Tactical/war games where you play an individual?
Friday, August 13th, 2010 - 4:22pm
Can anyone recommend any good ones? I'm looking for a game where the meat of the gameplay is action-based (third/first-person swordplay or whatever), but you also get to make tactical decisions - whether that be in the planning stage or controlling squads/units on the fly.
I loved Brothers in Arms, but if it's out there I'm looking for something more large-scale, and preferably with swords and arrows!

Just off the top of my head - maybe the Overlord games? They're sort of a mix of 3rd person hack n' slash with some pikmin/RTS-lite gameplay.
Also, if you can dig them out of obscurity: 'Sacrifice' (wonderfully weird fantasy RTS where you control a wizard and the forces he summons up) or - going back even further - Battlezone (alternate cold-war-turned-hot fought on the Moon and Mars). I'm sure I'll eventually remember some more obvious recent ideas. Giants : Citizen Kabuto as well has some strategy stuff in there, but that's a whole crazy mix of all kinds of excellent nonsense and blue boobies
There's Brutal Legend of course, the main bulk of the gameplay there was actually a RTS-type affair mixed in with the open world hack n slash stuff.
I don't play them myself so I'm not sure if these count exctly but maybe DOTA games? I hear the communities for those tend to be unforgiving (to put it mildly) to newbies, however.

Sacrifice is more fantasy oriented but it's a spectacular game and still holds up really well. I really enjoy the voice acting as well.

Oh, of course there's also Mount & Blade. Bit on the hardcore side and it's rough around the edges but it's worth a look next time there's a steam sale.

I have actually played a few hours of Mount & Blade, but I seem to give up on it every time my party gets wiped out. Maybe I should give it another chance.
I played the hell out of Sacrifice when it was first out! In fact I was trying to think of its name in the last episode of the BoJcast (we mentioned Giants: Citizen Kabuto and I bought them both at the same time).
"Invalid target..." God that guy was patronising.

When I read the headline I thought you meant an online war game where you play one character on one side of the battle. Something along the lines of Star Wars Battlefront 2 with a squad/commander system. I have been waiting for a really good follow up to that game. Sadly, it may never come. Star Wars Battlefront 3 will always be my favorite piece of vaporware.

Sacrifice and Giants: Citizen Kabuto are awesome. Overlord is not. They really need to adapt the kind of gaming goodness that was Sacrifice and Giants: Citizen Kabuto into more of our modern games. If there were any games on the face of the planet that needed sequels... Can't believe it's been 10 years!
Men of War, seems like this may be close to what you want, and cheap. It's predecessor, Soldiers:Heroes of WWII is also at gog.com I believe.

I do love Battlefield though! So maybe I just need to keep playing Bad COmpany 2 and stop whining.
Valkyria Chronicles is on my PS3 pile of shame, to be played post-Red Dead. I'm thinking it's time to perhaps give Mount & Blade chance #12.

Second MoW. Available with expansion on Steam. Very enjoyable.

I've watched a couple of videos, it just looks like an RTS?

Yeah, it looks that way, but it's much more tactical. You're only given a certain amount of units and you have to use them wisely. There's no basebuilding, it's all about the units. You can get reinforcements in some missions, but most of the time what you have is what you get. There's some cool stuff in the game like the fact you can repair and take over any of the enemy tanks and vehicles for your own use. There's also a first person view where you can take over one unit and directly control them.
It's a great game, but it's not quite a war game. Real time tactical probably is a better description.
Edit: Expansion is stand alone, just to let you know.

Yeah MoW is cool because you can pick up enemy gear and eqpt and really tweak your guys to how you want to play. The early missions are pretty hectic, but dial the difficulty back and enjoy.

Well, there aren't really any tactics involved, but if you just want to shut your brain down and mash buttons through hordes of enemies, the Dynasty/Samurai Warriors series might fit the bill.
Also, didn't Dungeon Keeper allow you to take control of a single unit? It's not exactly what you're looking for, but still awesome if you can get it to run on modern hardware.

Vagrant Story on PS, if you can stomach (gorgeous) PS1 graphics.
The Armored Core series is very tactical, but scifi.
I think Mount & Blade should be right up your alley. It can be a bit hard to get into, but take it slow, and you should have a sizeable army in no time at all. Just turn down the difficulty until you're confident.

Well, these days, SWAT 4 seems as close as you can get. I am not even sure if you can find some of the original Rainbow Six games. Those were heavily tactical and planning focused.

Hey, I just wanted to thank you for posting that suggestion and video here. I had completely blown VC off somehow thinking it was just another JRPG --a genre I typically don't care for much at all-- but I grabbed it over the weekend after watching that video and am really enjoying it so far.
Thanks!

The request for swords and melee throws things off, because there are several with guns:
Rainbow Six
Ghost Recon (the original)
SWAT 3, SWAT 4
Operation Flashpoint
Hidden & Dangerous 2

That's a great little list so I have to say if you only pick one or two from this my favorites were Ghost Recon and SWAT 4.

Ahh Hidden & Dangerous. What a game.
I think I'm going back to Brothers in Arms first and I'll see where I go from there. I wish there were some good LOTR games out there. Close your eyes and imagine Gears of War with arrows and magic, and ordering battles of soldiers around. Mmmmm. Aww, f*ck you reality.

You know, there's also Take Command: Bull Run and the Gettysburg game from the same designer. Excellent Civil War tactical command, and you do play one person, a commander of whatever rank you've chosen (usually regiment or division or corps.) The game portrays the field in the first person, and you can set accurate orders delays if you like the challenge. The challenge lies in getting the right troops in the right quanitities to the right positions at the right time. And it's a lot harder than you'd think, but very engaging.
