Metroid: Other M Catch-All

Pages

A gameplay trailer was released today and I have to say, I wasn't expecting it to look this good.

From the previews I've read this looks like it will be quite interesting. I don't recall anything about all the extra acrobatics, if they're quick time events or not, but I can't imagine they're not.

Anyone else looking forward to this more every time they see something about it, like me?

I was prepared for something good when I heard it was by Team Ninja. Looking at the trailer, I would think they will not let anyone down. It looks, well, DAMN! Samus is badass in this one!

I like the speed of the gameplay. It reminds me of speed-running through Super Metroid.

Not sold on the art direction though. It's got that classic Team Ninja glossy highlights / generic architecture look.

Should be interesting either way.

Looks good, I look forward to buying it. Although I enjoyed both my Prime purchases (1 and 3) I've been looking forward to some significant game play changes in order to keep the franchise feeling fresh to me. I've heard people nitpicking over the sound of Samus's voice and such, but cut-scenes aside, I think the game-play looks solid. I hope it's as fun as it looks.

Looks sweet, will definitely be buying (unless the reviews are cruddy)

(I assume Other M is a play on Mother)

Wow! This is definitely on my instant buy list. It looks awesome!

Yeah... I keep thinking I'll pick this up eventually, since I don't really play console games much these days anyway, and then I see something like that video and think "Day 1 purchase. Hell yes." I like the physicality of it; the grabs and throws, grabbing and hanging from ledges, that thing she did putting the monster in a headlock and then blasting it, that sort of thing. It's not exactly groundbreaking as far as games in general go, but it's new to Metroid anyway. It gives a much better sense of just how badass Samus is.

That's interesting, didn't even notice.

And yah, I was skeptical after hearing about it on podcasts and seeing the first trailer, but hot damn does that one look good. Day one.

Looks good, but something about how they're using 2D in the 3D space just isn't grabbing me. Doesn't mean I wouldn't buy it if I owned a Wii - quite likely would.

After Armored Core: For Answer I've stopped making those assumptions.

I had this pre-ordered when it was first announced. Nintendo has yet to do a bad Metroid game in my opinion.

I just watched the Gametrailers Pop-Block of the gameplay trailer and they pointed out, you get to change the direction you are traveling based on where you look in the 3D mode. Somehow I had forgotten about this / or never really knew. But the fact that they did it in an open swamp area was pretty cool.

I think that's just their guess based on how it looks in the trailer. When I first saw it, I just thought it was showing off how you switch between third/first person view. There are other sequences in the trailer where Samus changes direction without looking in 1st person.

In case anybody missed it, this game has been delayed until August 31st, and along with it, Sin & Punishment 2 was delayed to come out exactly the same day Metroid was originally slated for, June 27th.

So the game's coming out at the end of the month anybody else getting this?

I have mine on pre-order. Seems like this might be a good time to remind people that Amazon.com has it for $50 with a $20 credit.

Yes. Yes I am.

Although we get no such good credit deals from Amazon UK so I'll just grab it in a store when it's out.

I'm a little concerned about it. Things I've seen in person and heard from people who have played it more were not garnering the kind of excitement you would hope for.

It's pre-ordered. Like Certis, I've heard some word-of-mouth things that make me a little bit worried about the game, but I'm honestly just trying to go into the game with an open mind. In my experience, the Metroid games don't demo all that well because their appeal really lies in the amount of time you spend exploring the world and unlocking abilities. However, I'm also trying to remind myself that this one isn't going to be like the other Metroid games and to just roll with that.

Edit: All that said, this game is going to live or die based on its camera and controls. The design they've chosen just doesn't leave much room for error there.

Press event for it this week. Figure I'll make up my mind then, but the $20 credit is very tempting.

Hands-on preview at IGN.

Highlights:

One thing I learned about Metroid: Other M in this hands-on play: if you're in a room that has a hidden pick-up (missile, a piece of an energy tank or a full energy tank), you'll be alerted of its existence once you clear out the room of all enemies. A beacon "ping" can be heard, and it's up to you to find out where it's hiding.
The game will be heavy on story, acted out in cutscenes that utilize the game's realtime engine. When you load a save file, you'll be given a summation of the story so far as the game loads, recapping everything you've seen and done up to that point.
My demo was admittedly very short so I didn't get much of a chance to savor the moments, but I will say that the game, while visually strong, has a very "clunky" feel to it that hasn't gone away since my last hands-on. [...] And while I can appreciate the Wii pointer control for first-person mode, it feels awkward to jump in and jump out constantly – not to mention that you can't move around while you're looking through Samus' visor -- only rotate from the spot that you were standing in when you jumped into first-person mode.

It also felt like the game plays itself a lot of the time due to its auto-targetting system. When you run into a room filled with enemies, you can simply point Samus in their direction and simply fire away and know that they'll be taken down by random blaster shots.

I have a sneaking suspicion that I won't like it as much as I liked Super Metroid or Metroid Prime.

That bit about the noise when you're near a powerup was there in Prime, also. Not sure about Super Metroid (played that with sound off).

I don't recall a sound indicating hidden items in Prime. I'd feel weird if I simply didn't notice them in my playthroughs.

It's not a beacon per se, but when you're in the vicinity of a missile upgrade or energy tank you can hear a low thrum that they give off.

Okay, I do remember that. It sounds like the noise in Other M is something that sounds whenever you're in an empty room with an item in it, like an audio version of the question marks on the map in Shadow Complex.

The same could be said of a great many games.

Some bits of info. Evidently the game has so much in it, it had to be trimmed to fit on a dual-layer DVD.

"Purple armor is too silly for how serious this game is. Make Samus glow purple instead! Purple needs to be involved; gravity is purple, dammit!"

But Metroid Prime 2: Echoes taught us darkness and evil were purple. I'm confused!

No purple gravity suit! An insult!

YAY next week!
