Lead & Gold: Gangs of the Wild West Catch-all

So I see Steam just posted a new game coming soon. It's a TF2 style game from the looks of it, based in the wild west. 4 classes to choose from, team-based gameplay, and only $15 to buy. 6 maps and 5 game modes at the moment.

Also if you pre-order you get 10% off, so $13.50, and access to the beta.

Looks interesting, I don't know if it will replace TF2 or any other team-based game, but looks like it could be fun to play.

Team Gameplay Interview

The Team Gameplay video is interesting, as the interviewee talks about how they want to appeal to FPS players but also MMO players, so they've included a lot of aspects familiar to MMO's. HP damage pops up, XP, money, etc. Also, he is stressing how team-oriented the game is, so you will need to work together to succeed.

Lead & Gold on Steam

Also set to be released on PSN and Xbox as well.

It's ABSURD how many games are coming out that I want to play.

I'm going to have to quit my job to devote more time to them.

Same. I hope the game doesn't fail and has a fun and lasting MP experience. At least good enough to keep me busy until Brink comes out.

Just saw this when I launched Steam tonight. I'm definitely intrigued. I get together with a small group of friends for a LAN party every few months and we regularly spend an hour or so goofing off with the Fistful of Frags Source mod. This looks like a much more polished option.

I don't know if I'll buy it right now, but if a bit of a GWJ group starts, I could probably plunk down the $15 for it.

TF2 with cowboys. Looks like good fun, but only if you could play exclusively with goodjers. If a solid GWJ contingent were to form around this I'd definitely buy it. With all the multiplayer hotness that's been released recently I'll be surprised if enough people add this one to the pile for that to happen.

Well, I'll be buying it most likely. But I'm broke and out of luck right now so I'll probably wait until next month. The game uses Steamworks, does this mean the multiplayer will use the L4D p2p/dedicated server model? Because most of you are probably from the US.

Update: http://forums.leadandgold.com/showthread.php?tid=67&pid=514#pid514

Quote:
The game does not have p2p network model, but exactly how servers are going to be handled on steam isn't completely finalized yet, so I can't say. There is an ingame server browser though.

The amount of maximum players on each team is also very much a late decision as it is dependant on how well network optimizations go. On PC it might also very well be changed in future patches as patching steam games is very much easier than patching on consoles.

Quote:
Currently the game is max 5v5. It might be incresed put probably by very much as the current levels doesn't hold very much more than that (it gets too chaotic, we've tried it).

If you create a game as a private lobby you can invite all your friends, have them join your team and then publish it as a public game.

Thanks for the info liquid. 5v5 seems a little small for a team-based MP only game.

Same, Fat Shark are ex-Grin guys. All the videos and hands-on from press indicate a good game. I think I'll wait a week to decide so I can get some solid opinions from the beta.

Hmm...with teams that small, have they included roles that are suited for those of us with..ahem...slower reaction speeds? Otherwise, it could be really tough to balance teams.

I'm not sure Cod. From the gameplay videos, it looks relatively fast-paced, but not the craziest FPS you'll play. Actually when you are wielding those gun power barrels, it looks slow.

I've been eyeing this one for a while now too. I really want to put down the $13.50 and get it, so maybe with a little encouragement from you guys I could go for it. Looks like it could be a helluva good time.

This video of gameplay from the beta looks like it should be pretty fun.

Well I took a chance and bought it. I don't think I'll be buying many more games in the near future, so I figured an online game that could hopefully have some longevity might be a good investment. I'll post some impressions after I get in-game.

I've had no doubts about this game being fun, but is it great enough to receive my limited gaming bucks?

I just got it downloaded, so I'll let you know. I just played through the practice, so I've learned how to play... first not so good sign though, when the bot spawned, I sniped him and the game crashed....

We'll see how the actual on-line game is

Demo Pirate
Citizen86's picture

Okay so I've played a few rounds. Mostly standard deathmatch called Shootouts. Also a bit of Conquest, which is the same as TF2's Control points.

So far, I'd say that it is fun, and there is a lot of potential here. It's not a TF2 killer, but it has the ability to be a competitor, everything considering. It's relatively easy for the game to crash... Although I just played a few rounds and it was solid, so it might be random.

The four characters/classes are pretty interesting. It's nice to have different ranges that each character is good at. I've been playing either the Trapper and the Gunslinger. I really enjoy the Gunslinger because he has a six-shooter, and his special ability is Fanning, which means rapid-fire. You lose accuracy, but when you are close to an enemy you can pump him full of lead real quick. Good fun.
The trapper is the sniper, and also has the ability to set traps. I haven't seen any of mine sprung yet, but I stepped into one. It holds you for a good 5 seconds.

One big drawback right now, is no chat whatsoever. You can set a button to activate text chat, but it doesn't work in-game... so... unless you have some friends on Ventrilo or something else, you ain't talking to anybody. Can be a bit of a problem in a team-based game. If a few of us Goodjers got on Ventrilo, we'd probably dominate any pub right now.

So, so far it seems fun, although can be buggy. The animations are smooth enough, although not amazing. I haven't really gotten stuck in geometry anywhere yet, which is a good sign. Lag can be a bit of a problem though. Oh yes, and one other big gripe: No pings or latency or any sign of how the game is going to run. Just enter and guesstimate whether it's playable or not. There aren't a ton of servers to choose from either, so I know I've missed a few shots due to lag so far.

