How soon do you rage?

Alan Titchmarsh was the presenter of a now defunct gardening show here in the UK and after thankfully disappearing off our screens appears to have returned with his own chat show.

The latest one was another of the OH MY GOD VIDEO GAMES ARE BAD pseudo-debates. It is truly cringeworthy stuff.

Watch the following video, then post in this thread how far you got before the seething, violent rage overtook you and you broke into her house to murder her and her family stopped the video.

I got as far as 2:06, and still can't work up the will to finish watching it. Aaargh. Why do people still think like this?

Watched all of it. I feel bad for the old, scared people who are too busy decrying that video games are bad (think of the CHILDREN!!) to listen to what Tim Ingham (spelling?) had to say. I think they're struggling for relevance in a field that they don't understand, which has mostly left them behind.

0:23 and I just gave up before I wasted any more of my time with that trash. If it's the sort of argument I think it was going to be, it's just to reinforce their own views and convince themselves they're right, and feel comfortable with their scapegoat to blame for societies ills. If I missed out on a challenging, thought-provoking, balanced discussion, it's a small loss to me, there's plenty more in the world.

Its worse than you think, Scratched. I give some credit to McKenzie (I struggled to type that) for at least pointing out what the average age is. I think McKenzie actually play games himself and I do think he does have something of a point to make about the realism of the violence. Of course that discussion got drowned under top notch tabloid fodder.

I think there's a debate to be had about video games and violence, I don't think daytime TV is the place for it if you want to get anything constructive out of it. I think my main problem with 'shows like these' is that there's no commitment to discussion, but that the topic is there because it's the trendy thing to discuss, the reason it's on the show at all is that it gets viewers. While I'm making sweeping generalisations I'd add that it lets the presenters, panellists and viewers exert their self-righteousness and throw stones at the bogeyman that's warping the fragile minds of the nation's youth (as if that's the only cause. HELLO P&C!).

1:13. The guy hosting is ridiculously oblivious to the fact that last time I checked, games are rated like movies.

I feel sorry for them all, especially the gaming writer who got tricked into coming onto the show. The audience was against him no matter what he said. I feel sorry for the blond woman for her willful ignorance. I feel sorry for the old guy because he was trying to have a balanced discussion.

Actually, I don't feel sorry for the host - he just kept trying to get a juicy sound bite that could be taken out of context - kudos to the games writer for carefully phrasing his replies.

Pseudo-discussions like this have been on TV her in Germany for almost a decade now. You can't help it. The elder generations will always have a certain disconnection with the younger generations and fail to see their doings as worthwhile. It's a conflict as old as civilization itself.

"Our youth now love luxury. They have bad manners, contempt for authority; they show disrespect for their elders and love chatter in place of exercise; they no longer rise when elders enter the room; they contradict their parents, chatter before company; gobble up their food and tyrannize their teachers."

In the US retailers are fairly strict about T+ enforcement. I've seen people get carded for M rated games. This is all comedic to me...the grandstanding of an uninformed generation.

No rage. How far did the same old people get in chasing off D&D or heavy metal? They sure did a good job putting the brakes on Iron Maiden, who have had to suffer with only 100 million worldwide album sales.

I don't think I've ever seen a crowd cheer the 'anti-game' party before. Still, the only one of them who seemed truly ignorant was the 'Think of the children!' lady, and the host was maybe pandering to the crowd a little.

Ignorance in such a public display and so unbiased! I feel more contempt than rage. If people choose to remain uninformed so be it. In the end, they're just talking to hear themselves talk and nothing will come of it. If you can't take the time to talk to your kids about games, learn how to lock a console, and check in to see what they're doing...you're failing as a parent. Today, it's always someone else's fault...

The one thing that really pissed me off about this was, as stated before me, the ignorance and obvious bias. Not only for the most part did the hosts, apart from the one arguing for video games, seem to have it out for video games but also that the crowd seemed to not want to hear a debate about games but to just have their anti-video game ideas verified.

Watched all, out of twisted curiosity. Fear is easier than understanding, and the human being is lazy by nature (cliche double whammy). In this discussion, why isn't the first question always "why, as a parent, would you allow your children to access violent content, independent of the medium involved?"

It seems everybody (yes, I know it's not everybody) is always trying to have their kids grow on autopilot. What about the part where parents actually get involved in what their kids are doing? Usually it's that bit that actually keeps them out of harms way and close to family.

Oh, and @hooker-like lady: the kids became aggressive after playing violent games for many hours because they were doing the same crap for so long. Heck, when I work many hours, sure as rain, I get pissed off. OMG, work makes people violent! Let's ban work!

0:21, when the only titles mentioned have violence in the title, I don't think there is going to be a fair hearing about the games industry being "patted on the back for it's creative genius".
