3 Games: A Hypothetical Question.

This is one of those Hypothetical what if questions.

I was thinking to myself what if I could only play three games for the rest of my life, which three would I choose. After contemplating this for a while my final list was:

Dwarf Fortress
Europa Universalis 3
Mount and Blade

Which got me thinking. I do enjoy linear pre packaged experiences but I tend to prefer a sandbox. I'd be interested to see what games you guys come up with. My colse runners up were X-Com, and something by Bethesda.

Maybe Puyo Pop Fever or Super Puzzle Fighter 2 Turbo

Those are thinking I can't play with others, or that after a while, no one would be around playing TF2.

Hmmm, my games would have to be:

Creative intoxication.
Endurance tropical beach habitation.
Hide-the-pickle: bikini-team edition.

Yeah I'm kinda going with the desert island type of scenario.

Dwarf Fortress was barely edged out by nut bowling.

I'm surprised we've gone four posts without someone mentioning TF2 or WoW.

I wonder what Gaald's other two will be, since SOASE is obviously number one.

I would never make it with only singleplayer games. So I would have to say:

Starcraft (or Starcraft 2 though its not out yet) to scratch that RTS itch. It's an amazingly deep game that has been constantly evolving since it's release. Plus with all the map mods out there, the game is worth several games on it's own.

Rainbow Six: Raven Shield to scrath the FPS itch. That is ofcourse assuming I could always find games online. Plus the game double as a pure tactical planner (Yeah, I'll trade mark that later). My favorite thing to do in that game was to plan out a tactical path for the AI and then see how far into the level they could make it without any more input on my part other than hitting the Alpha, Brave, Charlie, etc... commands.

The next one is tough. I know I would want an MMO. The probelm is which one. I definitely want an MMO because it allows me to play with people while at the same time giving me the option to play solo and more slowly. I would be thinking either WoW or EQ2 for the which MMO. I really just want an MMO with solid combat mechanics as well as giving me the ability to just go out and explore.

While I enjoy singleplayer games, I can never play them for too long before getting bored and wanting to be "online" with other players.

This is a tough question. There's probably any number of answers for me, but for right now I'm going to go with:

Mount and Blade (Hitting people with swords never gets old.)
EU3 (I'll most likely die from old age before I feel I know how to play this game.)
and Chrono Trigger.

I play Chrono Trigger all the way through about once a year. Not even being on a desert island is going to stop me from doing that.

Pokemon Gold or Silver (DS version)

Chrono Trigger doesn't need any explanation, nor does WoW, I think.

Pokemon Gold/Silver was the best iteration of the franchise to date. It's the most complete world that Nintendo has created so far for the franchise, with a real-time clock that effects basically everything in the game. The DS version is everything I remember by 14 year old self loving when it came out 11 years ago and more. It's just too bad I don't have the time to waste now. Stupid job.

1. A Roguelike (Nethack, Angband, etc)
2. A 4X or Sid Meier-style or other similar strategy game (Civ, Pirates, Mount & Blade, Sins, MOO, X-Com, etc)
3. A hardcore flight combat sim (Falcon 4.0, IL-2, etc)

There's a lot of games I love already mentioned above - the Zeldas, Chrono Trigger, etc - but after about playthrough #10 or so, you'll know every nook and cranny and the game's challenge will be long, long gone. I'd love to say something like Fallout, but I will have exhausted everything that game has to offer many times over before I ascend once in Nethack. A lifetime's a long time.

I have a legitimate question here - what's the rationale behind picking a linear, story driven game like Mass Effect 2, Uncharted 2, or Zelda? Don't get me wrong - these are phenomenal games. But when you're talking about the rest of your life, doesn't replay value become the number one consideration, miles above everything else? Could you really picture yourself playing Uncharted 2 every month for the rest of your life? I'm not trying to criticize, I'm honestly curious as to the motivation behind this kind of choice over a more open-ended or replayable game.

Well, since it's a hypothetical question I would hypothetically assume that with any 3 video games I would get bored and do something else like talk to a volleyball. In which case it would be fun to revisit a dialogue heavy, story driven game every once in a while.

That's pretty much why I chose ME2. As much as I'd like to have a game that can be played over and over with different outcomes, I know there'd be a time when I wanted to play something with a great story. ME2 captures enough of those two things to warrant a nod in my book.

This is far more difficult than I initially thought, especially with no multiplayer... I'd be tempted to pick iterations of games I like that I haven't yet played, so:

Civ V
X3: Terran Conflict
STALKER: Call of Pripyat

I know I'll like all of those and they all have an essentially infinite replay value, but they're all new to me as well. So I'd have a long time in which I'd still be learning them which would drag them out some more. Would we be allowed authoring/modding tools and SDKs? With those I'd be even more content.
