Guild Wars 2 Catch All

I've been enjoying my engineer since I switched from the little dude to the Charr, but I am kind of curious about Mesmer. Maybe I'll roll one up with the tree people.

I loved my mesmer, when i played constantly it was hands down my favorite. I used a confusion build which then was one of their weaker builds. I solo'd with a great sword because it was easy but mostly I did dungeons and WvW as a confusion based support role.

I hear confusion damage either received or is going to receive a huge bump. I am definitely going back to him at some point but have been putting it off because I am enjoying just bringing a new guy up and I am not in the mood to researching a new build yet. I do use him for jumping puzzles for portal use. I spend some time with the newish puzzle yesterday (Not So Secret) and quit after an hour or so. it pretty hard, its the only one I haven't done though. I'll get through it eventually.

but the tree people are secret Mordremoth minions!

DD Eles(ie: Dagger/Dagger Elementalists) are super fun and very popular, not sure why a guide would recommend doing Dagger/Focus, the case for using Focus is super super narrow.

Staff is probably the better learner's weapon for Eles as it lets you stand back, whereas DD forces you jump into the action and careen around like a pinball of fiery death. it's really fun, but the difficulty is higher =)

Using the guides linked a couple pages back.

And pretty much everything else I googled from the forums and other sites. Everything recommends dagger/focus as the best PvE.

I don't get it myself because off hand dagger gives you another aoe fire field, which is great for stacking burn and triggering blast combos and building might and stuff. I have a great opening rotation with Burning Speed, Ring of Fire, switch to Earth, Arcane Blast and Earthquake, and boom I have a bunch of might and most stuff is dead or nearly dead. Then I go to Lightning for the strongest auto attack.

I tried out scepter main hand and focus off hand and several variations, but nothing clicked as well as the two daggers for me. Did try staff for a few levels, but being at range doesn't seem like a good idea in this game, in general. Especially since elementalist can't just switch weapons like everyone else, and pop off some ranged shots.

I think trait guides are a waste of gold... if there's something you really want, look up on the wiki how to run around and get it for "free".

Yeah I stumbled on those. But some of the good ones that are recommended don't seem to be unlockable for me until level 70+.

I made it to 25 the last few days, but of course there was some xp bonus Sat-Sun. Feels like it could be weeks before I'm that high, so grabbing a trait or two might be nice.

Yeah, I like just randomly grouping up and running around. I'm not usually online with most people, but will group up for pve and WvW any time.

Once you newer guys get to level 30 you must check out WvW. It can be a lot of fun.

I'm at level 65 and find WvW to be confusing. Not sure what I should be doing. I've been told that winning is not the objective, but simply to train for PvP. Should I just assume that our server is no longer interested in trying to win the war.

For me the best thing in WvW is playing in a small group and running around taking camps and attacking supply dolyaks. Hit and run stuff. I don't particularly like the bigger encounters.

As for mesmers, my second level 80 is my little asura Mesmer and I love it. Greatsword main with sword/pistol off hand. Mesmer was a cool and interesting class in GW1 too.

I don't know nearly enough about this world to get this joke. I demand explanations!

It's part of the lore connected to the new areas (not the expansion, just the two new parts of the jungle). I haven't done the story chapter yet, I only know enough to make rude generalizations

Two questions for the hivemind, if I may:

1) Quite often now I will be searching for Waypoints or Points of Interest in low level areas, and then get ambushed by monsters at least ten levels lower than I am. They are surprisingly fierce and durable, and sometimes, if I am fighting multiple mobs, they can really tear me apart. As a lobgtime player of WoW, this really takes some getting used to for me. What am I missing?

2) Can you not sell Soulbound armor/weapons to anyone? I'm confused about what armor you can sell at the Market, what armor you can sell at the Merchant, and what armor you simply need to destroy.

Thanks much!

