Need new in Ear headphones
Tuesday, July 13th, 2010 - 3:42pm
A wire in my connector came loose and the left bud does not work.
As a result I am looking for a new pair of in ear headphones.
Any suggestions on ones that wont break the bank? Lets say under $30. I can go a little higher if its worth it.

I saw a good sale on the low end Klipsch Custom-1's this weekend for $24 at TigerDirect. They're single driver only so aren't as good as their higher end stuff, and Amazon reviews based on fit are mixed, but in your price range, they're probably as good as you'll find for under $30.
You get into a lot of good options as you get closer to $100. I've got some mid-range Etymotic and Shures, and like the Shures better for fit, but both sound pretty good. You can also get some better Klipsch in the $80 range, too (which I'm tempted to try next).

Wow those Klipsch headphones go for $130 at the J&R near me. Tiger direct is practically giving them away!

You might be looking at different model.
The are 49.99 from their website.
I use Sennheiser cx300 and I've been very happy with them.
They around 30ish. Lower or higher depending where.
Amazon dropped their price to $25 also. Might pick up a pair myself.
Actuall, those Sennheiser CX300's sound like a better deal. I like bass.

Amazon is showing the price of Tiger Direct (they aren't sold by Amazon themselves), so it's the same deal. Just like you can find the same deal on Circuit City's site, which is just a storefront by the same company that owns Tiger Direct.
The CX300's are just ear buds, not IEMs. I've had a set, they're OK, but a good IEM should be better.

IF you can find a pair on eBay (be wary of fakes), the Apple dual driver IEMs (referred to as ADDIEMs on head-fi) are one of the best that you can get for that price, for under $100 even.

I've got Klipsch Custom 2's and they have served me well for 2.5 years now. Yeah the Custom 1's are probably that cheap because they were the first gen ones. I'm not an audiophile so I will not comment on sound quality, but I like them a lot.

I have a pair of M-Audio IE-10's which are a re-branded pair of Ultimate Ear SuperFi 3's. They're pretty good headphones but I'm not sure about the fit, they can fit really well and then other times they're not very comfortables. I got them for under a hundred bucks CAD locally.
I also have a pair of Ultimate Ears MetroFi 170 which are really really comfortable and very reasonable price. There is also a 170 vi which has a microphone so it'd be good for using with an iphone. I got these for 50 from best buy, they might be something you're looking for. I think it's another 20 bucks for the pair with the mic.

Ah, yes, I missed that the Amazon seller was Tiger Direct.
Anyway, the Sennheiser CX300 II's are in-ear for $31, though there seems to be issues with getting fakes from 3rd party retailers.

Weird, they say they are in ear, and that's exactly what I had, but they really never seemed to fit in the ear canal and seal up for me like my other IEMs. I just always considered them ear buds+.

Did you have the II's or the older earbuds?

I think the IIs, but I wouldn't swear to it. They looked just like that pic. The cable wore out and I trashed them a few months ago.
Probably just my ears. What works for me might not work for you and vice versa, due to different sized ears.

I have the Sennheiser CX300-B earbuds and they do not fit well into my ears. They seem to large for my canals and if I work them inside they eventually work themselves out. Also they came with no shirt clip so any slight tug on the sticky rubber cable and they'll pull out of my left ear (asymmetric cable).

I ended up just ordering some of the Logitech SuperFi 5vi headphones... long story short I had a $50 gift card on Dell's website so I ended up getting them for $30. They seemed like the best I could get on that website. I really didn't want to get Logitech headphones, but the reviews are okay and they only cost me $30.
I've had Shure headphones before that have made it to the point where they are irreparable. If money weren't an issue, I think I would go for some of the Shure or Klipsch in-ear headphones in the $100 range.
If I remember, I'll post my thoughts on these SuperFi 5vi headphones when I get them next week.

Oh, and if anyone is in the market for a pair of Ultimate Ears SuperFi 3 studio's... I've got a pair of the drivers sitting around doing nothing, looking for a good home. All they need is the standard cable that fits any of the non-custom UE's.

