Recommend me a new Video card
Wednesday, March 17th, 2010 - 1:56pm
Hi all!
Well, it's sadly starting to look like my 2 7900GTOs running in SLI are no longer up to the task with modern games. I'd like to replace them with 1 card with better performance with the capability to run dual monitors. I'd like to keep it under or just around $150.00 for the upgrade, but I'm open to suggestions at all price levels.
I just don't have the patience to do all of the research this time around. Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance!

Tom's Hardware Best Video Cards for the Money says a 5770 will give you what you want in your price range. The 5770 is pretty similar to the last generation's 4870, but will support DX11 eyecandy.

This is kind of a bad time. We're due for a product release of some kind and potential price drops within the next month or two.

Awesome..thanks for the advice, guys. The "new stuff is just around the corner" is just the kind of thing that I wouldn't have known about. Appreciate it!

Yeah, Nvidia's big new chip is supposed to show up sometime soon. It's being shown at PAX East. It's release should bring on some price drops on ATI's cards.
Unless it sucks, in which case ATI will giggle with glee and leave their pricing as is.
I've been eyeballing the 5870 myself for a few weeks now, but I'm going to wait for the new Nvidia release before I really think about buying anything.

With the extra time, I'll keep saving. With another 100 bucks or so, the 5870 looks to be an option. If I remember right, Thin_J, both of us bought our 7900's at the same time...only I've never upgraded them:)
I *might* need a new motherboard, however...I'm pretty sure mine is only 8x PCIE, as the 16Xs weren't available when I built my system. (sigh...the curse of the PC gamer:)

What resolution are you running, Fanatka, and do you plan to upgrade it anytime soon?

I'm running 1920 by 1080, and unless this monitor dies soon, no plans for upgrading:) Thanks!

Ok, at that resolution, a 5850 will work very nicely. A 5770 would be a little too anemic to drive that many pixels very well.
Holding off a bit wouldn't be a bad idea. It's looking fairly likely that the new NVidia parts won't be that good, but they've surprised us before.

It would probably be wise to wait until the new Nvidia parts come out and see what happens. However, I don't think you're going to be seeing any price drops within the next few months. The thing about the Nvidia cards is that they're not going to be releasing anything but high-end parts, so I don't think the 150 dollar cards are going to see much change.

I agree. The price drops will be in the higher end cards. Either way, the Nvidias are supposed to be out April 6th. I read the embargo on them is up on the 26th or 27th. I've been waiting to build a new PC until the new Nvidias are released. I have a feeling they'll sell out right away and I won't be able to get one for a month or two anyway.

In about that price range, I just got a GF GTS250 for 130 EUR based on Tom's Hardware's recommendation, and I've been happy with it.
Isn't there always a newfangled thing just around the corner? This is why I stopped following hardware news and just bought the best recommended thing I could afford and get right away, less grief that way. (Also, never ever follow hardware prices when you've already bought something. You'll just feel bad!)

Well, the new Nvidia cards are their first DirectX 11 cards. ATI currently has a bunch out now. I wouldn't worry about DX11 unless you're building a high end machine. However, if you're going to have the card for a while and you can get a DX11 card at a decent price, why not.
I have a GTX260 right now. It runs every game I throw at it on the highest settings (most recently Dragon Age and Bad Company 2).