So it might be a potential risk to buy the game, but then again, it's only $15, hahaha.

I've seen all those tech concerns addressed on their forums. They say they should be gone by launch. They're really active there. Love seeing that.

Another crash! I got an achievement for killing 3 in a row. Apparently that causes a crash.

Quote:
Barrage
Kill 3 enemies within 12 seconds using fanning

Other things I've noticed: No ammo. There is reloading, but no having to worry about running out. I think I like this, it helps to keep the pace of the game going. When you don't run out of ammo, no need to run off from a battle to try and find more.

Another thing that's pretty interesting: moveable spawn points. Basically, at your teams main spawn point, there is a flag. Someone can pick up the flag, and carry it with them, and it effectively becomes the new spawn point. When that person dies, they drop the flag, freeing it for another teammate to pick up or if someone on the opposing team touches it, it goes back to the original spawn point. Pretty clever idea, helps to get people into the action quicker. It also makes for some pretty frantic moments, when you are trying to get rid of the enemies flag, but someone spawns and picks it up, then you have to deal with them... then another...

What else.... I am enjoying the synergies. It's a pretty cool teamplay technique. If you are low on health, find a Blaster teammate and have health restored.

It's still in beta, so some crashes are to be expected. If they can get it stable and a few of the other bugs worked out, I think it can be an awesome game.

Edit: Alright, the crashes are getting a little frustrating. I hope they get it stable soon
Edit2: I revived a teammate. That gave me another achievement. So it seems like it's for sure every achievement you get causes a crash. Guess I'll have to not try so hard now.

Edit3: Oh yes, the other gameplay aspect: COD4 style supposed-to-be-dead but drop-to-ground-with-pistol-until-put-out-of-misery gameplay. It makes it more interesting though that you can be revived again by a teammate and not have to respawn. I do like that they've done quite a lot of things to keep the game fast and furious.

I'm definitely going to pick this up. I have a mostly weekly game night with three friends, I think this will fit the bill nicely. Hopefully they fix all the tech issues. Thanks for the on the spot reporting Citizen.

I played some more before going to bed last night. Steam says I've put 2 hours into it now. I turned off the Steam overlay to see if that would avoid the crash during an achievement, but I didn't get any so I'm not sure if it's going to help.

I played one mission type called Robbery I believe. It's pretty fun, one team defends a bank with bags of gold inside. Other team first has to find a keg of gunpowder to blow open a big safe, then drag one by one back to their base bags of money. The other mission type I played Powderkeg, where once side again takes kegs of gunpowder to sites A and B to try and blow them up.

Team chat is really needed, either text or voice. It's amazingly frustrating to be lying on the ground waiting for someone to heal you, and have a teammate run right by you. Or a teammate run right beside the flag and not pick it up. Very frustrating. I think that once people learn the mechanics of the game, it'll be pretty interesting and fun.

Oh, and when a game gets full, 5v5, it doesn't seem small. The maps are made so that areas are relatively small and there are buildings or enclosed areas. It actually seems pretty decent so far. So no real complaints about the size of the maps and games.

I picked this up over the weekend as well. Played through the training tutorial and then did a couple of online quickplay matches. I didn't really encounter any crashes (but probably didn't play for more than 45 minutes). I did notice a bit of lag and during the training I respawned and got stuck on geometry two times - all stuff that's understandable in a beta.

I like the feel of it though I fear one or two of the classes may be overpowered/overplayed relative to the others (I saw alot of Gunslingers and Blasters). Definitely needs some voice chat for coordinating teamwork (the pub matches I played were pretty free-form without much obvious understanding of the objectives beyond shoot the other guys).

To have any legs the developer is going to have to support this game (I could see the content they've released so far wearing thin after several solid sessions of playtime). But I like where they're headed with this and hope it picks up a following. I'm up for any GWJ group play if others are interested.

So you didn't crash after your first kill? That's good, you must not get the crash after every Steam achievement like I do. Are you on Win7?

Edit: Patch 0.4 is available now. Adds in text chat, whew! Fixes a lot of crashes as well. Didn't fix the Steam achievement crash though, that's tomorrow apparently. They turned off achievements though, so that's nice. Don't think I'll have time to play tonight, maybe tomorrow afternoon.

I picked this up earlier today and just played it for about 30 minutes... it looks really promising. Works excellently with the 360 controller as well.

Add me and we'll get some nice GWJ action going on.

http://steamcommunity.com/id/-Spike-

Edit #1: So I've played for about 3 hours so far. They've implemented text chat. I would say that if this got voice chat, then it could be an extremely addictive strategy capture-the-flag(gold) with Call of Duty/Halo-like online play. I think it's a riot... if you like the 'old west' at all and you're looking for a new, fresh, fun third person shooter with a very good-looking upside in terms of multiplayer and potential DLC options in the future, then I would recommend this for you team-based strategy nuts out there.

Yea, I didn't experience any crashing after kills or achievements (though I think all the achievements I got were in the training mode versus on a MP server). I did have one game drop due to loss of server connection but that's not too surprising. I'm running it on Win7 as well. Sounds like they're actively patching stuff in on the beta though so that's promising.

I'll "friend you up" Citizen and hopefully we'll get something going at some point (my availability tends to be pretty limited - all this "family" and "work" stuff seems to take priority ). If we had a GWJ only group Vent would work well as a temporary voice chat solution until they enable it in-game (I run a vent server for my gaming group which I'd be happy to make available for anything we get going).
