

That sounds a lot like socialism to me. Do you hate this country?

Is this actually more common than we are aware of and the big one just brought it to our attention or is this something extraordinary?

From my limited time in the maritime industry close calls are nothing new. But when a helicopter can see your on fire and report it, I don't think that's altogether common. Without a doubt the sensitivity regarding rigs after the BP accident is turned up to 11.
Edit: Per the LA Times.
"The Coast Guard said initial reports indicated all 13 crew members from the rig were in the water. One was injured, but there were no deaths.
The platform owned by Mariner Energy is in about 2,500 feet of water, the Coast Guard said, and was not currently producing."
The evacuation is an atypical, bad sign though. Typically you try to stay with the vessel as long as possible to facilitate SAR. If you abandon, you're usually doing so because the risk of staying on board is greater than drifting away at sea.

Apparently all the wells were shut down before the explosion, no reports of oil leaking.

I've got exploding oil well fatigue.
Yes, and in the early hours of the BP spill they told us that one wasn't leaking, either.

I'm reminded of the guy in the Glen Beck video from a thread or two over haranguing Obama for trying to put a moratorium on drilling in the gulf.

I'm going to wait for the full story before I go off. But doesn't matter what happens down there, those La. folks are still going to want to drill because they're isn't a whole lot else for them to do outside of fishin' and drillin'.
Yep. Now the Coast Guard says there's a mile long sheen spreading from the well.

Except lately it's been one or the other, not both.

True. I don't know how they work that out, but I probably will object to the solution, whatever it is.
Eh, that's just a baby leak. The well skinned its kneecap.
Honestly though, not kidding, that may not mean that it's a severe leak. It might be a very minor one. We won't know without further details and analysis.

Or it's an unrelated natural leak that just happened to crack open at a weird time. What a coincidence.

Seriously man, a very light sheen of oil spread over "a mile" could be the equivalent of a few barrels of oil. That would hardly classify as a big deal in that region.
I was and am still incensed over the whole mess with the major spill this spring. I'm certainly not going to be an apologetic for the oil industry. I'm just advocating we wait and see before getting into the panic and/or outrage stage. It's as much for myself to not overreact as anything else.

It was a processing rig, not a drilling rig. As such, there is no well spewing oil like the last disaster. Basically, any oil they had on hand (some 1500 barrels, if I heard correctly) was most likely lost.
I called it, just sayin'.
Now we're hearing that there was actually no sheen at all. I guess if we're talking thousands of barrels rather than millions it's not a huge deal anyway.

Give it time; I'm sure "somebody" will wreck another one of Charlie's cars.
