New sneaky adware

Just thought I would let you all know that there is a new adware app that somehow got into my computer tonight. I was going to change my desktop background and when I was going through the .bmp images on my harddrive one spawned a pop-up ad. Having just checked my computer a couple of nights ago with ad-aware and finding nothing I thought that was impossible, so I ran ad-aware again and once again it found nothing. I then updated ad-aware's definitions and it had an update for todays date, and whatayaknow, there were 4 problem areas this time I did a scan. 1 of every type.

The program is called pup.exe but it can have many different names, and it somehow bypasses any confirmation prompt when it is installed, so even if you click No, or ALT+F4, or even CTL+ALT+DEL and end all internet explorer windows, it is too late once the prompt has come up. The latest update of Ad-aware seems to have taken care of it for me, but some people had problems with it not wanting to leave them alone. I found this thread if anyone wants to know more about it:

More info

Just figured since this one is so sneaky I might make you all aware of it, hopefully nobody else has to deal with it.

Don''t want to preach here, but you could worry a lot less about this kind of programs if you used browsers like Firefox.

Oooo, I''ve always loved the tabbed browsing in Mozilla. I''ll have to see what else this browser is up to.

Great browser.

Firefox is great, though it''s a stupid, stupid name . Opera would also work. Or any of those IE shells that lets you turn off ActiveX for that matter like Avant Browser or MyIE2. Just anything but plain IE!

I love Avant.
Spyware sucks.
SO does IE.

Thanks for the tip on Firefox. What a sweet browser! Finally got me off of the IE wagon for good. I love how the extensions work.

Thanks again.

Is Firefox a thought-controlled browser? If so, can it handle English thought or only Russian?

OK, all this talk of firefox and I had to get it. It does indeed kick ass, it''s what IE should be. Everything I want, nothing I don''t. Fo sheezy.

I am now browsing GWJ for the first time using Firefox. I already don''t like the fact that the cursor hovers over the letter you are typing. I typed 2 ""i''s"" and didn''t know it. Anyone know a fix?

Was using Firebird (Now known as Firefox) exclusively but got tired of constantly having to switch to stinky old IE everytime I went to certain sites, like my online banking site that are only setup to work with IE.

On the other hand, the email client, Thunderbird rocks. Makes Outlook look like a bad joke.

I am using the new firefox as well. The only problem I am having with it so far is when I go to NFL.com.

It keeps reloading the pages and won''t stop. Anyone else have this problem with this browser?

Thanks for the tip on Firefox. I had never heard of it until now. I usually don''t have problems with IE since most pages are designed for it, and I am normally smart enough not to let things get installed on my pc that I don''t want (last night was the first time anything I didn''t intentionally install on my pc got installed, and it was really sneaky).

I''ll have to give Firefox a shot tonight

Since this is a alternative browser love-in here''s some Firefox extensions. Flash click to view is the greatest extension in the history of mankind.

I was about to post the extension link but you too fast.

The games extension contains spider solitaire which is great because now my fiance won''t get on my machine to just play that damn game! I installed Firefox and the games extension on her PC during lunch so she will be our software tester for this.

All-in-one Gestures seems to be the most popular.

You can do lots of cool things like go back a page just by holding down the left mouse button and moving the cursor to the left. Pretty cool.

Browsing with Firefox right now.

I used Mozilla about a year ago but got frustrated with it. So far, going through Firefox''s options and extensions, I''m quite pleased with it and it will likely become my main browser!

I think I''m going to hold off on Firefox until they fix some of the bugs. I can''t select a page from my history unless I hold the mouse button down and release on the page I want. Hovering over links and other things doesn''t work, the link will flash and then return to normal state. I installed the Flash plugin, and then most pages wouldn''t load up. I can''t always go back, as I get a File not found error from the browser.

Other than that, it''s nice and the tabbed browsing is a plus.

Wow mumford, I don''t think I''ve seen that many bugs in the last 4 versions of Firefox/bird/Phoenix combined. Your luck sucks

Yeah, what can I say. When it works I like it, it''s nice and fast. But those little bugs just annoy the hell out of me. I''ll be keeping my eye on the release versions to see when the next one comes along, and I''ll give that a try.

I am still using it right now, so I may just ignore the little issues I''m having with it because it is pretty nifty.

I''m sticking with IE as long as I''m stuck with Microsoft anyway. I don''t browse all that much usually, and I have Spybot and Ad-Aware for the rare times I do.

I had the same issues as you. It is nice being able to get away from Microsoft, but as with Gorack, when I really want to get away from Microsoft I just reboot into Linux and I can use several different flavors of Mozilla there to browse. I may just install the google toolbar at home and stick with IE for now. I''ll keep my eye on Firefox though.

Yeah, I took the time to actually install Linux and configure it so that I could hit my file and print server from it. It''s basically got everything that I need to work from day to day. The only thing that bugs me is that it just acts funky from time to time. I''ll be working on something and then my mouse will stop functioning. Or it''ll change the theme on me. Nothing too terrible, but annoying never the less.
