Dragon Age RPG

Anyone gonna check this out? Certis, Brennil, Gaald and I are on a 4e break for the next while, but we're always open for a new RPG experience. I don't know much about the Dragon Age RPG, but I've heard that Green Ronin is known for making quality RPGs.

Unfortunately it doesn't look like any of our local gaming stores have this in stock.

Haven't tried it, but Greg Bilsland from WotC dig an interesting write-up on what takeaways he'd like to see in pen & paper after playing Dragon Age. I, for one, would like to see an tactical boardgame-like RPG that's 1v1 or 2v1.

This is a great idea. After all, it can only be better than the videogame.

If you guys are looking for an RPG with more meat than 4E, I'd suggest HackMaster from Kenzer and Company (www.kenzerco.com) the basic version of HackMaster 5th Edition is only $20 and can take players from level 1 to 5. It does a much better job at 4E at letting the players do more than just go from combat encounter to combat encounter.

I believe you can type "Dragon Age RPG" into the Amazon toolbar to the side, and order the book that way. I was tempted, but I'm on "spending probation" until we finish up house renovations. If you guys end up playing, I'd love to hear a review.

And Kenzer & Company is awesome. I got my Knights of the Dinner Table subscription renewed this year after a few years away. It's great to see those characters again.

Dragon Age feels so much like a D&D system already that I'm not sure what I'd get out of it, besides maybe the campaign setting.

Helllll no I'm not gonna check that out.

Dragon Age has, continues to, and will no doubt consume too much of my life going forward. Without bringing other people into it.

My thoughts exactly. I played a rogue and spent all my time flanking just like I always did in D&D 3e. So I put the difficulty on Easy since I already knew how the combat worked before the game started and didn't need to rehash that to advance the story.

What's Green Ronin doing with the mechanics that couldn't be done already with the d20 system?

And even that is of debatable value. Is the Dragon Age setting really all that compelling? It's very generic.

I doubt you can find another game that outdoes it in blood splatters...

Still, I don't know if I'd call it generic. Most everything is, to some extent. DA did some cool stuff with dwarfen politics, grey wardens and the appearance of heavy armours.

So it takes the D&D "bloodied" mechanic to a new level. I wonder if it uses chits or splashes of water-soluble paint. You take 18 points of damage and squirt 5cc of blood on your figure!

All fantasy settings are pretty generic by this point. People don't want new and very different settings because we like the familiar.

Just about any setting is generic. What's important is what you do with it.

It's what separates Medal of Honor from Call of Duty, for example.

I think the part of fantasy that DA borrows are things that are so ingrained in fantasy that they're part of the genre, as opposed to generic.

But how would you roleplay dialogue...? *

* Since, y'know, all the player-characters are silent protagonists in the video-game...you know what? Nevermind...Sigh.