As a fellow n00b, I can answer #1. Look at the bottom left corner of the screen, where it shows your level. When you're in a lower level zone, there's a green arrow pointing down, and showing the current level the game has reduced you to. It keeps you within 1-2 levels of the proper level for that zone, so that you can always get xp for doing those zone events, or team with low level friends, lots of cool reasons.

Someone else please explain #2 to me as well.

When you go into lower level areas, your effective level scales down to match that of the area. You can see your effective level in green at the bottom left corner of your screen.

Until you have a more developed build, with traits and tuned gear, it's always going to be a bit risky to over aggro mobs of any level.

Soulbound equipment cannot be sold on the TP but can usually be sold to merchants, unless it was a Karma(and possibly story mission) reward, which can't be sold to anyone.

That's what was tripping me up. Some stuff I could sell. Other stuff I ended up just using the destroy option. Also I got some items to recover scrap and give me crafting resources. But I can only seem to use those on trophy items, I can't get it to actually break down any of these items that I can't sell, so I end up destroying. Really seems like a waste.

Yeah, what Gma said. Soulbound can't be sold on the Trading Post or moved to another character, but you might be able to salvage it or sell it to an NPC vendor.

Account Bound is the same, except you can bank it and give it to one of your other characters on the same account.

Some things are unrestricted until you use them, then they become Soulbound or account bound. You'll either get a warning pop-up or see a "x-bound on use" note. These items are usually cool armor or weapons. Hover over it in your inventory to see the stats... it will compare the item to what you have equipped, and you can decide whether to bind it so you can use it, or just sell it on the TP for extra scratch.

Apparently there was a patch this morning. I'm so used to Steam auto-patching it was a shock when I sat down to play after lunch and the game isn't immediately ready to go.

Just a warning to anybody else tonight. Not big, 104mb.

A lot of the random little things that can't be sold or salvaged are quest items for nearby gold hearts on the map.

Ya it's just a small balance patch with a few fixes.

Overall good info.

Additionally, try to make sure you havent outlevelled your gear by too much. Check your armor and weapons and if it's more than 5-8 levels behind, go ahead and upgrade it. It does make a difference.

I caught a reference in one of the trailers for the expansion. Rytlock says something along the lines of not trusting Sylvari because they belong to the dragon. So I just made a bit of a leap myself.

With this balance patch, it looks like Confusion focused Mesmer might be a thing again. Time to pull out my "pretty princess wand" scepter as main-hand and my rapier as off-hand.

They're trying to make Confusion relevant in PvE but I don't think the change in this patch will have much of an impact. The problem isn't really with the scale of any of the numbers, it's that it rarely ever triggers more than 0-1 times.. and that's a mob AI issue more than anything else.

The best solution I could come up with would be to alter the PvE behaviour of the condition to be a mix of how Chill and Torment work: it should increase cool downs, slow down activation times, have a DoT effect during channeled skills and then a damage spike on activation.

$10 sale newbie here! I'm all of 15 minutes into the game so far, but hoping to have more time to play later this week. It would be awesome if I could get a guild invite! WolverineJon.8543

Well there are a couple of angles to the issue. The main one as I understand is that PvE mobs dont actually have proper auto attack chains, everything they do is skills and cooldowns. That has the net result that confusion only triggers very rarely as you indicate. I dont know that it's actually an AI thing more than a mob design thing.

Oh, I hope this works out. I'd love to build a Meteorlogicus because they look neat, but it would be a waste of effort the way things are balanced right now.

Finally got sick of WoW pvp and cancelled my sub...hopefully for the last time, lol. Anyway, trying to download GW2 but the installer hangs after a minute or 2. Anyone else run into that problem?

Edit: nevermind, seems to be working now.

Bumping to not end up with two general GW2 threads.

This thread also wasn't tagged with Guild Wars 2 like the guild thread, builds thread, etc. I forgot the other day when I searched to tag it, but just did now.

Oh man, update client crashed 3x already and still 6000 files left on today's patch :S

May I have an invitation to the GWJ guild? I'm Archangel.9812. Thanks!