They're made by Ultimate Ears which have been making headphones for a long time. They make profession IE monitors that you can get custom fitted, so you'll probably be pretty happy with the quality of them if you can get a good fit.
You have to watch out for the Shures, they have these consumer level ones SE210's that they sell in all the big box shops and they're horrible. I bought a pair after my E2C's finally died (First pair of IE's and they were awesome, wore them out after 5 years) they were just horribly sh*tty. If you wanted a decent pair you'd have to get the SCL2's which are at the low end starting around a hundred bucks but they've discontinued them.

As always, I'm going to vouch for Sennheiser CX-300s. I'm on my second pair and they've lasted in heavy daily use for over a year each. Great sound for the price, works real well if you're on the go. They form a perfect seal with my ears, provided I use the biggest rubber pads they come with.

I am not an audiophile, but I bought the Sennheiser CX-300 IIs based on recommendations from an older thread floating in the ether here, and loved them so much I promptly bought a pair for my brother in law (who is a bit more of an audiophile than I am); both of us absolutely love them.

I received the SuperFi 5vi headphones yesterday. So far I'm really happy with them. The sound quality and fit is on par with the Shures I used to have. It took a little testing to get a good fit. I went with the foam plugs. I recommend them if you have an iphone and can get them for cheap.

So I got the Klipsch headphones today and so far I am a bit underwhelmed. Maybe because they are very differerent than the usual in headphones I am used to. I am going to give it a couple days to feel them out more.
At one point I thought one ear wast working but it turned out that it was not pointed into my ear canal. The wrapping around the ear is a bit weird but lets see how they are over some time. The base is also not as vibrant as I expected. Maybe I am just using the wrong gel fitting.

I've found that foam rather than the gel type ear plugs tend to work a bit better. Gel types will keep the sound out a little better, I think, but they don't stay in quite as well when you move around.

In general, I've gotten to where I really like the wrap around cables on my Shures, and have started to wear my Etymotics that way. I mainly use my Sansa Clip+, and just drop the player down the back of my shirt and clip it to my front pocket to keep the cord totally out of my way.
Fit makes a big difference on IEMs. The wrong ear attachment can kill the sound (especially the bass). But since these are single driver, they just might not be that bassy.
Also, some say these things have to break in, others say it's a myth. So maybe in time it will improve.

Be very careful with bass in headphones. With regular speakers, you have the full-body slam that tells when you music is loud enough and/or too loud, and trying to duplicate that slam with just your ears is a good way to suffer hearing damage. You have to just hammer on very, very delicate membranes to even come close to the same feeling, and without the external feedback, listening way too loud is distressingly easy.
It's always best not to listen loud on headphones, particularly with bass, which carries the most energy of any part of the signal. Save your loud music for regular speakers... your middle-aged self will thank you profusely.

I'm cheap. The most I've ever spent on in-ear headphones is about $25 on a pair from Wal Mart. Are these $100+ jobs really that jaw-droppingly amazing? I listen to my mp3 player constantly while exercising and I'm just afraid of spending that much on headphones that I may tear up in a few months. Pulling the cords, getting them snagged, etc.

They do sound much better and last longer. They still will get trashed eventually if you use them every day. Half the appeal for me is the noise-isolation. On a long bus ride, I don't want to hear the outside world. I'd certainly say they're worth it if you use them every day.

If your looking for cheap amazing sounding headphones, get the Koss KSC-75's. Pound for pound the absolute best headphone you can buy. The are the wonder kid of the headphone world:

I am not a huge fan of the clip-on style headphone, but they sound so good you won't care.
They are often compared to the Sennheiser PX100's (another phenomenal sounding pair of headphones). I think the KSC-75's rival the Senns., though, in that the Koss have this very energetic presentation that the Senns. can't quite deliver without a small boost from a amp.
Anyway. Try the KSC-75's. It will be the best $15 you ever spend.

Used to use these all the time. Have some of the older style. One speaker is busted and I've been too lazy to take advantage of the warranty.
Wearing them for long ends up hurting my ears, though. Not sure if the new style improves that. And they still don't isolate like I like, hence the move to IEMs for me.
But a good buy for sure.

Maybe they don't drop your jaws, but they certainly do open your eyes. It's walking into a crisp night from a smoky bar... or getting your ears cleaned (which you should regularly do).

Well I found the bass. It took a lot of adjustment with the ear wrap and the gel size but its there. I was trying to twist it in the right spot and the headphone just fell in comfortably. Kinda feel like I have elf ears on though
